Aliens vs Predator

Recommended Posts

I'm disappointed with the game myself. It seemed to me it was more about eye candy than gameplay, though I admit there's plenty of skill and timing involved with the blocking / countering of light and heavy attacks.

The trophy kill system was the main killer for me in MP, the fact you could kill or be killed by a single push of the "E" key, which triggered a cinematic-like kill animation that couldn't be canceled - it was as though I was more of a spectator rather than being involved in the kill or death. All you needed to do to trigger these kills was to be behind the target, or hit them with one heavy attack.

For now, I've preordered a copy of Natural Selection 2 (FPS/RTS hybrid), to get my hands on the alpha in the next month or so. Hoping it lives up to the original.

The trophy kill thing is poorly implemented and exceptionally useless as it can't be cancelled.

Excuse my spam post everyone.

I like AVP alot actually. But I have the WORST crashing issues. Every 15 mins or so, sometimes random at no specific time, the game will freeze. Then I have to restart my PC because it freezes my PC fully. I cant complete the Pred campaign because it crashes no matter what. Alien and Marine campaigns barely crash/freeze.

Over all, I like the game, Marine campaign took me maybe 3 hours. Alien was the shortest but more fun in my opinion. Pred is a brutal campaign. Fun but really repetitive.

The Marine campaign was the best though. Best made I mean. It was the longest and had the most atmosphere.

The sad part is this really doesn't stand up to AVP1 or AVP2(Which I prefer). Its just clunky and ALOT of features from AVP2 are missing. The atmosphere as a marine is missing. I mean the Aliens almost never pop out from unexpected places so its not very "scarey," its more creepy. Like what happened to Aliens popping out of vents and stuff. The old game had that and it was great. In the new game, Aliens may come out of the floor, but they are so slow, you see them and your like "Oh its one of them...Let me shoot it now." Another thing that REALLY bothers me is the 'set' jump points. Wtf. You cant jump freely anymore. They have specific areas on the map that you can jump to, which sucks. :( One thing I really miss is the Aliens Auto death head bite. In MP, you could jump at a marine and it would kill him instantly, biting off its head. Now you have all these sweet finishing moves but the are slow and repetitive, not to mention they leave you completely vulnerable. There are more things missing but whatever. Basically I'm just a bit dissapointed. :(

About the MP, I haven't really played much because I couldn't find a server with more than 1 or 2 people in it.....I did survival with Aeneas2020 and that was great fun, but...there are two maps. Such a fail.

Overall the game is fun, but lacks alot and the SP campaigns are decent, not very repayable though. I have been replaying the Alien campaign though. I really like it, its very fun. I just need to finish the Predator campaign.

Holy shit, Enad. You're on fire!

I was thinking of getting this game. I'm disappointed at the way it looks like it's turned out. Was really looking forward to it as well. For me, first disappointment of 2010, I say that though with not having bought the game.

Honestly, I absolutely love the game, but the short game length, sound problems (seriously. The first patch they release breaks sound for a large number of people and they haven't hinted at fixing it in their forums), and the random crashes (well, I haven't experienced any on DX10 with the sound set to crap, but DX11 still crashes randomly).

Other than those things the game is really good, and coop survival is fun, and the maps are perfectly built for it, but after 3-4 rounds of it you won't want to play it again (not without new maps and new weapons)

For the price I'd say it's not worth it (again, game length), especially in Australia. It's been released on Steam at a higher than normal price knowing full well that it's a fragment of the game and they're going to release the rest of it as pay money to DLC.

I'm thinking of getting a refund tbh. To my knowledge, Steam always gives you one "no questions asked".

Now I quite like the game but I am not going to review it or something because i have not finished it yet. But there is one thing that is not related to gameplay itself that I want to rant about......

Why is this game so dependent on steam ? I mean even the physical copy that I bought off the store ? what is the point then, and what difference there is from not downloading from steam other than saving bandwidth ?

Ok I don't want to get into another steam for and against arguments, but I always thought of steam as an option. An option that I am obviously not a fan of. I just think that forcing people to use steam is a bad idea, I might understand it for valve games but not for others. I hope that this trend is not going to become more common.

Ug.

