Converting Nogovo To Arma II

Recommended Posts

THIS ISLAND ADDON IS CURRENTLY IN EARLY ALPHA STAGES

So this project has turned into a much larger one. I'm now recreating all the original OFP islands in one large map. I'm using real world data to update the elevation to fit better into the ARMA II engine.

Here's a basic idea of whats being produced:

ofpevoislandpos.th.jpg

everonmountains.th.jpg Everon mountain range

everonhedgerows.th.jpg

some higher resolution farmland with hedgerows on everon. Also has some line guides for road networks.

Project: OFP Isles : Evolution

Project Direction: I'm using 30m DEM files to recreate the original Operation Flash Point : Resistance Islands into one large map. Novoga was a fictional area so I used the original elevation data and slightly changed some of it to better fit. The islands are larger then the OFP counter parts. While some areas are based off of the original, others are/will be completely new additions.

It's been 12 years roughly since OFP:R hit the shelves, these islands will be recreated with that in mind. I'm going to try and use only vanilla addons here but I may use some odds and ends here to better suite the environment.

The current goal is to pump out a decent BETA so most of this is subject to change.

Current Island Status: NOC vers (Normal Object Count)

Everon: (1.6x the original ofp land mass)

-Elevation (90% done)

-Refining Sat Map (25% done)

-Road Network lines and smoothing (75% done)

-Towns Named

Malden: (1.4x the original ofp land mass)

-Elevation (75% done)

-Refining Sat Map

-Working on road network lines and smoothing (50% done)

-Towns Named

Kolgujev: (1.4x the original ofp land mass)

-Elevation 75% done

-Refining Sat Map

-Working on road network lines and smoothing (40% done)

Desert Island: (1x the original ofp land mass)

-Elevation 75% done

-Refining Sat Map

Novoga:(1.6x the original ofp land mass)

-Elevation 60% done

-Refining Sat Map

Current Island Status: LOC vers (Low Object Count)

Thanks to some feedback from RG, I've decided to plan for a low object count version. I think it would be good to have a backup in case CTI lags too much with the normal object count version and can serve for flight sim missions as well.

OFPI:E Alpha_0.6.rar

Currently alpha includes higher resolution sat images for everon along with city names and painted road guide lines. There are NO OBJECTS currently placed. I haven't linked all the .cpp files so you could get some errors in your arma output file.

Anyone who downloads is welcome to post comments/questions/concerns here. I don't mind if you tell me you don't like something, but please give a reason and why. I want to make this map for everyone so think of this as not a "madmardigan project" but a community one. Thank you.

IF YOU ARE WORKING ON A MOD THAT NEEDS SPECIFIC ADJUSTMENTS...

Please pm me with details like for example if you were making a submersible submarine and need a specific depth for the ocean floor etc etc.

Please stop bumping your own threads.

That second post cannot be held liable nor defined herein as a "bump". No sir, that second post contains information pertinent to the topic at hand and greatly resonates the frustration felt by said poster.

I would now like to enter exhibit A-0:"documented statement made by Moderator WOlle",sub exhibit A-1:"bumping" and sub exhibit A-2:"Threads".

In exhibit A-0 moderator WOlle clearly defines this thread as ownership of MadMardigan with moderator WOlle's words, "your own threads". He further continues his inflammatory interjection of slander and accusation with sub exhibit A-1 and sub exhibit A-2. Both sub exhibit A-1 and sub exhibit A-2 falsely accuse that Mr. MadMardigan has made numerous "threads" and has been "bumping" said threads.

Further more, sub exhibit A-2:"Bumping" denotes that Mr. MadMardigan is in an indefinite perpetual state of renewing said thread which is clearly false as no one can continuously nor indefinitely bump a thread with a single post. It is well known that a man cannot function on any infinite plane of existence, it is scientifically proven agianst the laws of physics.

Mr. MadMardigan has generously agreed to make a formal statement.

"I realize the monotony of forum moderating can be trying at times, I would like to admit I have been sarcastic with the statement I made in post #2, I would apologize for any inconvenience or emotional distress this might have caused. I will however maintain that this post contained information and was in no way intended to "bumping" the thread, it was merely informing the general mass's that the "conversion" is currently in progress. Thank you for your time. Now please excuse me, I need to pinch a loaf... there's a turtle head peaking..."

