DIH 1970s Generic African Units v1.2

by Dimitri_Harkov

Released 2010-01-21

This version is dependent on an old version of Project '85 that is no longer easily available.

Feel free to try anyhow - a new version is being worked on and will be available soon.

Download:

Download (signed; get the server key HERE):

Filefront

ArmA2Base.de (thanks Miller!)

Armaholic (thanks Foxhound!)

Required Addons:

Required Addons:

Vilas' Project '85 (these files: config | weapons | troops | vehicles | server key (optional))

Installation:

As usual: Set up a modfolder after extracting the archive and play (how-to).

What is it:

The addon contains three factions: The western UNITA, the eastern MPLA and the forces of colonial Portugal (these took part in the civil war / war for independence in Angola).

All have English voices, names from Angola and an array of old 70's weapons and vehicles.

New in 1.2:

-Portugal - a new faction has been added.

-thanks to ObmaR, UNITA and Portugal now have three versions of the SA 330 Puma helicopter each.

-all sides now have proper supply/reammo/repair/refuel trucks for warfare

-MPLA: jet pilot, BTR-60 APC, PT-76 amphibious light recon tank added

-some weapon loadouts have been changed (again!).

New in 1.1:

-both sides: AA soldier, Pilots, BRDM2, BRDM2 HQ, BRDM2 Ambulance, Supply, Ammo and Refuel trucks (with a funny script!), D30, ZU-23, Searchlight

-UNITA: M1919, M60_static, UH1Y (only as stand in until a suitable Heli for that timeframe becomes available).

-MPLA: DSHK, PK_static, Mi-17 unarmed, Mi-17 MG, Mi-17 Rockets, light soldiers with AKM, cap, PPS-43 and SKS, plus more variations of regular soldiers

-some weapon loadouts have been changed.

Beware:

If you are looking for ultra-realistic representations of specific African forces, you will be disappointed. These essentially are African people in old Soviet/CSLA uniforms respectively, and my attempts to create a Portuguese force with reskins only.

Flags:

Flags for MPLA, UNITA, FNLA and Portugal are included.

Usage: put one of the following lines in the init field of a flagpole in the editor:

this setFlagTexture "DIH_africa\data\flag_MPLA_co.paa"

this setFlagTexture "DIH_africa\data\flag_UNITA_co.paa"

this setFlagTexture "DIH_africa\data\flag_FNLA_co.paa" (note that there are no FNLA units in this addon, however).

this setFlagTexture "DIH_africa\data\flag_POR_co.paa"

Notes:

I started this addon because I wanted to do some missions covering the Angolan civil war.

Half way through I tought I had to stop because of Icebreakr's Isla Duala project, but since his work is in a different timeframe, I continued.

Now I have reached a stage where some nice warfare missions are possible. Even three-sided ones!

Known Bugs:

-UNITA soldiers have white hands

-I have not yet had the time to fully reskin some of the vehicles. That's why you'll notice some wrong markings.

Credits:

I want to point out that I didn't do a single model and only a few textures. Most stuff in here is from Project '85. Most of my work was with configs only.

Thanks to:

-Vilas and everyone who contributed to his Project '85

-ObmaR: permission to port and reskin his Puma 330 versions from Bushwars Conflict mod (Original credits: ObmaR, DigiA, Ou Matroos, FALCON 1)

-Some reskins have been done using Ebud's Soldier Unhiform Patterns. Thanks for sharing your great template!

