Marc15yo 0 Posted October 12, 2010 Hey guys. First off i hope this doesn't sound like spam or ads because my biggest fear is to get banned from the bi forums. So mods, if you think this goes against the off topic rules please just close my thread or something. Okay basically my friend and I created this website called www.picdrop.net its the first ever (that we know of) drag and drop image hosting site The cool part is you don't even need to register to upload. You just come by drag and drop your pictures (addons, mods, idk) into the box and it uploads them. And it basically remembers who you are (via cookies) so next time you come in your images are there. Except your images will get lost (not deleted) if you delete your cookies. But this only applies if your a guest if you register (free) it stores the images in your album. Also it automatically makes the html url and forum codes when you click on the image Were still working on it so there are probably some bugs, no viruses or ads, no captcha because if you can upload an image through drag and drop your probably human lol. So yeah i thought i'd bring it up because a lot of the people in the community (including me) upload images to the internet daily this would just make it a hell of a lot easier on everyone. Basically as long as its not pornographic or obscene or w.e. you can upload it and its easy to remember too: www.picdrop.net http://www.picdrop.net/FAQ/how_to_upload.html there's alot of features that we'll add too so stay tuned. (things like image editing, resizing. more managing of images and albums...) I know resizing is a huge thing for the bi forums cuz of the 100kb limit. So this feature should be appearing soon. And if its not too much it would be great to get your feedback. This is our/my first site btw. oh and one more thing it only works with firefox and chrome at the moment. IE explorer is being stubborn. Oh and you need javascript enabled in your browser
Richey79 10 Posted October 12, 2010 Uploaded via PicDrop Was wondering if it can create forum-code and html. Guess that answers my question. Fast uploads, and a hell of a lot less corporate than most image hosting. So, yeah, I'll use it, since it works effectively using the KISS principle. Thanks for spreading the word, Marc. NeMeSiS 11 Posted October 12, 2010 Idea is pretty cool, shame it doesnt work on IE9 though. (Yeah, i like using it. No, i am not switching.)
AnimalMother92 10 Posted October 12, 2010 Sweet, sounds pretty good. A feature that auto-resized any pic to 100kb would be a godsend. :)
sparks50 0 Posted October 12, 2010 Nice service, but is there a thumbnail functionality? Uploaded via PicDrop
TomatoArden 0 Posted October 12, 2010 Uploaded via PicDrop This works just nicely, just drop it in there baby! You are allowed to put adverts on the page though Id suggest some kind of twitter account linking or something, thatd be useful for keeping track of uploads without having to register! celery 8 Posted October 12, 2010 How is the site funded? You'd think that using it as an upload/hotlink service it will get lots of traffic.
whisper 0 Posted October 12, 2010 Maybe the site could go with a better design (I find it a bit candy / child-like), but the idea is very neat.
mr burns 133 Posted October 12, 2010 (edited) Uploaded via PicDrop Works fine! +´s for usability. When my 2nd free-photobucket account is full i´ll consider switching to you guys :D A feature that auto-resized any pic to 100kb would be a godsend. :) Depends on the resizing mechanism, the ones i know from forums where too large image attachements get automatically resized tend to literally butcher any form of picture quality. max power 21 Posted October 12, 2010 Very interesting! One small crit about your logo. It looks too much like the viewer is seeing double. It's not hard to read but it's hard to 'read', if you know what I mean. It's difficult to figure out what's going on in the image and consequently, it's hard to look at. rundll.exe 12 Posted October 12, 2010 Uploaded via PicDrop Nice service I assume you use the HTML5 drag and drop features? Also explains why it doesnt work in IE. is there any way to delete the images btw?
GoOB 0 Posted October 12, 2010 Uploaded via PicDrop I love it! Great idea, and excellent execution. And for your first site? Ambitious is somewhat of an understatement. The only criticism I have is in regards to the visual design of the site - Perhaps a lighter blue would be suitable for the background, and as mentioned before the logo has a bit much going on at the same time. The incorporation of the drop in the logo is however really good, I just feel the site design would benefit from the same application of the KISS-principle that the means of uploading files do. Looking forward to using your site, and seeing it develop. Once again, great work!
Jelliz 10 Posted October 12, 2010 Good site. Facebook-liked.
jayeasy 10 Posted October 12, 2010 Sick, love how I don't have to register....do my images get automatically deleted?
STALKERGB 6 Posted October 13, 2010 USed this as a host for my pictures with my latest 3 Rifles Release. Works brilliantly!
Marc15yo 0 Posted October 13, 2010 (edited) Whoa guys thanks for the supportive comments :p How is the site funded? You'd think that using it as an upload/hotlink service it will get lots of traffic. Well so far nothing. We are applying for google adsense but really our own money has gone into it. We see it as an investment. If picdrop can get big we can have ads on our page but not the annoying kind with popups and those that play videos and stuff. Just like 1-3 ads really. Right now were just trying to get traffic and waiting for people to "switch over" lol Id suggest some kind of twitter account linking or something, thatd be useful for keeping track of uploads without having to register! Good idea, we had a site in the works called ratethispic.net (as you can see still in the works) we managed to integrate facebook login into the site so people dont have to register. Now that we know how we might just add it to picdrop Maybe the site could go with a better design (I find it a bit candy / child-like), but the idea is very neat. I love it! Taken note. We are working on making it look 'sexy' but so far its been hard. So right now were working first hand to make the site "simpler" as you guys have said. suggestions on how would be much appreciated Very interesting! One small crit about your logo. It looks too much like the viewer is seeing double. It's not hard to read but it's hard to 'read', if you know what I mean. It's difficult to figure out what's going on in the image and consequently, it's hard to look at. Thanks the logo was made by our friend kurt he's the genius behind it. We found it appealing at the moment but if you guys strongly believe it needs improvement will work on it, but for now its gonna be low priority. EDIT: About the 100kb image size, yeah were gonna see if we can get an image resize function available in the "my album" page for those who are logged in. Maybe similar to photobucket where you can decrease the image size via percentage or something. And yes about the delete function, the my album page is still very much in the works so yeah the delete button and option hasnt been added yet. It should be by tomorrow if not in a few days Edited October 13, 2010 by Marc15yo forgot to mention a few things
Guest Posted October 13, 2010 Added your site to the Armaholic FAQ "how to add pictures". Great work with this and I hope you will be succesfull :)
Maddmatt 1 Posted October 13, 2010 Nice. Thumbnail support and some basic image editing like re-size, crop, adjust compression ect would be good to have. http://www.picdrop.net/uploads/sox1.jpg

