Server geo location in 96016 beta

Recommended Posts

We have implemented a server geo location in this release, so that we can improve the server browser experience in the future. The coordinates should be save in the server ArmA2OA.cfg file in serverLongitude / serverLatitude values (read only, no need to attempt to change them).

I would like to ask server admins to check if those fields are correct for them. If they are wrong by a small bit (say off by 1 or 2), it should not matter, but if the value is way off (like locating your server in Australia while it is actually in US), please, report the issue here.

I hate to split hairs, boss, but I presume you are talking about beta 96015, not 96016?

Dedicated server exe actually has a revision number 96016. I am interested in reports from dedicated servers. If you are hosting a dedicated server using normal game exe then yes, I am interested in 96015 version as well.

To keep this thread short and workable, please do not post when your server is reporting OK. Post only when it is not OK, as this is what needs to be worked on, and it would be impossible to find in the OK, OK, OK list.

despite these changes and features, i will be able to see full server list in the future again if filters set to show all?

No, you will never ever again see the full server list again. There are too many servers and having full list was causing too much load on the matchmaking server. We need to improve or redesign the server browser to be usable even without the complete server list.

This means nothing yet. Once server longitude / latitude info is populated and confirmed to be working correctly, we will start filtering out distant servers by default, so that you can always see the servers close to you.

Thanks for the insights!

Hopefully there will be an option to disable it/not be active when using filters,

as for specific game modes people tend to play on server even far away as there are no alternatives.

I have no servers near me (Brasil...), always play in european and north american servers, should I be worried?

It will be smart enough to provide you enough "closest" server, no matter what closest means with your current filter. If there are no servers close, you should see those far away. Only when there are many servers close meeting the filter rules, you should see them first.

While I completely understand the reasons for this and it's very reasonable as a default, wouldn't simple throttled pagination solve it while maintaining the option to not filter out any servers?

i cant understand for dayz its not as great of an issue since every server is the same addon and your char is saved all around those servers. Though its annoying if you cant join a friend cause you cant see the server.

alot more annoying is the non dayz server list , which was around 50 populated servers for me. Right now 2-3 servers that i know are online and that i used to play regulary on barely show anymore. showing a couple of servers with 3-5 ppl on it with ACE running i never play isnt very helpful to me if they got a ping of 30 instead of the eastern european server with 50 people running domination that i play alot but has a ping of 80 so it quit showing to me...

This browser issue got to be top priority to get a solution for, i might as well close my 2 servers as only a handfull of players have joined the last couple of DayZ <-- grrrrr.

People complaining they cant find the servers thinking they closed down, i can refresh around 8 times before they show up if im lucky.

Mine seems way off - Server located copenhagen dk.

serverLongitude=426870848;

serverLatitude=426389952;

Another join on the server gives:

serverLongitude=0;

serverLatitude=0;

3rd time joining my server:

serverLongitude=0;

serverLatitude=1062327726;

All 3 joins are within 30mins.

Just to understand right - theese are created in the client ArmA2OA.cfg based on which server you connect to - right?

I tried for find these on my servers ArmA2OA.cfg but not there.

I don't think the client side is working fully yet. The location data is in the server cfg.

Where it says my server is: serverLongitude=10 serverLatitude=62 (Norway)

Where it actually is: serverLongitude=-120 serverLatitude=37 (West Coast, USA)

This seems to fall slightly outside the margin of error.

Thanks for letting me know. Can you post your server IP here, or, if you do not want to publish it, sent it to me via PM?

I've added a map of the locations the servers are reporting at: http://arma2.swec.se/server/country

Most of the locations make sense. The rounding of the coordinates is a bit high in my opinion but i guess it doesn't matter for the server browser.