That's pity it would have been good on my LAN.

I bought Left4Dead once I realised that Steams Offline mode allows me to LAN play.

I was (un)dead chuffed.

But I only got to use it the once before Steam had killed it.

I don't know what it had updated or why any updates that I had not appllied (and specifically configured not be applied) should disable the game from working correctly but it did.

And so I haven't really played it.

I would have played it much more but now everytime I launch it Steam wants me to updates all sorts of things and god knows what else.

I only want to play I for a quick five minutes so when it takes half an hour to an hour to unexpectedly reconfigure while everyone in the room is moaning, things like that just don't get used.

I can see why they do use Steam. But I don't think I'm willing to buy another Steam game for my LAN again. Its' just too user unfriendly.

Annoyingly this means Red Orchestra 2 will probably be borked again too as well.

A pity because these are 3 of the exact sort of games my LAN was created for. What a waste.

Guys, wait for the first DLC and patches, I'm sure we'll get both on PCs. Its a great game and Rebellion & Sega won't let it die off in this "1.0" state.

Wait to pay for content that should have been there in the 1st place?

No thanks.

It could have been a great game, there is no doubt about that, but it's a case of revenue vs quality.

They (SEGA/Rebellion) knew they could milk the franchise name and that's exactly what they are going to do.

They should have simply remade the first one and beefed up the MP.

That would have been a epic.

I gave it a stab the other day on a mate's PC. It's OK, but I concur with the lamentation going on about kill animations. Way to fix me in one spot in front of a couple of combat synthetics. :(

What I found awesome/funny about the original AvP was that you could be speeding along past hapless humans as the alien, do a quick swipe and an arm would come off, hide, come back, swipe, rinse and repeat.

Im playing the original at the mo. It was $5.00 on Steam.

Ok, the graphics are errr ... dated, but the game itself is 100x better than the latest incarnation.

I miss the Predator's jumping from the new one but that's about all.

Funny thing being that even though avp 2 was made by a different team, the original and the new one were made by the same team, yet avp2 is much better than the new one. Rarely happens that way as we all know.

i hope to have it today or tommorow (as i will find time to visit shop)

shame no god-mode cheats yet, no fun of "ending level with pistol only" ;) but i hope i will find with time cheats to "easy lazy fun of playing" :)

i always loved AvP games, since 1

i used AvP since 2000 to 2003, i moded it with my friend

we chaned skins or this TV movies on walls to porn, we changed sounds to politicians speeches, we changed Aliens sounds to "miaow" (cat sound), we changed Predator sound to some drunkards begging "caugh up a stick" "give cent for wine" etc.

such moded AvP1 was real crazy :)

later we have done a lot of reskins , walls made of Salvadore Dali paintings or Hieronim Bosch paintings

i remember MP in AvP with grenade launcher and sticky-mines :D

like in RTCW we changed SS/FJ skins to "sports clothes wearing"

RTCW + AvP1 textures : http://www.rtcw.fpp.pl/images/pics/news/dres3.jpg

TOTALLY agree. Thats what I loved, even more so in AVP2! I really loved how you could jump at a marine and it would take his head off! Those were the good days....

My likes about the new AVP:

Visuals - while (for whatever reason) some reviews say the textures sucked I disagree. Sure, if you stop and stare at a patch of rock or grass, it doesn't hold par with Crysis, but as a whole when you're playing you'll never notice. This is the art of game design, creating the illusion of awesomeness even when it isn't. I'm glad the texture maps aren't off the wall like some games out there, otherwise I'd have to buy a new GPU and thats just not in the cards right now.

Single Player - Can't beat the experience of hunting humans as an Alien or Predator, and the game nails the fear factor for playing as a Marine IMHO. It has a complete story which ties in every faction, and of course it has Lance Henriksen FTW.

Kills - Pulling a humans head out through their stomach, or shoving your Alien tail up someones ass till it petrudes from their mouth is just classy.