EDITED MEMORANDUM ATF 1a

**Mr. MadMardigan has had a successful "pinching of the loaf" and would like to report that his bowel movement went swell. He would like to ask for your prayers through this trying time.

haha, great post.

I don't know about any legal concern but I would say that go a head... it most likely won't be any problem and if you can defend yourself that well on the "MadMardigan409 vs W0lle bump case" I don't think you will have any problem in court vs BIS :).

good luck..

oh, and if you good on converting bis island.. then maybe you can help me convert one of my teams island that have great detail even for ArmA2 standard yet was made in OFP. Would love to see it converted but don't know how.

Lol !!!

Everon is ported to A2 by Sgt. Ace but its not realy finished.

The forrest need more trees and the towns need more buildings.

Nogova would be awesome if on A2 !

If you could make Nogova and Everon together on one Map that would be much more awesome ;)

keep on doing it and give us screenshots about your status...

Nogova is a very simple island to make. But I rather work on something from the scratch ;)

Most lovely places on Nogova that I remember:

- river, bridge and a lake (cove)

- dolina aka valley with a small village inside and a graveyard

- road leading up to the hills on north and snow

- that little village with lake nearby

- Lipany with great villas and the square

- factory in the desert

- port with socialistic buildings up on NW

All this can be made from scratch on a new map :)

==================================================

*gasp*

OBJECTION! Your honor.

Mr. Shezan clearly has a biased, unestablished non-professional opinion and has not been called upon/ nor shall be called upon the witness stand. Further more he has not been established as a credible witness in this court. I would like his statement stricken from the record, we should proceed with the ceremonial lesson teaching tool... PL-101, wherein Mr. Shezan shall be beaten about the head and shoulders for this outburst.

It must be maintained as per Mr. Madmardigan's post #3 wherein a strongly detailed argument has been established in Mr. Madmardigan's defense. This thread acts as a vehicle upon which information of the project's status must be allowed. the status of the project changed between posts #1 and #2. Mr. Madmardgian is clearly within his right to inform the mass's that the status has changed.

The fact that the thread is bumped after a successfully completed post is clearly subsequential and does not reflect the intentions of Mr. Madmardigan.

==================================================

It is Mr. Madmardigan's intention that this map be revitalized within the boundaries of Arma II's code for the purpose of; but not limited to: a "kick ass" CTI map.

1. The towns will be expanded upon simply to showcase the added abilities of Arma II and the code shall encompass a streamlined approach to help the AI navigate this classic landscape and or wage warfare.

2. Vegetation shall be given special attention to revamp the visual beauty and play a strategic roll in how one will transverse the map.

3. Buildings may be replaced or added for a more interactive experience.

Untill any legal problem is resolved this project shall continue with the name "Nogovo" and will be inspired by the classic operation flash point map called "Novoga".

To answer Mr. GranQ's question (all rights reserved), Mr. Madmardigan has agreed upon creating a non-official but detailed tutorial on how to covert old OFP maps if and or when this project succeeds.

Mr. Muecke has brought up an extremely interesting and valid point which shall be further investigated and credit given.

Mr. Icebreakr has also interjected with a valid point. One must remember that the purpose of this project is to relive past experiences with new additions and "ass kicking-ly fun times".

No further comments at this time, thank you.

All legal nonsense aside, I might just put all the old OFP maps in there. I recall somone had started a simalar project quite some time ago but never saw anything come from it. Could be one hell of an interesting Arma II map. I noticed in the wiki they have a description of where each island is located from one another. This could be good. I'll keep you guys posted on the progress.

-Everon : eastern most island

-Nogova : due west of Malden "not far"

-kolgajev: central island?

-Malden : southern most island

You could take a look at "OFP World" (I think thats what it's called - and I think it was in the OFPIP project) - that was supposed to be all of the original islands in their original "relative positions", but was a bit much for computers back in those days...

ah tyvm, I'll see if I can't get into contact with the fellow, maybe make some alterations.

