What special software/hardware do you use with Arma2?

Recommended Posts

Yesterday, before the weekly Charlie Foxtrot battle, I was busy setting everything up when I became aware of the plethora of programs I had to activate and configure in order to play Arma2 "properly".

In my case these are the following:

1. TeamSpeak3. For comms, obviously.

2. TINT. A program + TS3 plugin that overlays TS3 information in-game.

3. SirReal's Panel. A plugin for the Logitech G15 keyboard that, among other things, also interfaces with TrackIR and shows who is speaking. (Good for TS "whispers", because they don't show up on TINT.)

4. TrackIR. Those special pieces of hardware (IR cam + TrackClip Pro), and the accompanying software.

5. FRAPS. For the in-game FPS display and, of course, recording.

6. VAC. Voice activated command software. In MP I use it to quickly create markers on the map.

7. AutoHotkey. I use this software to run a small script I wrote, which adjusts my mic and headset volume when I hit my push-to-talk key.

What kind of special software or hardware do you use in combination with Arma2?

I use most of those mentioned apart from Tint, VAC and Autohotkey.

I also use RAMdisk+, Xpadder, Logitech setpoint, Evga Precision and Coretemp. I like to keep an eye on things, an overclockers habits die hard.

Hardware wise, nothing specific except the RAMdisk already in my current RAM, I am weighing up getting a 120/240gb PCIe SSD drive or increasing my RAM to an obscene amount to fit the whole game folder into it though.

I will give Tint a try now that I know of it's existence thanks.:)

Logitech SetPoint is another one I also use, mainly for mapping keys to the extra mouse buttons on my G5. (Otherwise, games don't detect them.)

For temp monitoring I use SpeedFan. Not because it's the best out there, but because it also interfaces with SirReal's Panel and allows me to monitor temps on the G15 display. :)

I use my brain, which usually goes into autopilot in most games I play... just ask the missus about some of my epic SC2 failures. :D

Does that do any good?

It temporally closes all unnecessary services in the backround. After disabling the gaming-mode all services will be restarted with one click. If you did not disable all these services manually it can give you round about ~200mb free ram.

In the past I often used it in combination with a ramdisk. If you only have 4GBs of ram these ~200mb of free ram are very important sometimes ;).

TrackIR, Cougar HOTAS, Belkin N52te, and Notepad++. All have their own interfaces and settings, I use Notepad++ to make on-the-fly changes to scripts ingame.

At the moment only TrackIR (not always), rivatuner (for FPS, temps and custom GPU settings only to be used during Arma play) and my joystick for flying.

I also shut down my VM on which I run all my normal website stuff etc. But not sure if shutting that down actually counts :)

I have two profiles - one with Kegetys SoftTH to drive the screens in my sig. (Hi CJ! ;)) plus homebuilt Freetrack - thats for regular play - the other profile is standard vanilla for editing... no other special hardware, though I've considered investing in a seperate numpad since my keyboard doesn't have one...

I use a bucket, why stop playing when you need to "go"

I also have two servants, one to move the mouse and another to operate the keyboard.

You should get the servants to go for you . . .
