F-35B Tips

Recommended Posts

I've just started flying the F-35B and have fallen in love with it, but I still have a long way to go before I am any good with it. I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to use it? Is there a trick to using sidewinders? because every time I fire them the enemy just pops flares and they miss, the only things I've ever killed with them are UAZ's. What are the flaps for? etc

Flaps (on every plane, not only F-35) increase lift so they help to lift off on short runways, also they help at landings as you can come in slower than without.

On the other side they generate air drag, slowing down your plane, so in flight, raise them up.

Sidewinders. Try to get behind your opponent and fire them on short distance preferably. You might also try to create a face-to-face situation and fire shortly before you pass your opponent. Avoid the missile having to do turns to reach the target and keep distance to target as low as possible.

And always watch your back, he might not be alone, binding your awareness, not realizing there is another plane taking position behind you. ;)

Thanks, just followed your advice and got a kill with the sidewinders straight away

The F35 is equipped with GBU (laser guided bombs). To hit anything you will either need to practice freefall OR get someone to laser designate a target for you :) Best fun to be had WITH your clothes on :)

If I place a laser target in editor can I use that for the GBU?

Isn't it possible to TAB-lock targets with the LGB bomb? I recall doing this once in the game, it could've changed when OA/CO came out.

Here's a tip for flying. Fly very, very fast, because in A2, fixed-wing aircraft have a very limited service ceiling and have a tendency to stall very easily.

Unfortunately, jet aircraft in A2 are very slow compared to their real-life counterparts.

You can't really stall with the F35, it just goes into autohover mode. I was trying it before while dogfighting and it just hovers in the air, it's really useful.

Does anyone know how to aim the GBU's without a laser to lock onto? they aren't TAB-locking for me but that just might be a mod I'm using

For GBU in F35:

The best you can do is getting close from target 500 m,try to have target at the bottom of that circle in the HUD ... it will hit it or near it ,you can adjust after that.

Try to keep 0° horizontal angle .

If you play only SP,use mando missile mod.

@Angus S

GBU = Guided Bomb Unit. It has a laser tracker, therefor it needs a laser target which is usually given by a ground unit with laser designator. Also the UH-1Y has a laser designator which can do the task.

You really should try to play in a team, it really can be fun at times.

Sometimes it's difficult to have someone on the server caring to lase your targets, so you do it yourself :D

Here's a small video i made to show you how it works:

Yeah but I mostly play single player and the AI doesn't really lase targets for me. I wish there was an F35 with JDAM instead of GBU, those are super accurate and don't need a laser

@Qazdar just saw your video, nice work with the bombs, two direct hits

Holy crap thats impressive bombing.

Wish we had realistic bombing displays in ARMA2 though

Need to have a HUD with calculated impact points for bombs

@angus

If you play SP only,try mando missile mod it's really great once you learn commands.

I tried mando's missiles but the MFD thing you use with the GBU's runs way to laggy for me so I can't manage to hit anything, one day when I have a btter PC (hopefully) I will look back into it

I find the simplest way to drop bombs without a lock is to dive bomb... Go down at about 20degrees waitfor your target to line up roughly with the circle and drop 'em... Pull up drop flairs and circle round and try to bomb from a new direction....

And get shot by RPG :D or by your bomb itself.

It's probably the easiest way to do it but it's very risky especially if your opponentsare experienced !

Just know that the farther you are the the more you should have main crosshair above target,like with normal guns.

I find that if the enemy doesn't have any AA it's quite easy to just go into autohover until you are stationary and then fly really low and just use your 25mm against enemies, it really cuts down on amm usage

When playing SP you can use "t" to switch from a soldier with laser designator to the plane. Mark the target from the ground, switch to plane and drop the bomb from high altitude and enjoy the impact from the ground perspective...

great fun. (i wish we could have deployable laser designators we could disembark after we marked the target)

How do you lase the targets yourself - not sure that is included in the video?

If you need an AI to laser designate for you I use this script. Unfortunately

AI have to be 550m or less to actually target anything. There is a high risk of them being targeted and killed at this distance so add:

_jtac allowdamage false; to make him invulnerable.

private ["_jtac"];
_jtac = Alpha createUnit ["BAF_Soldier_FAC_MTP", position player, [], 10, "None"];
_jtac removeWeapon "BAF_L85A2_UGL_Holo";
[_jtac] join Alpha;
_jtac doMove position player;
_jtac selectWeapon "Laserdesignator";

if ((alive _jtac) and (alive _F35Bveh)) do
{
_nearestenemy = _jtac findNearestEnemy getPos _jtac;
_jtac doTarget _nearestenemy;
_jtac doFire _nearestenemy;
sleep 10;
};

Alpha is the players group, adding him to your group means he will follow you so you can lead him to the enemy. Alpha = Group this; in player init.

alive _F35Bveh is the name of the F35 that is spawned for CAS.

That script is to spawn a JTAC/FAC for your group but the most important lines are;

_jtac removeWeapon "BAF_L85A2_UGL_Holo";
_jtac selectWeapon "Laserdesignator";

if (alive _jtac) do
{
_nearestenemy = _jtac findNearestEnemy getPos _jtac;
_jtac doTarget _nearestenemy;
_jtac doFire _nearestenemy;
sleep 10;
};

That gets him to target the enemy with the laser, as you can see he is very reluctant to do it 'as is' lol.

Thanks CAS & PELHAM, I will definitely give both of those ideas a go

¬_¬

Obviously you dont do it so that you fly into your blast...

I managed to do that once. I was really surprised :rolleyes:

The more you're far from target,the more that impact point is somewhere under the circle on the HUD ... now imagine how much you should be close to have impact point inside the circle :D

Never had that problem from divebombing myself high or low alt dive... as I said you pull up after dropping...Obv you dont drop the bomb when you're 5 foot of the ground... Common sense does come in usefull to not shoot yourself down.. I mean its not the most accurate technique but if you need to take out a tank or a column of softskins it works fine... The momentum from the dive keeps the bombs on tgt I find...

Hi, the AIs seem to don't swith Off the LD when moving from place to place to have a better field of view of the targets, so you can end bombing your own AIs, this also happens from time to time when the AIs observate the surrounds without change the observing possition; but in my experience... have an AI on the ground designating objectives with a LD works 2 of each 3 times. Let's C ya

*EDIT:

The AI sometimes don't switchs off neither the LD when they put it on their back to grab the rifle again.