Now for my gripes:

Single Player - I just feel like the campaign, while fun, could've done better. If you've played AVP1 or AVP2, this game is no different: Weyland Yutani Corp. is experimenting on Aliens and trying to capture a Predator. Shit happens, Marines get sent in. WooHoo. The "plot twist" at the end of the campaign isn't even a good twist considering its soooo expected:

Human player escapes with the android and the female soldier with an alien inside of her. Oh, but wait, the pilots are working for Weylund and they report that the specimen is secure blah blah blah bad guys win. Didn't see that one coming! (not)

So, in short, a nice new story would be nice. But then again, this story, while used, is the only sucessful and good AVP story we got. It works, it sells. The studio movies tried to start new stories and failed miserably (while this game does borrow a lot from AVP the movie, it still holds much more true to Aliens). So I suppose I would've preferred this story than a terrible one, but still, I would like something fresh for AVP.

Oh oh oh, and:

the queen battle blows!!! While I can understand they probably didn't want the same old cliche queen boss fight, the queen battle is like the climax to every AVP experience. I did enjoy the Predalien fight, and even goin after the Predator as an Alien (too easy btw), the queen battle just lacked in epicness. They tried, but failed.

Gameplay - Other than an unimaginative story, the game play is the same from AVP 1 and 2. While the melee combat works OK for single player, it blows for multi (more on that later). Otherwise, its the same old. But thats not a totally bad thing, as the same old game play works and I do enjoy it, I just think theres more cool stuff they could throw in. For example: Marines crawling through mud to cloak themselves from old pussycat face, or actually getting to drive around the APC or Drop ship.

Multiplayer - I'm not going to complain about the lack of dedicated servers considering it will be added later, but the damned gameplay just hurts. The first person melee system, while simple, just doesn't work. As and alien, one tail whip and the enemy is stunned, allowing for an immediate second tail whip which equals dead. Otherwise, all you gotta do to win is secondary attack and mash the E button to grab em and its "game over man, game over!"

Also, its VERY obvious the dev team was fearful about balance. I can imagine the nightmare of trying to balance three different factions, all that are complete opposites in gameplay. However, its so obvious the Marines are too powerful, the Predators are too weak, and the Alien attacks are just too strong. Its obvious the Predator relies on stealth, but even in close combat they just suck. And if you miss when you launch a disc blade or spear, you're screwed . . . They're better off against an Alien in melee than a Marine is, but they're also so fast they just zip off before you can finish em most of the time.

And its complete BS that a human Marine can BLOCK a Predator's attack. Complete and utter BS. I can understand having Marine melee block for balance . . . but cmon!

Biggest gripe about multiplayer: I SPAWN RIGHT IN FRONT OF AN enemy!!!! When this happens all the enemy has to do is hit E if their behind me, which is usually the case, and end my short spawn time. If its a Marine and I'm a Predator or Alien, I'm just dead as they'll rip me up with the pulse rifle before I can even realize where they are. Its BS to the Nth degree.

Final gripe - Alien controls. But thats just because I suck and lose my bearings too easy, cause its obvious other people have an easier time than I do. But the stupid "transition" button never works, so I have to transition to walls automatically . . . and when youre bouncing around a room trying to kill someone its juts confusing and I usually end up on a wall where they can grab me.

Otherwise, I do like this game, and recommend it to anybody whose an AVP fan. I just hope Rebellion doesn't abandon the game and can fix the few bugs but many gameplay issues. Hopefully they'll be more imaginative for the inevitable sequel (the game sold well).

I still can't understand the major multiplayer arguement of "all I have to do is heavy attack then spam e", when i play multiplayer i play marine most of the time and I get constant abusive messages because players keep trying to heavy attack me and each time I cut them down before they can attack. And my response is what it always is to them... if I was stupid enough to stand still while they used a heavy attack on me, then I shouldn't be playing. That's the point of it. As a marine you keep them At a distance, 'cause if they get close it's game over

well i get AVP3 and ... i don't like it :|

i don't like it because of the same reason that people not like DR (who loved OFP1)

cause AVP3 is completely different from AVP1, AVP2

i expected continuation of AVP1, AVP2 :|

i expected "stupid shooter to relax"

i was so pissed off when i must first complete "training mission" and push keyboard key H, push keyboard T, pu... i cannot move, shoot everything,

in AVP1, AVP2 i had ALL weapons available , here... daaamn no :(

worst thing is - Predator not refresh energy and has in mission only blades :(

i wanna stand on trees and shoot

i wanted stupid shooter like AVP1 "kill all yeah", i wanted continuation , not "you must go there, you must do that, you must..."

