Boats stop waaay too slow

Recommended Posts

We have a speedboat in my family. When we're out and going around 100 km/h, we can easily stop the boat to 0 km/h with not more than 20 meters stopping distance. In game, the speedboat seems to take more than 100 meters to stop from full speed.

It's the water that does it all. A boat can't go through water without constant force. So if the engine stops, the water slows the boat down very quickly.

I would very much like this to be adjusted, since it really annoys me to see how hard it is to stop a speedboat in this game. I don't know how the much more weight that a military speedboat has because of guns and ammo, and how that would affect the stopping distance. But I don't believe that the current stopping distance is even close to correct.

What do you think of the stopping distance?

Admittedly I've only bee on a boat once (ingame) but it did seem to take forever to slow it down after we had gone full speed for a few minutes.

They also don't go in reverse and, since the Beta, no longer have functional lights. :(

The large gunboats are Jetboats, don't suppose your families speedboad is.

They take forever to stop and reverse poorly, they should however turn on a penny.

And stopping from 100kmh in 20 metres (60ft), dont think so. Most supercars even struggle to do it in under 100ft.

most of the physics in this game are pretty unrealisitic.

Boat need reverse gear to control the "braking". Everything else is inertia and is based on a set of physical factors.

Jetboats don't necessarily require a long distance to stop as they could have a crashstop feature.

"The CB90 is an exceptionally fast and agile boat[citation needed]. Its light weight, shallow draught, and twin water jets allow it to operate at speeds of up to 40 knots (74 km/h) in shallow coastal waters. The water jets are partially ducted, which, along with underwater control surfaces similar to a submarine's diving planes, allows the CB90 to execute extremely sharp turns at high speed, decelerate from top speed to a full stop in 2.5 boat lengths, and adjust its pitch and roll angle while under way"

Didnt see any control surfaces under the boats in A3. So they still wont stop like the CB90 mentioned above.

When I saw this thread I just had to register so I could post replies :)

I'm a marine engineer and have lived my whole life around boats and ships. Everything from the smallest canoe to the largest oil tankers in the world.

I have also been in the navy and experienced the CB90 and other similiar boats.

This is why I had to post:

Becouse that is utterly bullshit. No boat can do that, not even with a crashstop feature like the CB90. This is a very common misconception though becouse it's very hard to judge distance and speed out on the water. I doo however agree that the boats in Arma3 feels a bit wierd but hey, it's not a boat simulator.

Those are the water intakes for the jets.

Interesting boat the CB90,

but it is an assault boat with capability for landing personal, so somewhat a different purpose boat to the A3 boat and it dose stop quickly for a water jet drive!

however it does that well because it has a step in the chines so it will drop off the plane quickly once beneath a specific speed and it has two trim-tabs at the back of the hull beneath the water jet drives right on the trailing edge of the “V†hull, which its self is not special, however beside doing trimming like many boats they can be pushed down so they are ~ 70deg to the water surface so act like 2 big brakes that are near enough the full width of the boat which are BOTH the unusual parts (size/width and angle capability).

However it still looks like they are not fool-proof!

Dunno if you guys know how it's supposed to look, but you will after watching this:

This was very educational. I feel like I learned a lot about boats from this.

Just tried out the assault boat and I think it feel as it should except it takes to long to stop when going straight ahead. The solution right now is to make a 360 degrees turn, wich will quickly stop the boat.

Also, looking at the 3D model, I see that it does have reverse thrust capability and it should be able to crash stop.

Edit: Here is another video. This is the "G-boat" wich is another boat I had a lot of fun with during my time in the Royal Swedish Navy. There is a crash stop just after 2 minutes:

It can actually stop faster than that, but then everyone gets wet becouse of all the water plash ;)

I agree that boats should stop a bit faster but what bothers me more is not being able to turn properly at low speeds.

With full rudder/thruster deflection 'A' or 'D' and a quick burst of power 'E' the boat should turn quite fast with only a bit of forward speed.

100 km/h is roughly 28 meters per second, so stopping within 20 meters would be quite disastrous for anyone on board...

I must admit that we haven't been out in that boat for some time, and the distance was according to my memory.

I don't know if you watched the last vid I posted, but I reckon the crash stop there is 20 - 30m and that boat is not anywhere close to 100km/h there. More like 40 - 50km/h.

The lack of turn authority is due to no power at very low speeds. If its possible give these boats quick acceleration(they do accelerate quickly)as that would fix the slow turning.
