Devs, how about... weekly updates! (Community poll inside)

Recommended Posts

Maybe the best choice would be to ask for a new Arma 3 exclusive Dev Blog.

It should not focus on the game itself(therefore not revealing too much of the game yet), but rather on the process of its developpement.

I think many of us would love to see some of the footage the 10 BIS members took at Limnoss or just some random or funny stuff that happened in the office.

Remember the TOH fastrope picture? Something like this is a good idea! ;)

+1 to that. ^^

I think we would all love some behind the scenes dev-porn to masturbate over. :)

Wolfire do a good job at weekly videos/blogs. Just a quick heads up, what they are doing. They even get suggestions and may be change a few bits and bats before the final product.

then again it is a game about giant fighting rabbits :p

Anyway the community bitching and moaning from the initial media releases with plenty of polls etc suggesting that BIS may not know what they are doing is probably not the greatest incentive for said developers to share anything with ya bunch of whingers :p

I would love to see the BIS devs fight each other in ArmA 3 :D

Dev-porn  . Oh no the images !! NOOOO !!!!

But yeah :D , not actual ingame videos or screens but some innocent concept drawings or small design ideas . Or maybe BIS will release those in a DELUX DIGITAL EDITION that will cost 30 $ more then the normal edition  .

I'd like the possibility of weekly updates.....

I remember when Wayward Software were developing B-17 The Mighty Eighth, went well for a while, then it all went very, very bad. One of the devs said later that he felt he was being treated on a level similar to a pedophile, such was the level of abuse and anger over game design decisions.

And that was a sim crowd. A realism crowd. Don't tell me it couldn't happen here :)

If I were to ever develop a game, I wouldn't have a system of open dialogue with the public. That probably makes me sound bad, but that's not the same as not listenng to the public.

I once read a blog post by an indie game developer explaining why he doesn't read his own forums at all, and he made a pretty reasoned argument. Basically it's down to three problems:

1. A thousand different people make a thousand different suggestions, so you can never use them all, even if you wanted to. If you do decide to go with one or two, the others will think that their "awesome and obviously superior" suggestions were intentionally left out or overlooked. -> Angry people.

2. You can't please everyone. As soon as you make a design decision, there is guaranteed to be a group of people who hate it, and hate you even more for even considering it. -> Angry people.

3. A significant percentage of people on the internet are assholes, so they'll troll your forums/blog/etc. just for the fun of it. -> Angry people.

The guy in question basically had a friend of his act as community manager, keeping the forums in check and relaying the occasional good suggestion to him.

All in all I'd say we're pretty lucky the devs hang around here so much.

Well, dev updates are constantly posted on Take On's Facebook and Twitter pages, and occasionally on the website too. ;)

Oh, c'mon, Zip'! Who really cares about helicopters?! :p

Which reminds me, I still need to update this page with our latest behind the scenes snaps.

:threadjacked:

Best,

RiE

note: we all care very much about helicopters.

Also, this:

Basically it's down to three problems

For sure. IMO, the devs should just batton down the hatches & get on with it :) it's like making a film: run a film in front of a test audience to see how they think it should end... = rubbish film. The film should be the director's vision, not a public consensus.

I mean I like to scribble my opinions & ideas down as much as anybody, and if any of them stick or inspire another idea, great. My ego is boosted :)

While doing that sounds neat I'm not convinced it would be the best choice considering how similar we are to piranha's considering we tore apart every bit of the E3 press release..plus weekly may be a bit too much, monthly would likely be the better option since there would be far more to show in between the periods.

I would be happy about some Behind the scenes Footage from the developing process. No actuall In game Stuff. I just want to see how it is to develop a game.

weekly updates are clearly too much! ;)

I mean what would you want to show? And who would be the poor guy writing all these weekly updates? :P

Simply transferring the concept from Take on Helis with updated behind the scenes pictures and a small story behind them to Arma 3 and then combine it with the Dev blog idea seems like the ideal option.

I agree on some kind of Fortnightly update.

Just to give some ideas of what the dev team is getting up too, what avenues are being investigated, what new breakthroughs have been accomplished etc. I think that'll be quite good for the community, get some kind of up-to-date information regarding a game we're all going to buy and love.

True it would be neat to see the game evolve like what we saw with Arma1, though there was quite a bit of backlash and at this point of publicity given how things get around on the internet WIP might actually harm BI especially since many people can't seem to comprehend the concept of work in progress.

Rather than weekly updates, I'd rather see BIS troll the community every week. Sort of like post BS updates about stupid things like Sci-Fi lasers & nanosuits in ArmA 3, only to say next week that they were just kidding and working on something else that's bogus.

At least then we can laugh at the people who complain about that crap instead of FPDRing.

Ummm I cant wait and that's the problem...to have BIS rub it in every week would kill me I would like to forget about ARMA3 till near the time but that wont be possible so maybe a compromise say every month :)

I think monthly updates would suffice... Weekly is just too fast... Not that I wouldn't want it, its just I think 1 big monthly update is better then 1 small update a week...

A tidbit about Arma3's assets once in a while would be cool. There is a long way to go yet before any sort of commercial release to the public, i would of thought more intel on the game will be incoming early 2012?.

and it all comes down to an dev blog ;)

i mean weekly updates, now thats really too much! (for very obvious reasons)

you have the dev blog as an already existing platform for game and/or company updates, therefore being the best solution to reveal some information about Arma 3.

the next thing you shouldnt ask for is exclusive in-game content or details on the story etc ( for also very obvious reasons)

As said by many of us here, we would really appreciate some of the footage you collected during the Limnos trip or some behind the scenes content of the process of developemment of maybe the new animations system? ;)

Basically the same you did with Take on Helicopters

The decision is completely up to BIS!

This is just an idea, if used will make me (and propably some more people) very happy.

It is unmitigated in your hand

I think a Dev blog would be perfect. I would enjoy reading about the processes/challenges behind the development of the new(er) engine, PhysX implementation, equipment, and/or research done for Arma 3.

Either way, I would love to know more than we know now; Even if for the sake of having more to discuss.

weekly is way too much, monthly or even bi-monthly is much more reasonable.

A Dev blog or something of the sort would indeed be cool, with regular updates.

At any rate, I´m really just fishing for -any- new content, because I can´t wait to see more.

Same goes for the other games.

You know it's not that hard to post on forums?

Hell, the two lead game designers at Paradox Interactive (Which isn't a small company, anymore) has 24,000+ posts all together. Of course they've been on the forum since the beginning (1999), that's still huge.
