Daweedxxx 10 Posted October 26, 2009 Why does Chernorus not have a single river flowing through it? I mean its in a region full of mountains and forests, even some lakes.... yet there are no rivers! Is it too tough to create them? To me it would seem it would be as easy as creating a lake or the sea that surrounds Cherno. If BIS was going for so much realism in the first place, they should have made terrain as realistic as possible. I think they forgot or just got lazy when it came to making at least one major river in the map.
rellikki 7 Posted October 26, 2009 I agree that rivers would have been welcome. Rivers open many possibilities in missions, but Chernarus is based on a real location in Czech republic, so you can't really say "they should have made terrain as realistic as possible". tcp 10 Posted October 26, 2009 Wait, what's the source for the dams? Is that all runoff?
maturin 12 Posted October 26, 2009 You can see pretty clearly where rivers were removed. Yes, flowing water in areas of steep elevation is a pain in the ass to render digitally. You'd be hard pressed to find many examples of it. Usually if they need a river in a large gameworld, they just make it an inlet of the ocean, at sea level. But this wasn't an option in Chernarus, or everything would be a 200 meter canyon.

maturin 12 Posted October 26, 2009 Type 'Ceske Stredohori' into google earth. If you trace the course of the River Elbe you can easily identify the gameworld, as well as many of the major settlements.

vasmkd 12 Posted October 26, 2009 I'm happy with it the way it is except i would of liked to see larger dams/lakes
CarlGustaffa 4 Posted October 26, 2009 Rivers tend to require brigdes. We know how "well" AI performs with these.

icewindo 29 Posted October 26, 2009 Rivers are possible, although they would have at the same height as one would have to use the "pond" objects BIS provided. You can't use rivers as sea level as you would have rise and tide effects and that's not really logical for a river. The single river objects will have to be hand-placed, I guess a 3d island editor like Mapfacts one for ArmA1 will help with that. I placed all water objects for my castle in Visitor and while the "river" had a solid layout it still was pretty time-consuming work connecting all the parts so none was at the wrong height or there were "holes". Also, the speed of the water travelling would have to be ajusted as at the current state it suits more to a small stream.
spirit6 51 Posted October 26, 2009 Not even mentioning the great desire for the ai to swim. Only sea they see as water, the ponds they just see as holes in the ground. Woot and somebody beats me posting something while i type. Nice pic up there mate and yes its crapload of work is it.
Commando84 0 Posted October 26, 2009 rivers would be cool but its a pain in the ass to make things work but graphically I guess and the A.i's :D

W0lle 1052 Posted October 26, 2009 I think they forgot or just got lazy when it came to making at least one major river in the map. They neither forgot them nor where too lazy to make them as you thought, but thanks for trolling. I'm pretty sure that one of the devs long time ago explained here why they decided not to use rivers. The AI and their "ability" to use bridges was one of them.
Alex72 1 Posted October 26, 2009 Im really missing bridges in Cherna. All those glory times in ArmA1 and blowing bridges to keep ground vehicles from coming in quick. Its a tactical thing, and its really sad its missing. OA probably wont sport any either unless there is a river running through that valley weve seen. Hope it is a river there though - and brigdes. :) EDIT: With the "core engine changes" we heard about for OA. Might mean the VBS stuff though ofcourse. Well see. jeffroland 10 Posted October 27, 2009 Rivers tend to require brigdes. We know how "well" AI performs with these. My thoughts exactly. The AI cannot handle bridges. Don't even attempt to take your squad across the road that is on that large damn in the north. Your squad mates will decide that it's easier to swim across the reservoir and they will unload their equipment in the process.