Richey79 10 Posted October 13, 2010 I assume you use the HTML5 drag and drop features? Also explains why it doesnt work in IE. I haven't followed the benefits of HTML5 too closely, but IE9 is supposed to support it - should be coming 'soon' (precise date unannounced). Picdrop doesn't work with IE9 beta, which is available now.

IE will never be on par with the standards, so Its best not to bother with it :D However there will always be ppl forced to use IE :( Ppl asking to make this work should direct their request to microsoft, not the webdevs
Richey79 10 Posted October 13, 2010 Ppl asking to make this work should direct their request to microsoft, not the webdevs I agree. If the whole application is based on code that MS don't fully support, then there's no point in spending that amount of effort or compromise on the problem. With IE9 they seem to have made a conscious effort to make it look more 'Firefoxy'. There's even more screen estate than with FF, but that takes away a certain amount of ease of control from the user, and feels a bit condescending, tbh. Worst thing about IE is that it still tries to force you to use Bing. I know these things are fairly easily customised, but it feels like MS' coersion from the old days still rearing its ugly head. It's not awful like it used to be, and the 64 bit version seems to run pretty smoothly, but it's still always playing catch-up. Can't remember the last time I had only one internet browser installed on a machine, anyway (apart from at work).

Stopped working after safari updated :(
JDog 11 Posted October 21, 2010 (edited) Great site. I may use it for some things. It's just hard to switch when you've developed a "collection" I guess of organized albums elsewhere already. I suppose being able to have multiple albums/sub-albums would be nice to put on it. And I hate having multiple services that do the same thing >.> But yea that aside, very good I'll use it here and there. Liked on FB.