Tossing around the idea of putting in one completely new island as well but idk, I kinda want to stick to the original layouts and such to maintain that old ofp feel.

islandplacementconcept.th.jpg

I'm just going to do this by scratch, that way I can do whatever I like with it. If anyone is out there and is somewhat put off by this project due to something you've done in the past or that resembles this, just shoot me a pm and I'll put your name in the credits.

I think this placement should work well for CTI maps or some other game modes. I put in desert island for mission makers to have a place to use for what ever purpose they might need.

I had to use the old WrpTool to export the images but I'm concerned with what quality the elevation might be. Guess we will see. I might have to get in there and do some finagling with wilbur or something, I don't know.

I think I'll try converting this to greyscale, the pic size is 2048x2048 so this should make for a large custom map.

If anyone has any comments/requests/concerns or just advice I would gladly welcome it. All credit will go to whomever participates. While I enjoy tinkering with this sort of thing, my passion is with playing the game, so I want to streamline this and pump it out fairly quick but not at the cost of quality.

You could consider making Kolgejev in its Winter variant, that was a classic OFP map and would give you Winter, Temperate, Desert (desert island and part of Nogova) and Mediterranean style islands all on the same map...

I really like the idea of adding a snow version somewhere here. I might just make two version of this map, one all snow and the other original.

I'm having a bit of an issue with using a greyscale version. I can get it into visitor and view the islands but they're way too bumpy. I've spent some time now adjusting different variables throughout multiple programs to get it to some sort of original scale but it's just not right. Some of the terrain is way too high where others fit nicely. Is there some way to just export an exact scaled version of these maps or am I going to have to really just tweak this?

What i did was open up all the old .wrp files and export .bmp images of them. Then copy pasted each into a larger .bmp file. It's pretty obvious that there is some loss in detail by doing it this way. I realize that I might have to place all the objects and eyeball them. I might have to dig deeper and see if I can't just export the whole islands and change the objects placed. Any ideas?

I've been doing some digging and found some high res sat maps of the real world locations these islands are based off of. I'm considering doing a complete overhaul of the terrain here. It's been roughly 12 years since OFP hit the shelves so I would venture to say that the old ofp worlds could use some upgrades.

It's my goal here to create this map mainly for CTI. Since there are 4 large islands I would think we could have some navel battles. Once I get this thing to a stage worth looking at, perhaps I could add in some objects to help the CTI makers. I was thinking a navel factory would come in handy here. I could build the object off of existing docks and bunkers etc.

In the mean time I'll try to crate an island similiar to Nogova but with jungle feel to it and a nice airport/US base;)

I advise you to rather import the real world DEM from the islands in xyz format than photoshop-convert the sat images. You still can make corresponding satmaps afterwards. The slopes, valleys and mountains will look far better!

Sounds good icebreakr, I love the duala map you put out.

ZeroG, I think it deserves that much. Porting over the old blocky landscape just won't do. After looking at some high res sat photos of everon, it's clear that there is much more potential here then I originally had thought. I've only tinkered with map making so I'll have to find some tutes on importing the DEM files.

MadMardigan409: remember that Everon is basically a Croatian island of Krk - popular Czech vacation spot. But it only resembles it topographically. I have over than 2000 photos from it and it wouldn't be a problem recreating an "Everon 2010" project. But I have no free time for such a project :)

Nogova is on the other hand pretty cool map. I remember Psycho Killer mission for it, we loved racing all over the island :) but of course we would need to upgrade it with the latest technology, vegetation etc.

My priority right now is to make a jungle map + one looking pretty close to Takistan. And I think I can incorporate most of the Nogova "magic" into the first one.

All good broski. I want to create this OFP World map here and upgrade the topo maps. I'm going to keep the OFP names for the towns but upgrade them in the sense that it's been 12 yrs since they've seen war etc. Maybe add some small towns depending on what kind of room is left. It's not my intention to build an exact copy of what is existing on those islands today lol.

If you find yourself with some free time or have some DEM files I could use I would be thankful. If I can help you with anything you need for novoga just let me know.

Now that I'm looking at the wiki, it shows...

Everon: "Krk"

Malden: "Lefkada"

Kolgejev: "Tenerife"

Novoga: ???

Does anyone know if Novoga is a completely fictional/ made from scratch sort of map?