-Portuguese Vertical Lizard Camo based on work by BlueFox/Korgen.Info

-kju for pointing me to the right direction when I was close to getting mad

-BIS for their games

-my wife for sharing me with ArmA2 with patience :)

in case of any doubts that may appear from others

as this addon is only new config without touching existing addons - i have nothing against

and i think that other people who participated in P85 probably will not protest

it is just new file with config changes

names changed, white faces changed to afro faces and some more as extra file

it is config-job, so if someone ask "what" - i answer :

> even if you want make "other config" for P85 as your optional addon for example "extremal big dispersion, nearly like RTCW or Dragon Rising AI" of "super far advanced"

and it not changes P85 or my addon integrality (Alien APC, Modern Polish troops addon, M109 and Bradleys)

you can do other config and release your own version as for example "100 meters fight" or "long distance fight" or even "20 magazines for every soldier" :)

because i have no time, i cannot help making new units like Angola army etc.

but in making other extra file addon, that not changes existing addon file, but uses it , i see nothing wrong

just like with "sound replacements"

if someone want do "sound replacement" addon file (new file with your tag to put along with existing) for P85 or VIL_ addon - you can do it :)

we have many skilled people who do sound-mods, if they want do sound-mod for US Vehicles pack - you can, the same will come to my next releases as Russian rifles etc.

but i just stated this in case of any doubts that could appear

not to offtop this topic, i am ending my offtopic and explanations

No, some wear different forms of caps. I think there are even models with bare heads, but I have not used them.

That's some very useful stuff right there, I'd love to see you continue with it - because you can't have too many factions in an African civil war.

Truely nice units and nice idea Dimitri, well done ! :)

I'd love to see you continue with it

I agree with that. What about giving them some air support ? (humble suggestion) :o

Thanks!

I agree with that. What about giving them some air support ? (for example)

Indeed I have decided to give them some more stuff. Mainly because when I was converting a warfare mission for my african units, I discovered that they were missing a lot of units/vehicles to work with warfare.

I added: D30, Ammo-, Refuel- and Repair-Trucks, static machine gun emplacements (DSHK, PK, M60, M1919), ZU23 AA guns, searchlights, BRDM-2 standard, BRDM-2 HQ, BRDM-2 Medevac, AA soldiers (Strela 2 - on a sidenote: are there any FIM-43 Redeye models around?).

I have also corrected some weird weapon choices (e.g.: SL's have binoculars now).

ATM I'm working on some irregulars because my units look too much like regular western forces. While elite units would look like this for sure, I guess most soldiers wouldn't be as well equiped.

I'd also love to add some air support... but AFAIK there are no suitable aircraft around. However, I might add the Mi-8 or even the UH-1.

Not exactly generic but the Hind 'A' was involved in atleast 2 African wars during the seventies

Great news Dimitri :)

Cool, some irregulars/militia units would be nice additions for sure.

Yep i understand. Mi-8 and UH-1 are good choices, and perhaps you can also look at Mi-24 and Su-25 even if they may be a bit too "modernish" for 70's african stuff... :)

A small update:

mplali1.th.jpg

On the left you can see a first WIP version of an 'ill equiped' MPLA soldier with bare head (BIS model reskin). I plan to do some variants. e.g. with civilian trousers, caps... I will add dirt, patches etc so they have a rather rag-tag/battleworn look. But bear with me - I'm no experienced texturer at all.

On the right is one of Vila's soldiers with cap. Just to show that there are some regulars without helmets too.

mplali3.th.jpg

From left to right: Repair, Refuel and Ammo versions of the V3S truck.

mplali2.th.jpg

From left to right: Ambulance, HQ and standard versions of the BRDM-2.

mplali4.th.jpg

Left: Vila's DSHK with one of my reskin attempts. Right: another not-so-good-equiped WIP MPLA soldier. This time with cap.

--------------

I'll add three versions of the Mi-8 (or rather: Mi-17 in this case): Unarmed, with Machineguns, Gunship version.

I'm not sure about the Hind... I think the Mi-8 with S-5 missiles is powerful enough to take out everything it might encounter.

Su-25... maybe. But I'm not a fan of air units with guided missiles. Very bad for gameplay IMHO. Perhaps a version with S-8 unguided missiles or bombs. I still hope that an extremely bored modeller does a Su-7 BKL (a man may dream :) )...

Cheers,

D.

I've released the new version 1.1 today.

