Well, after playing quite a bit of Arma 2 with this new patch, I can say that performance hasn't really changed but it seems a lot more stable. Stutter is pretty much gone, or happens very little, and the game crashes a lot less. It also seems to have fixed the "Out of memory" crashes I would get when loading save games in some more complex missions, like Manhattan in Harvest Red. So my vote goes towards the "Stable - performance same or not improved much, but a lot more stable" option.

My rig:

Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 @ 3.00GHz

nVIDIA GeForce GTX 280 1GB

2GB DDR2 RAM

so far no different results comparing my last post about it (http://forums.bistudio.com/showpost.php?p=1618349&postcount=78)

still no crashes, still no ground texture probs anymore, still feeling of smoother gameplay, less stutters etc. (alle tests so far on chernarus, user missions & official ones, no mods used) .. so far so good ...

actual arma2.cfg:

language="German";

adapter=-1;

3D_Performance=93750;

Resolution_Bpp=32;

Resolution_W=1280;

Resolution_H=1024;

winW=800;

winH=600;

winDefW=800;

winDefH=600;

FSAA=3;

localVRAM=536870912;

nonlocalVRAM=525729792;

Windowed=0;

Render_W=1440;

Render_H=900;

actual ingame settings for testing:

Everything maxed out except

VD=3848

3d res = menu res = 1280x1024 (100%)

AA = High (very high not supported for my gfx card)

I posted earlier that I was one of the ones that got a huge performance increase with these two patches. I forgot to mention that I still have to turn Hyperthreading off. Otherwise I get constant stuttering. With hyperthreading turned off in the BIOS everything is very smooth even with visibility set to 10k. I haven't compared frame rate pre/post patches. It was always good, except that I had to keep range down to 5k. Now turning it up to 10k has no noticeable impact on frame rate. Before the patches doing this would make the game unplayable.

Did you try the startup command -cpucount=4 ?

Works for me. Didnt touch HT in BIOS yet.

patch 69645

Ive been running with 63826 since it arrived and no complaints at all (or any beta previous).

I installed 69645 the other day .. and bam ... really bad FPS ... really laggy on map, laggy when moving and turning. I did updated Nvidia drivers to latest WHQL just before and had not played for a while and I use mods.

So today I simply loaded the game with 69645 vanilla and the SP mission "Sipher" running it at night as a single SF player at 50 percent difficulty. This is basically hardly any enemy near you at start apart from heli insertion ... just you and no other AI at night in Chernarus. The map was laggy on start for briefing when it was dynamically placing items .. 5 second pause to then allocate items ready for mission. In the heli it was lagging and then when i got out spinning was awful the best way to describe it is the lag and fps was like I was in a middle of a large firefight with 5 heli and 4 10 man units each side and I was dropped into it, in the day maxxed out using all AI mods. Yet im 1 man no AI near me and at night with no mods.

So .. I then exited and saved the mission at the point of stood after heli insertion. Exited, flipped my "beta" folders around so it would load 63826 and went back into game. I then resumed the Cipher mission, low and behold the heli is still flying away im stood on my own and spinning on a dime, smooth as silk like the map was totaly empty and acting as it should.

I repeated this on simply 1 man on different maps, flipping between old and new beta to load same mission, every time it was the same.

So to report, never in any time of using A2 and betas have I seen such a massive performance drop to unplayable since using them. Something is very strange with the way its handling in the 69645 beta. I can repeat the issue time & time again.

To recap by simply introducing 69645 my system running A2 with usual setting never changed (with or without any mods) and just putting 1 player on a map runs like ive installed it on a single core 1 gig machine with built in graphics card ... remove and play 1.05 or old beta and it runs totally fine.

BI ... if you want more info I fine with supplying more just ask me what you need.

To conclude ...

"69645 on my rig runs so bad that its unplayable"
Which im totally surprised at becuase all betas and A2 have not been that bad at all for me. PLus the difference is so obvious and extreme that if this was a released patch I would be making some serious complaints to BI ... im not because this is beta but you might want to see how this works on rigs like my combination because so far this runs to the point of broken almost. Going by the first post its not.

Also ... even if it isnt the latest, the most recent one only has a small change log and doesn't fix any of the large engine changes brought into the previous large change-log beta.

IE: It still brings them into the new one but with some minor updates, surely my post would still count right? Not a very helpful post .. bit nit-picky if you ask me :)

EDIT:

For the sake of argument I just installed 69782 (which is, lets face it ... "the previous one with some minor additions") .. and no shock, its the same results, so my points above apply to the very latest patch, just to make that clear.

Errhmm it's not an argument i just informed you know that you talked about the previous patch in the latest patch thread, it's not like you have to prove anything lol :p

P.S. far from all changes are listed in the changelog :)

Which as is stands is still valid even in this thread, was my point.

Well, its more to make it clear im experiencing it in the very latest so other reading it wont assume im reporting an issue with an old patch making it not valid, ref the reasons why i made the update edit.

Nothing to prove, just to "make sure" ... Id rather someone post a suggestion or feedback than simply point out a minor detail was all.

P.S. far from all changes are listed in the changelog

True but unless it stated "improvements from feedback on patch & issues with 69645 with more optimisation" then its pretty much going to act the same.

Sorry if i come of as argumentative, but I just thought pointing that out really didn't add much to it ... :)

After I confidently stated that

Installed 10.4 and slowdowns have been eliminated. Average is back to 25-30 with beta.

I've played some more and it's not the case.:(

I haven't been playing much recently so I've just spent the last few hours trying the last few betas with a simple test mission on Utes using a few squads of infantry.

Hardly a scientific test but here's my quick impressions, all FPS measured with Fraps with Task Manager open, no discernible difference between versions on CPU usage and tried a few runs just to make sure the textures were loaded.

63826: The best performing, aiming "feels" snappy and consistent FPS

69645: Looks nicer for some reason, aiming "feels" a bit heavy and intermittantly get a FPS bog-down where it slows to around 3FPS

69782: Again, looks better than 63826 but aiming "feels" heavy again even though the FPS is the same. The major problem is the bog-down is even more severe, dropping to 0/1FPS for a few seconds then continuing. Tried to find a pattern but it's too random for me to tell. Unplayable and infuriating.

And I was going to post all that ^^ then remembered I wasn't actually running a vanilla game...:o

So, tried again.

63826: The best performing, aiming "feels" snappy and consistent FPS

69645: Looks nicer for some reason, aiming "feels" a bit heavy but NO major FPS bog-down

69782: Again, looks better than 63826 but aiming "feels" heavy again even though the FPS is the same. No major slow-down

I've been at this for 2 1/2 hours now so it could be purely my imagination and frankly there's got to be better things to be doing with my time but I have a hunch that when I was running a sound mod (CSM to be precise, although not blaming that one I don't have another installed to try) I got the major slowdowns, no sound mod = no major slow downs on the last two beta's although it feels heavier to play.

Can anyone else verify this or am I just talking crap as usual?

Hello :)

Really low spec computer here :P

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Processor 3800

Geforce 7950, latest drivers

2 Gigs ram

Windows XP Media Center Edition

Latest series of beta's yield a frame rate in Benchmark 1 and 2 of 23/8 respectively. Previously was getting 29/16 roughly.

Will continue tweaking settings, as this enormous a drop sounds like it may be something with my install settings.
