    Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL/Daesh) Discussion

Sigh, it's been 35 years already and some well-meaning middle-class people still can't embrace the idea that the Middle East is different from West and you can't just remove the dictator without condemning the country into the decades of chaos and civil strife. But hey, it worked so well in the Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya, let's try it again folks! ^_^

Diplomatic incident between Russia and Turkey

Turkey is on the north and Syria is on the south. The bold light-blue line is the state border. The red dotted line is the flight path of a Russian bombers (I believe there were two of them) according to Turkish military. The two other lines (green and blue) represent Turkish F-16. Not sure about MM and HH labels though.

Diplomatic incident between Russia and Turkey

Putin just said that the incedent is "an obvious backstab" and called Turkey "terrorists' accomplice". He also noted that shoot down happened despite Russia-US treaty concerning the prevention of exactly these incedents.

    Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL/Daesh) Discussion

That doesn't change the fact the Turkey have extremely screwed up. Even if the shoot down was justified by the international law, it certainly wasn't justified by the basic common sense because the only winning party in all this is ISIL (and probably personally Putin, for a very small extent). By shooting that lone bomber that didn't try to advance further into Turkish territory and was on a mission in which international community claims to be interested, Turkey have put itself into a tough political situation, it have put NATO in even tougher position, it most likely prevented the creation of anti-ISIL coalition, it created a situation in which a war between Russia and NATO might actually happen because Russia has an actual semi-legit reason to retaliate, it will most likely lose all economic and political ties with Russia and Kurds will probably start to receive a substantial support on a regular basis from an unknown friend. Turkey not just basically screwed international interests and joined the war on the wrong side, it also turned NATO into literally ISIL's very own air defence forces. I bet it felt nice for al-Baghdadi to have the most powerful ADF in the world on his side, even if for a couple of minutes. And all this for what, exactly? For momentary feeling of national pride? Heh, a wise decision indeed. But yeah, they probably had a right to do so, just like anybody can try to kick neighbour's angry doberman from their lawn shoud he wonder there chasing a squrell... and their family might even get a hefty compensation from doberman's owner so it won't go bankrupt after lawn defender's lavish funeral.

Someone wrote a thesis on ARMA 3

Um... Oh, I'll better leave this thread before I get banned for derailing it into discussion of usefulness of certain Liberal Arts degrees. :D

Someone wrote a thesis on ARMA 3

Yeah but I believe that this principle is not really applicable in the academic world. From my standpoint, certain research either solves or helps to understand how to solve some problem or it's just a waste of paper, time and taxpayers / parents money. While there's noting wrong with researches who try to "solve" some inconsequental or made-up problem to feel important and relevant (as long it's their money they're wasting, their Uni becomes richer and can fund some actual research) that's understandable human desire but it's kinda confusing to see that quite often they're taken seriously by both general public and universities. Again, I can understand why universities pretend that those people's work is valuable - you never have too much money on the bank account and it's far easier to lecture Worldwide Garbage Can History than Higher Mathematics but when you see people seriously discussing women oppression in computer games or demand a "safe spaces" in the certain gaming community or shaming developer for underrepresentation of black people in a game set in 15th century Europe... well... maybe there is more harm than good in this peculiar attempt to keep universities financially afloat..

Uh-huh. And what will the scientific world gain from thorough analysis of some computer game, exactly? I understand the university though - these students are free to major even in Plastic Spoon History as long as they're paying for being able to pretend that their "work" actually worth something. Right, very funny indeed. <_<

    RHS Escalation (AFRF and USAF)

All-seeing AI on older maps is AllInArma's issue. I think that the CUP team is working on a replacement for it (CUP Terrains) that hopefully wouldn't have such problem.

Joining public servers = playing Arma wrong. :) Jokes aside, I've read in some of the Spotreps (Techreps? Somethingreps?) that BI aims to somehow improve server-joining experience in upcoming expansion but they didn't share much details.

Wow, this map looks very interesting! Too bad I can't try it until tomorrow. Congratulations on release! :)

How Long And How Much Work To Build Future New Engine?

There is an other side of the "Arma going mainstream" coin — it will fix the worst thing that had happened to Arma: no competitors on consumer market. When (if) it will became "mainstream" enough it will attract audience and that fact will force other studies to consider and idea of an infantry open-world sandbox. And because they will need to introduce something new to throw Casualarma from the throne, their games will offer a more complex game mechanics. So the pendulum will basically start a backward swing. For example, there is a well-known World Of Tanks MMO. Wargaming (the game's developer) was the first to discover the idea of tank-themed session MMO and it was a huge success that brought them tons of money. For several years they enjoyed absolute monopoly and weren't in much hurry in introducing new features. But with time their game started to became outdated graphics and feature-wise, people started to want something new, so the challenger appeared. Gajin's War Thunder used basically WoT's mechanics but provided, among other improvements, way better graphics, simulator mode and combined battles (when tanks and planes fight in the same gaming session). After another year Mail.ru (quite shitty company, but that's not the point) announced their Armored Warfare — a carbon copy of World of Tanks but with modern tanks instead of WWII ones. Just like Wargaming couple of years ago, Bohemia enjoys absolute monopoly for more than a decade now thanks to being a developer of a niche game. If they go mainstream that status quo will inevitably change and hopefully we will see new military open-world sandboxes with new ideas, more complex simulation and better engines. PS: Or maybe Arma will drastically improve. I still believe in it. :D

How Long And How Much Work To Build Future New Engine?