Changelog and download link are in the OP.

Here is a little video showing some not-so-regular MPLA soldiers in a fight (using their recently added SKS and PPS-43):

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUlGDtb0mLM&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUlGDtb0mLM&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

And some pics:

The MPLA airforce. I've only repainted the Chedaki roundel, proper camo will follow when an African map is available (Isla Duala?):

mplaa3.th.jpg

Some of the not-so-regulars. My first skins in 4 years... not perfect but not too bad. Armed with PPS-43 and SKS.

mplaa2.th.jpg

Some more of them. Leader and AKM soldier.

mplaa1.th.jpg

Have fun - and now back to my WIP African Warfare gametype...

Thanks for the mirrors - OP updated :)

Here is another video, showing the little script I added to my custom V3S fuel truck:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7aK4IVpVQw&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7aK4IVpVQw&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

I had to accelerate the first part to keep the video short enough for the 30s limit. You can see how the fire spreads from barrel to barrel until the truck finally blows up. You can't put out the fire, so this script turns the fuel trucks into very vulnerable vehicles - but it's so much fun in-game! :)

Dima, for 70-s Africa SU-25 will be not real. Out of sence to make it.

Yeah, I know. But it looks like I *might* get a MiG-21. I would have prefered Mig-19 or Su-7, but the 21 would be good enough.

There's also good MIG-15 for Arma I. I think you can use it with author's permition

I know. But it's author isn't very cooperative. I have a working port of the plane, but he won't allow me to release it for ArmA2.

That's really sad. The MiG-15 bis is of top quality.

EDIT:

Well, I could still write a config that inherits from the MiG 15 ArmA1 version... actually, that's no bad idea :)

This is look great.

Just a suggestion but why dont you work with IceBreakr and his Isla Duala map and release all of the addons together as an African mod, similar to Tonal? Package it with some missions/mini campaign maybe some re-tex armour, technicals and the rest. I can help with missions... What you think?

@Nazul : of course it will be nice .... but not so nice for an other guy building an African map for months.

@Old Bear:

Interesting... Have you previewed that island somewhere (I guess it's an ADO map you are talking about)?

@Nazul:

I'd prefer stand alone packages too, but thats for Icebreakr to decide.

As for cooperation: AFAIK his Molatian army is a modern day army with some old equipment, while my package deals with the 70's. So that limits the possibilities a bit. But I'm in contact with him from time to time. It's not exactly a cooperation (yet?), but who knows what the future might bring.

As for missions: Looking forward to them! :)

Thanks to Ingeneer, I remembered that there are legal ways of getting ArmA1 stuff into ArmA2 even when the original author does not give permission to release a direct port...

You can review the results here (click to enlarge):

A proud MPLA pilot with his new, old baby :D

mig15arma2.th.jpg

This nice MiG-15bis by Bdfy & Volksturm will make it into the next version of DIH Africa.

I'm not allowed to change the roundel, but I think the MPLA won't mind flying around with a red star :)

I'll release my solution for stock ArmA 2 insurgents too.

D.

EDIT: I discovered a small bug with the voices. I forgot to define them for my custom identity type, that's why at the moment all have the same voice. This has been fixed in my WIP version already and will be included in v1.2.

That sucks that they won't allow you to change the roundel. You would think that the addon makers would WANT their addon to be used in a great mod pack like the one you guys are making. There are not exactly any 1960's or 70's era Russian addon packs to use their Mig-15.

I took that MiG for a spin in ArmA 2 and thought it a very nice add-on that I'd probably never find a setting for but this is a near-perfect application. Red star doesn't matter at all, it has been rushed into service.

Well, it would fit into Project '85 very well. But I don't think they would allow Vilas to do that.

Red star doesn't matter at all, it has been rushed into service.

Maybe the Soviet 'advisors' of the MPLA had no time to paint a new roundel yet :)

I'm working on African Civilians right now. After all, my forces need someone to fight for!
