Archamedes 10 Posted April 23, 2010 (edited) I am a big fan of the splinter cell games and still play and have the first 4. Always good to see how it evolves, and damn the first one is soo difficult now. Anyway, the 2 year wait was definatly worth it, The game has definatly got me hooked. No more blocks on killing, you can kill everyone. sam can now pick up guns from enemies and upgrade them o have sights, silencers and scopes. The game has also adopted the rainbow 6 vegas hide behind cover move instead of the simple wall walk. The one thing i love the most that makes it more realistic and much harder is guards will relentlessly presue you, flank you and shine torches in darker areas. In previous games you would alert a guard and he would follow a set patrol route, and give up after 30 seconds then return. Now they will randomise their path and completely cover an entire building, shining into the rafters, over the side of walkways (in case you are hanging down waiting to jump up and pull them over) and will properly investigate a whole area. I actually didnt expect this and was caught out when i realised the soldiers from the very other end of a double warehouse just kept on coming from one end to the other and it wasn't a small area either. Another thing that bothered me was that enemies in previous games had a very limited or repeated 2 line dialogue when speaking to themselves or when looking for you. Now each soldier has a completely unique long listed dialogue, using swear words, ambiant radio chatter, and taunting you out of the dark. The cinematics and shakey camera makes it look beautiful, the interrogation technique is awesome. You can bash them into the destructible enviornment and actually see them start to bruise and bleed. The mark and execute move is really fun to do, and is another rainbow 6 feature. The cool thing is that after you have marked your targets you only press one button and sam will perform the shooting himself without having to aim, He will do it in a stylish hollywood style too. but you cant do it willy nilly. In order to be awarded a mark and execute move you have to complete a stealth hand to hand takedown. Finally theres the last known position. When the enemies last spot you a sillouette of sam will appear and enemies will suppress that area until they either run over and realise you aren't there anymore or spot you somewhere else. Its very handy for flanking or escaping Now for the spoilers and be careful because there is a very big spoiler here The story starts with sam kind of doing the bourne identity thing, where he is avoiding the government and hiding out of view. He is on a personal mission to find the man that murdered his daugther. The stories follows from double agent along the path of you killing lambert at the end and not the alternative ending of you saving him. He then gets tracked down by Grim who by cell phone warns him that government agents are trying to kill him and tells him how to escape. So after a brief tutorial mission kicks in the "mansion" level starts. Now i watched the demonstration walkthrough for this mission on youtube and they have changed a hell of a lot and made it much longer. Anyhow Sam finds his daughters killer and is interrupted by a squad of splinter cells. He again escapes with the help of grim and now is on a mission with grim to prevent the presidents assasination in return for information about his daughter (big spoiler warning) who actually hasn't been killed at all, this was a lie by lambert to protect her. You end up attacking the 3rd echelon office, killling staff and other splinter cells. It takes on a very stong storyline and is very much like "24" When jack bauer is on the run, doesn't know who to trust, government corrpution and a big twist comes in the storyline. Very good game so far and alough they changed the game a hell of a lot form the early concepts to please the fanboys who kicked off because they didn't like the idea of sam being a hairy tramp. anyhow i will definatley be playing this for some time to come Edited April 23, 2010 by Placebo
bangtail 0 Posted April 23, 2010 (edited) Used to be a good Franchise up until 'Double Agent'. 'Pandora Tomorrow' and 'Chaos Theory' were both amazing games. Unfortunately, it's like most games Ubiwank has anything to do with these days, it went from stealthy infiltration to run around killing (with the occasional stealth moment thrown in to maintain 'consistency'). I might have bought it just for nostalgia's sake but because of that stupid protection (which has subsequently been broken. Way to go Ubi, taunting the pirates on Twitter was a masterstroke  ), there isn't a snowball's chance in hell. I'll be interested to hear what people have to say about it once it's released though (for PC) PS : That's not the way to add a spoiler. Example : [spoiler.] blah blah blah things people don't necessarily want to know blah blah blah [/spolier.] (Just drop the periods inside the square brackets) Edited April 23, 2010 by BangTail

Aeneas2020 10 Posted April 24, 2010 I have to admit its not really a classic splinter cell game but at least they admitted that going in. Im so dissapointed in games moving away from what made the originals great i just accept each game on its own merits now and conviction is basically 24 the game (except i don't like 24 the tv show lol). Archamedes 10 Posted April 24, 2010 (edited) well i guess as its the 5th installment of the series they really have to change things and evolve it otherwise it wil be boring doing the same old thing with the same old moves and the same gadgets. A lot of people say chaos theory reached the peak of the series and double agent was a dissapointment. However i liked both and saw each game evolve and get better. Conviction feels like a completely new game altogether and all the controls have been flipped on their arse and a lot of old moves have gone replaced with brand new ones. I found a comic strip mocking the long dialogue of random soldiers Edited April 24, 2010 by Archamedes

bangtail 0 Posted April 24, 2010 (edited) Guillemot said the company did not test the new system with actual gamers, but the company's lawyers and accountants showed strong support for it. AKA The last people you need to be listening to when attempting to measure how well a game/protection system will be received by actual gamers. This is the biggest problem with the gaming industry these days, it's controlled by bean counters who wouldn't know a good game if it brutally sodomized them with an iron bar tipped with a live hand grenade. 4 IN 1 0 Posted April 25, 2010 (edited) Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said, "This plan will create a great environment for the gamer and protect our games from piracy. It's a win-win situation for everyone. Our gaming centers will be equipped with the latest in hardware technology for gamers to enjoy our latest titles. Our service coordinators will make sure each gamer has been properly licensed before allowing them into the transparent gaming cubes to play the games." So by making their games into arcade game they acturally think they can make a lots more money out of it? Good luck on that Mr. Sunshine:D Edited April 25, 2010 by 4 IN

Laqueesha 474 Posted April 26, 2010 (edited) The entire Splinter Cell franchise went downhill with Double Agent. While I enjoyed both Double Agent and Conviction, they were not true Splinter Cell games in the sense. Similar to Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis and Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising, if you will. The stealth aspect of Conviction was completely gone, while in Double Agent it was prevalent, to a point. The entire series went into some action-packed Rambo thrill ride adventure, when that is not what it is about. The only thing(s) I really enjoyed about Conviction were the customizable weapons (though that was present in some other Splinter Cell games), the new hand-to-hand melee kills and the mark and execute feature. If those could've been implemented into a more Splinter Cell-like game, it would've been a success. As a game, Conviction was fairly decent. As a "Splinter Cell" game, it was horrendus. Newcomers to the Splinter Cell franchise will probably enjoy Conviction, while Splinter Cell stealth purists will not. Maddmatt 1 Posted April 26, 2010 I loved the series and was a big fan until Double Agent. I was looking forward to it until it came out and I tried the demo on PC. Man it sucked badly. Apparently the version for the PS2 and Xbox made by the Montreal team was actually good. If only they just took that and ported it to the "next gen" systems with enhanced graphics. Conviction looks awesome but damn it's amazing how dumbed down some aspects are. The silhouette to show where the enemies think you are, I mean come on. Part of the excitement of a stealth game is working this out for your self. And the "mark and execute" is the biggest shock of all. How are gamers and the press so excited about a feature that is basically just letting the game take control from the player and kill the enemies for you. Come on, if you don't want to control the character then go watch a movie. Regardless of those stupid features it does look like a good game to me. I'm not keen on paying full price though, not with that copy protection system. This is the biggest problem with the gaming industry these days, it's controlled by bean counters who wouldn't know a good game if it brutally sodomized them with an iron bar tipped with a live hand grenade. Agreed.