Out of all languages around Bohemia have decided to emulate the 30-year old one with one of the steepest learning curves and countless possibilities to shoot at own foot, i.e., a complete overkill for average mission maker's purposes. GJ, that's the Bohemia Interactive I know! <_<

    A3 futuristic

Yeah, I know, I was talking about "I totally love the setting, why does everybody hate it? Here, all equipment has real-world counterparts" kind of threads. As for "reused content" I think there's not much amphibious/naval assets in BI's library to just slap a new texture on and call it a day so there's still hope. :D

    A3 futuristic

Oh, that thread again. Sorry, you're two years late to the party. Hate to break it to you, but Arma 3 technologically not much different from OFP set in 1985. Yes, apart from half-assed FLIR and portable ATGMs implementation there's noting new created in 50 years time in Arma's world. Chinook that joined service two months after Carribean Crisis (yes, that crisis with Khrushchev, Kennedy, Castro and Che Guevara) is black, has sharp edges and retractable gear, so much futurism! T-100 is literally worse than T-80 (no reticle and no proper FCS, intentionally pixelated sight - it even worse than some T-55) but it looks like the tank that rots at some Russian yard since late 90's, so much hi tech atmosphere! MBT Revolution, despite being pasted over with camers, still has only one viewport on driver's position, just like in some PzKpfw I from 1934 but its camo sooo cool, sooo futuristic! A-10D still can't into A-10A functionality but now has square engines because in the future everything is black and square with edges so sharp you can accidentally cut yourself with them. Infantry simulation is basically the same like OFP, except you need a full mag to kill anybody wearing "protection". Futurism itself is not the problem if it is properly implemented. But it is not, both technologically and content-wise. Factions weapons and vehicles are inconsistent and sometimes don't even make much sence (newest German tank owned by the poor AAF who couldn't even afford an SPAAG to accompany it and in general using some British equipment stolen from scrapyard? Really? 'Muricans had thrown away their national pride and bought Israeli tank from 20th century? That's some Cold War Soviet satellite-state level here. And, of course, interesting approch to the Tempest's armor). For me, Arma 3 feels like Arma 2 with messed up factions and way less content (yes, I know that BI had problems and understand that but it doesn't change the end result). There's nothing futuristic in it. And because BI decided to abandon '85-2015 range there's nothing contemporary or Cold War either. In the end, futuristic setting feels like a lame excuse for throwing in slightly reused content.
  16. Great to see that this amazing mod is still in development! :D Thank you for your work guys!
  17. That's strange, I've never saw any usual ads and "you have played with premium content" window after mission when using vanilla bipods.
  18. A little bit offtopic, but you don't need to own that DLC to use bipods (and rangefinders probably) without any restrictions.

BIS should release old models and textures unbinarized

That will look like BI saying: "Sorry, we're not skilled enough to make models for our own game, here, take those sources and finish them for us please.". I doubt that they will risk bad publicity for couple of old half-finished models.

This is probably a strange question but is there any way to cause certain ERA block to explode via script? I've tried setHit command with various part names found in config but none of them worked.
  22. Hi guys, I have couple questions. 1. Is it possible to disable ACE medical system completely either from mission settings of server config? 2. How do I use DAGR with Vector? I'm able to connect them and measure distance to certain target but I can't seem to find where DAGR shows its position.
  23. Finally gave the new version a try yesterday and I'm gotta say that you did a great job (I'm sure you're already aware of it but it didn't hurt to say again)! Probably for the first time in Arma 3 everything from sounds to units felt "completed". Can't wait for the rest of content to be upgraded and released, I'm sure it will be the second birth of Arma 3 (this time for real :D). Oh, and I totally loved "polishing" on some weapons, it gave them a metallic look and partially hid Arma 1-level textures so the weapon looked actually nice.
  24. "I want to moralize and noone should be able to rationally object me", huh? We're on the outher side of Great Firewall in case you haven't noticed yet. Saying that making a game map vaguely resembling certain real world territory is morbid and genocidal is like saying that WoT/WT players who prefer German tanks are literally soldiers of 3rd SS Panzer Division.
