galzohar 31 Posted August 18, 2009 Definitely the closets PC gaming has ever been to real life combat, even though it still has a long way to go to even feel like it. That is, RL tactics in Arma 2 are more effective than they are in any other game, which in the end is sort of the ultimate test. If we get to the point where RL tactics are the best tactics to use, even though they're not directly enforced, then the game had reached the ultimate realism level (even though it might reach it without even being fully realistic, for me that would be well beyond "good enough"). Right now, when you go through a town (in a mission where you don't know all AI positions in advance and don't have respawns/revive scripts, which unfortunately isn't common but is very possible), it IS best to move RL-like: Always having someone watch the street when someone else crosses, always making sure all directions are covered, clearing methodically rather than pushing into the middle of the enemy, etc. If you also play on expert, communication and navigation (even if you have a GPS!) suddenly become important, and the loadouts you pick gain extra 2 levels of realism compared to what you would have picked on crosshair-enabled difficulties (at least in missions that include walking through towns). So again, this game has a long way to go, both from the BIS side as well as from the mission makers' side, but it is definitely by far the best one out there for combat simulation. shataan 1 Posted August 18, 2009 All the game has to do is suspend my disbelief. And immerse me. ARMA does this for me better than FP or ARMA 1. Now, I just need to bugs fixed. lol I don`t need total actual realism. I just need virtual realism.

Apocal 10 Posted August 19, 2009 It's clearly a game, but it does show many tactical realities.

Master gamawa 0 Posted August 19, 2009 Some of you guys don't even get the question. Are you serious? Of course it's not real life! Bullets don't fly out your screen and kill you when playing Arma. It's still intense and the tactics used in game as well as the choices you have in battle are pretty accurate. It's closer to real war than other war games like CoD or Medal of Honor and that's enough.

Big Dawg KS 6 Posted August 19, 2009 VBS2 is realistic as ArmA 2... :icon_rolleyes: Yes even expensive software is not realistic at all. VBS2 is more feature complete than ArmA 2.
LJF 0 Posted August 20, 2009 Sigh ... I really doubt he was meaning for us to take him literally. It isn't "is A2 better than RL", he's asking how accurately it simulates RL. Like has been said, yes of course it's not as real as RL but that's so obvious I'm really quite surprised it's been mentioned so much. Imo the infantry aspect is pretty good, the vehicles though ... no. No flares and hitpoints on the armour/cars/aircraft. This is from someone who's combat experience amounts to some paint ball but from what I can tell it's the closest you're going to get. PvP with patient people and ACEMOD changes everything as has also been said. As far as I'm concerned it's pretty damned good though, add flares, a system to simulate the penetration of armour, real FLIR, FCS, dynamic vehicle positions (the ability to walk around inside of a transport for example - though this is more immersion tbh) and a better system for missile targeting and it would be brilliant. Hmm, that's a fair few things actually ... at the moment it does infantry pretty well though.
no use for a name 0 Posted August 20, 2009 I think it's the only game that best simulates infantry combat; but it still has a long way to go
vasmkd 12 Posted August 20, 2009 the game is just fun and it don't feel that real. The adrenalin comes from beating the game and reaching achievements. There can be a touch of realism but that depends what the individuals emotional state when he is playing. No pc game can simulate a real vehicle or weapon The day a game loses it's fun side is when it gets very realistic
