What mission is good to learn the game?

Recommended Posts

Hello, I just downloaded the free demo to try out the game. But I was wondering what is a good mission to learn the game with? I would like a mission with repawn because the ones without it are very short for me :butbut:

I'm already happy when I can get a kill/death ratio above 1. What brings me to my second question, where can I see statistics about the current game like the number of kills?

Respawn is not the right spirit to dive into ArmAverse....its about surviving...stop consider your player char a superhero...its about survival in a battlefield...go slow and stick to the team...don't rush. better get used to it because even in MP whre respawn is possible respan often just means you have to make a trip of 4km to the OA again. ArmA is and always was about not getting killed. Running around guns blazing is not the point here in a game whwere a single shot can end your virtual life. The first sigle player mission "trial by fire" is a good example what to exspect..If you can survive that short mission you are good to go on.

First you should clarify (to yourself) in which way you want to play ArmA. Beagle got the point: ArmA is literally about saving your virtual ass in intense shootouts.

The best way to learn the game is to watch some youtube videos about it. So you can have a look how other players survive. And how careless ppl don't survive.

Actually the most unrealistic way to play ArmA is to play vanilla imho. Give it a try. Play the tutorials and campaigns. The first missions are pretty easy and you can run through them almost blindfolded and hit some AI.

There are several mission which have respawn. Pick one. Also, Arma can be played anyway you like. Whether it's ultra realism or more of a "fun" map. It just depends on what server you're on, what map you're playing, or if you have the ability to edit and make your own scenarios. Arma can be played anyway you like...

try evolution - it's a sandbox to play with all of the weapons and vehicles at your own pace

In order to be a good player. One does not need to care about kill/death ratio... no offense, it sickens me when people speak about this too much. That's for run and gun FPS where you rambo and kill. I rather have barely any kills and 0 death because that's the way to go (I tend to play no respawn anyways). This game about being tactical. Well, you can always press I ingame to see your kills and death (if the server permits this) but on expert you can't check your "KDR".

As for mission, I'll recommend you Takistan force if you want to learn some stuff. Just experiment around with it a bit, its quite nice and have respawn for you and dynamic missions that aren't just capture this base domination style. http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?103813-COOP-20-Takistan-Force-(OA)

First to Fight and Eye for an Eye are the missions I cut my teeth on in this game.

Try an Insurgency server. You learn really fast to keep your head down and work with your team :)

If you want something solo, consider trying out First To Fight like Maturin said..

Flashpoint is also pretty fun. Chaotic, fun.

My surviability has improve somewhat already, one of the most important things to survive seems to be the binocular, spotting the enemy early and engaging high from far away seems to be key to stay alive. Running around without first checking whatever it is save is a fast way to die.

Thanks all for your advise, I tried many of those missions but most of them don't seem to work because I have only the free version. He seems to try to open some CO files and then gives an error.

But operation flashpoint does work :) I have also discoverd that you can make the standard missions(the one under my mission like defense) more interesting by giving the enemy or yourself differrent units or vehicles.

Instead of the ffee version, once you buy the game ( get Combined Operations) there is an area called the Armoury.

You are given lots of mini-missions, attack, defend and many others. It gives you the chance to try out every weapon, vehicle and aircraft in the game. Its great!

There is something strange with evolution: I can join evolution servers but I can't create them(it then says I lack DCL). On those evolutiuon servers do chopters often kill me, what is a good infantry weapon to shoot down chopters?

Try a Stinger Rocketlauncher, or if you're on the OPFOR side, Strela & Igla Launchers, is the most reliable way.

Also, for (low) flying aircraft (but i don't know if thats in avaliable ArmA 2 Free, since its PMC content), i had quite a good succes rate in getting (transport rather than attack ones) choppers down with the AA-12 Shotgun with HE Rounds. You can also use any high-calibre weapons sch as the M60, M240, or even the ScarH variantes to force a helicopter down if you unleash hell into the cockpit region. Taking out the pilot is a good way. This usually works fine for Low-flying Transport helis with door gunners, or transports which are about to land somewhere, since choppers at high altitude and speed are out of your effective range.

Also, in Multiplayer, Pilots often make the mistake to auto hover and turn sideways so their gunners can open fire on the battlefield. If they do, and i have a sniper rifle, it's back hawk down usually.

Thanks, that does indeed solve the trouble I had with helicopters. I noticed that I have more chance to hit with a stinger when an helicopter or jet is moving away from me rather then towards me. So I now first seek cover until the helicopter or jet passes me, then do I use my stinger.

BTW, I found a version of evolution that I can not only join but also host on my comp with the free version, it is called: [AWG] Evolution v32z - Chernarus

You are entirely right. In real life, it is like that a rocket has a limited 'cone' which can be 30°, 45°, up to 90° radius around the tip of the rocket (center pointed forward) in which it can track and follow it's target. Once the target slips out of this range, it will not be able to re-gain acces to the target and take it out. (At least for weapons with an IR Seeker, radar-guided weaponry is whole lot different, i belive)

If a plane moves up to you, and deploys flares, your rocket tends to pass underneath the plane, and loses its target, resulting in the missile to go lost. If the Aircraft is moving away from you, the relative speed difference between rocket / plane is lower, resulting in the rocket to have more time to accelerate and track down the target.

I don't know how exactly this is implemented into ArmA, but apparently, to some degree it is, otherwise the above behaviour would not be noticeable.

Have fun shooting them down, and i hope you keep enjoying to play ArmA 2.

Go to Armaholic.com (a superlative resource) and you'll find in the relevant download section very many missions and campaigns specifically for Arma II rather than CO. Each full listing will tell you which do or do not need addons (which AFAIK are not available in A2 free). For example, Bardosy's campaigns for A2 are addon-free and superb - "Chesty Puller" is IMHO as good as anything - official or user - for A2.

But you will miss out a lot if you don't upgrade to full CO. It really is worth the money, if you like A2 free you will love CO.

You are right, I tried the game more and I absolutely love it. This is really the kind of game you must get used to and learn, but when you do does it really shine. The thing that really convinced me to buy it was warfare benny lite, which is a very fun and deep mission I love to play. I am now downloading the steam combine operations version I bought from bistore, once I have it shall I have access to more of those warfare maps and other cool scenario's. Editing is also not hard in this game, I already added a feature I wanted to warfare benny and made a simple mission(http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=18226).

I shall later also try out the campaign you suggested :)

The best mission to learn is Hike on the hills, you can find it in-game in SinglePlayer->Scenarios . A simple and fast but entertaining village sweep.

The official campaigns are note very good. Operation Arrowhead is OK to learn and prove weapons and vehicles, and have good missions, so I recomend it.

I agree about Bardosy's campaigns, they are awesome and focused in big scale battles. Chesty Puller is great, but in my opinion Operation Mighty justice is the best.

here you have the link, it's for Operation Arrowhead:

If you like Spec Ops, try Operation Detachment Delta, and Seal team six DEVGRU by Sick1. They use many addons like ACE and custom units, and cool user maps like Isla Duala.

Or my favourite campaign: Chasing Grim Reaper by Saok:

http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=14299

There are many more of VERY high quality. It's amazing what community can do with the game.

have fun.
