Janat 10 Posted July 10, 2010 (edited) Intel i7 920 @ 3.6GHz (with throttling and hyperthreading on) 6GB DDR3 RAM GeForce GTX 275, overclocked a bit Intel X-25M SSD drive Windows 7 Professional 64bit Distance view: 4000 m Texture detail: normal Video memory: normal AA: disabled AF: normal Terrain detail: high Object detail: normal Shadows: normal Postprocess effects: disabled Resolution: 1920x1080 I get 15 to 40 fps, avg around 20 (in Chernarussia). Playable, but I think my system should do better. How can I improve my system performance? EDIT: Zargabad fps is 10 to 30. Niku 10 Posted July 10, 2010 (edited) I'm new to the game and not sure how to maximize the performance. When I play or even at the main menu, the game seems like it lags, it stops and goes, as if you were playing online and there was lag. Also sometimes the sound becomes crazy as if the speakers are broken or damaged. Its hard to describe the exact sound but it looks like clicks of a damaged speaker. My question is how should I set these to maximize/smooth the performance? Distance view: ? Texture detail: ? Video memory: ? AA: ? AF: ? Terrain detail: ? Object detail: ? Shadows: ? Postprocess effects: ? Resolution: ? These are my specs: i5-650 core @ 3.20 Ghz HD Radeon 5770 1TB Serial 2 Hard Drive @ 7200 rpm 8GB DRRAM Windows 7 64bit Sorry if this question has been repeated many times or solved many times. I'm new to this game/community and needed the help to further enjoy this great game. Thank you for your help and patience! alexc 10 Posted July 10, 2010 every couple minutes my game drops to 2-5 FPS for a bit until I go into the menu and change ANY video setting. Any thoughts?Specs: i have similar problems with Arma 2 since the 1.07 patch before (on 1.05)it ran smooth, but since the patch frame rate drops every few minutes or so and then picks up again for a few minute before dropping again. Tweaking graphics settings does not help or bring any change. there is an other thread post about this problem http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=102500 your not the only one having this problem and I wonder how many others are affected by this annoying problem .. I hope bis is doing something to solve this in the next patch ......
-TwK-Danny 0 Posted July 10, 2010 (edited) My question is how should I set these to maximize/smooth the performance? Sounds like you suffer from frame-skipping. Try the following settings Distance view: 1600 Texture detail: Very High Video memory: Very High AA: Disabled AF: Very High Terrain detail: Normal Object detail: Normal Shadows: Very high Postprocess effects: Normal Resolution: Your monitors native Now go to C:\Users\***name***\Documents\ArmA 2 and open arma.cfg Change the following settings to make them look like this; GPU_MaxFramesAhead=1; GPU_DetectedFramesAhead=1; With your system, these settings should run pretty well. If you want to increase graphics futher, you should try enabling AA (low or medium) and try to increase Distance view. Terrain Detail and Object Detail can cause stuttering when looking around, so keep them at normal. Make sure you are using Catalyst 10.6 aswell. http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx Edited July 10, 2010 by [TwK]Danny
Wolfstriked 11 Posted July 10, 2010 (edited) Wow,is it possible that its not Arma engine but the video card drivers fault for the stuttering on Nvidia cards?I just installed older version driver and Takistan is now stutter free. The newest 257.21 drivers stutter alot while the oldest driver from Nvidia website works best for me.Nvidia really needs to get on the ball with Arma2.How do we go about getting them to focus more on it is the question. Which driver are you referring to? 197.55 or whatever? I've been thinking about rolling back because I've been getting constant instances of the drivers crashing with ArmA2/OA. Though oddly enough I never had a problem with this with the 257.21 drivers and ArmA2 prior to 1.07.
Wolfstriked 11 Posted July 11, 2010 257.15 was really bad.197.75 and 197.41 were better stutter wise. Its better but still not perfect.Towns drop and stutter but not like 257.21 was doing for me.I notice your on Win7...they have a new beta that you should also try.WinXP64 does not get betas so I will have to wait for final release. Kymatica 10 Posted July 12, 2010 Hey all, I'm having a few issues getting a decent frame rate. I get a maximum of 40FPS. That is on Very Low. Very High gets me 25-30FPS. I overclocked my i7 920 from 2.67GHz to 3.4GHz which barely made a difference. My specs are: Intel Core i7 920 @ 3.4GHz ATi HIS HD5870 6GB DDR3 @ 1600MHz Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit. A friend with near identical specs (4870 instead of 5870) runs at a constant 50 FPS. Any insight or fixes for this? Thanks in advance.
Janat 10 Posted July 12, 2010 (edited) Kymatica make sure you haven't overclocked your graphics card and disable hyperthreading in BIOS. Doing these two things made me go from 20 fps to 40fps, also I could set textures to very high, AF to very high, AA off, terrain high, objects normal, shadows high, post processing low (I hate depth of field effect) and view distance 5000. I have a GTX 275 so you should be able to run better settings. Edited July 12, 2010 by Janat
Kymatica 10 Posted July 13, 2010 Janat, Thanks for your reply. My GPU is at stock frequencies. I have only over clocked my CPU (for testing with ARMA) I have discovered that everything set to "Very High", except Post Processing which is disabled (personal preference) on Multiplayer gives me a steady 55-60 FPS with a 3000km distance. I am putting the terrible frame rate in Campaign to unoptimized coding. Maybe due to the amount of AI that is being loaded.

Amazed 0 Posted July 15, 2010 As of now I am really confused what I actually can expect perfomance-wise on my rig with OA and what settings I should use. Kymatica 10 Posted July 16, 2010 Amazed, You should be fine on "Very High" on everything. Your campaign will most likely drop to low FPS (20-40) on any setting anyway. (refer to my above posts) Multiplayer you will max out at the cap limit of 60.

ArmedBoy 10 Posted July 18, 2010 (edited) Hi guys Right now i'm using nvidia drivers 197.45 with GTX275 on arma 2 v1.07. Anyone know if there are better drivers? Can i update to the leatest or roll back to some older? I heard the latest 257.21 really sucks with arma 2? Edited July 18, 2010 by ArmedBoy
Kymatica 10 Posted July 19, 2010 View distance really only matters while flying. I usually set mine to about 3000. Most online servers have a default value anyway, which you can override (middle mouse, view status, settings). It's usually around 1500-2400.

ast65 10 Posted July 24, 2010 Update your system (graphics, sound and DirectX), use latest beta patch and "cpucount=2" command.
Raenir 10 Posted July 25, 2010 How do I use the command line? Or is this in the config somewhere?
ast65 10 Posted July 25, 2010 Right- click your shortcut, than go to properties and add " -cpucount=2" in target line (without quotes and don´t forget the space before -cp...)
Wolfstriked 11 Posted July 25, 2010 I get the extreme jerkiness once in awhile. It seems it happens when I leave OA running while I go away from PC.When I come back its there and the only way to fix is to reboot as restarting the game itself does nothing.