when i buying Vader, Behemoth - i expect death-black metal, when i buy 50Cent - i expect rap, when i buy BobMarley i expect reggae, when i buy "Bethoven" i expect classical music

so when i buy AVP3 i expect AVP1, AVP2 continuation and Predator with 4 weapons , not blades only and lack of energy to shoot :|

i'll return it to shop :] i haven't tried RTCW 2 yet, but i hope it is like RTCW 1

but no ctd or technical problems - graphics is super, only shame is that it is not "relax , turn off brain shooter"

Hi all

And the Balance Nazi's ruin yet another game franchise.

Is BIS the only company to realise war is not fair?

A good scenario designer can balance a scenario rather than developers trying to balance naturally and correctly unbalanced avatar characters.

Kind Regards walker

He should be right. In most countries (Australia and US included) the shops will tell you that you can't return after opening, but from what I hear from the consumer rights groups, that's a policy drummed up by shop keepers but the actual laws require them to give a refund. Doesn't mean they have to make it easy on you though.

Pulverizer heh, in Poland it is box edition, what Steam? :) some small game-shops have it already :) if your country not released it , don't accuse others of stealing, it was released February 16, 2010 in the US, February 19 in Europe, week ago

i already changed it to 2 music CD, cause i buy from someone i know without problem of changing :P

In most countries (Australia and US included) the shops will tell you that you can't return after opening

in Poland too, but it not means it is LEGAL and according to regulation, when i say that "i know law sir, cause i work in law sir" , they not argue anymore, cause they know they are cheating consumers about "no returns after leaving shop" :]

in Poland they use other method too: fading ink , you buy something and after few months your check is WHITE paper

ink disappeared , while guarantee is "12/24 months with proof of selling", and after few months you would not have proof, cause ticket disappeared

when i BUY anything important - i do xero of it or digital photo

you know how my girl once bought cheap perfumes ?

they selling on street perfumes, mostly copies, they say

"super occasion only 70 PLN", in shop 200",

so she said "sir, i can give 20, it is copy"

"no madame it is not a copy"

"after few years work in police i can recognize copy"

"okay, 20, have a nice day"

you can return many things, it just depends HOW you speak to seller ;)

-----------------------

back to AVP topic

shame that they changed game from being direct sequel in old style

Predator is one-man-army cosmic beast, not knight who run of energy after 5 shots, it was annoying when i had only blades after 3 kills

and this "training missions" and "enabled option, now type H, now you can turn head", i played AVP1 for 3 years, AVP2 for year

and now... i am treated like 5 years old kid "learn to walk" ???

i wanted shoot some cosmic beasts, not "hide and obey orders"

i remember how much FUN was playing and slaughtering all in AVP1

what is funny - such strong beast like Predator cannot destroy sentry gun, to kill man 2 shots ??? in movie after plazma-caster shot half of man was exploded, not 2 shots

haven't tried Alien missions, i finished 2 Marines missions, and i was pissed off in middle of first Pred mission and removed game

i really love AVP1 still from 1999 cause it was "stupid shooter to enjoy killing" :)

for me most important reason to uninstal is this stupid weak energy for Predator, in AVP1 you had many weapons and could shoot a lot

here, after few shots, good bye energy, only blade left

fun factor of Predator = ZERO

And its complete BS that a human Marine can BLOCK a Predator's attack. Complete and utter BS. I can understand having Marine melee block for balance . . . but cmon!

buahahahahaha, i not tested it, but it could be reaaaaaaly silly to block Predator hit by human arm :D even Arnie Swartz get ass kicked by Predator in movie

Yes. I too have a boxed copy. It requires to be activated on Steam account to play, because it uses Steamworks just like MW2 or the Valve games. You would know this if you had a legal copy.

Here, I took a photo of the back cover:

Wrong!

I know a few people who've done it. It can involve a lot of arguing but it has been done.

You can also chargeback your CC if they flatly refuse to refund you.
