Ideas for "Behind Enemy Lines" mission.

Recommended Posts

Now that I've sort of achieved my Downed Chopper Pilot Mission (http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=78575), I have another idea for a mission. I'm thinking something along the lines of that SAS team back in the first Gulf War (Bravo Two Zero). Where these SAS guys were stuck in Iraq and had to make their way to Syria to be safe.

Basically you and your fireteam a trapped in enemy territory (this being the entire landmass of Chenarus) and you've got to fight your way across the border where it is safe.

Along the way, you'll be facing roving enemy patrols and not so friendly civilians. You'd start out in one far end of the country(maybe somewhere down south), and getting to the the "safe zone"(maybe waay up north) would be what wins the mission. You and you're team would run out of the ammo you start with and are going to have to start scrounging for weapons and ammo from hostile forces or any supply truck/vehicle you come across. Most of the time you would have to sneak your way past enemy patrols and random civilians. Maybe the mission would have to be timed, like for a 24 hour period or something.

So, I'd just like to hear both technical and gameplay suggestions or ideas for this.

Hello, Bfs Trooper.

This Idea sounds great, I'm not a great editor but I have tried making this type of mission and I epically Failed :P.

The Movie was GREAT, one of the best imo. It would be nice if you made it just like the movie I would give you two thumbs up :).

Add parts like the plane getting shot down (or chopper w/e you are doing). Running from the enemies/falling into the body pit. The part where he meets up with the Civilians, and hops in the back of the truck, and heads to that "war town" (forgot the name of it). That would be the best part of the mission! and the ending scene of course :)...choppers flying in shooting down bad guys, nothing better :).

Those are just some of my ideas on what you should put in the mission, imo that would make it the best mission I have ever played :).

Bravo 2-0 looks like a quite fun thing to get inspiration from. A few local vehicles with too little fuel to reach any gas station would be pretty fun as well, giving a moment's increased mobility at the cost of making people pissed off. Maybe some script to halt vehicles and force people to leave them (like the taxi in the movie). The fuel level in the vehicle can easily be adjusted for when a person enters it. :)

skipTime and publicVariable will be your friends I think, so that you can make the time go faster and give a more feelable day/night cycle for the escape.

Nice idea, it really can work imo, I tried something similar back in ofp (well, it was just some patrols and a dude with 10 rounds :D) and it worked quite well. Would you try for a slow and careful style mission or a more casual approach?

Definately slow. Not something that can be achieved in one sitting. Everything should take place in realtime. I'm hoping this would be possible as a COOP mission since COOP games get autosaved everytime you suspend it. First I'd like to know how I could create random roving enemy patrols without having to place them manually in the map. If that is at all possible. I'm still a noob in map editing you see :D

Also, what are the effects of civilians if they are friendly towards REDFOR but your guys are BLUFOR? Would they attack the player?

Those are some great ideas indeed. Not sure how to go about hitching a ride from civilians. Especially since I intend the civilians to be a bit more hostile. This going to be more "Bravo Two Zero" and less "Behind Enemy Lines" actually. Except the whole focus will be that of an American spec ops team traped in a really hostile country where the people are fearful of foreigners and foreign troops. So civilians would less likely give you a ride and more than likely alert the local authorities about you.

Too bad there aren't any american islands made yet. It would make a perfect setting with those prerequisites if you play Opfor instead ;)

Heh, well if we had desert maps, then Taliban territory would be perfect for both sides actually.

I just want to show you a little script, wich you could use in your mission. I think it fits very well. It's a script from Mr Murrays Editing Guide, so it's not my work.

Anyways, the "hunter.sqs" will make the AI chasing you. The script only ends, if you or the enemy is dead and it works quite well - i use it in my own missions as well.;)

Here it is:

_hunter = _this select 0
_target = _this select 1
_hunter setBehaviour "AWARE"
_hunter setCombatMode "RED"
_hunter setSpeedMode "Full"
_hunter doTarget _target
#Loop
?_target distance _hunter >= 10 : {_x doMove getPos _target} foreach units _hunter
~4
? (count units _hunter) <= 1 : exit
?(!(alive _target)) : exit
goto "Loop"

I hope you can use it. :D

Nice! This could work for a lone sniper type dude whoses sole purpose is to hunt you down and kill you. Just like that bad guy in Behind Enemy Lines! :D

The only problem I foresee it that all AI have the eyes of a hawk and can shoot a gnat in the ass at 300 yards.

Sneaking past them might be a little difficult.

@ BF Trooper.

Sounds like an awesome mission. I love the movie Bravo 2-0, but there is also a 1 hour documentary that is actually narrated by Andy McNab (one of the SAS guys in B2-0) about the mission. Some things were changed slightly for the movie.

Finally there are several video's about weapons and such featuring Andy McNab that could be used as source material, sound files and such.

Anyways, I'll be looking for this mission on the horizon good luck. :)

BTW here is Andy on you tube

An idea I would like to see (as I can't make it myself) is the Entebbe mission by the IDF. Terrorists hijacked an airline and landed in Uganda and kept the hostages in the airport terminal. The IDF commandoes landed cargo planes on a far runway and came out in mercedes disguised to look like government cars. They then got out and stormed the building taking fire from the terminal and from the control tower before rescuing the hostages and taking them away on the planes they came in on.

So the mission structure would be a C130 with a vehicle in it as well as troops lands at the airfield. The troops drive across the airfield to the terminal where the main battle will be and then have to load the vehicles with the hostage and then make it back to the plane. Being able to start in the vehicle while in the plane and having the ramp lower and driving out would be cool but I don't know if it can be done. It was also done during the early hours of the morning without NVG's so it would be pretty spectacular having the runway lights and tracers flashing every where.

best way to do it...

do it like that and I will be your fan :p

seriously tho, i am making together with Ktotte an ai that have "invaded" an island/world and could be used as opfor.. maybe a bit heavy on cpu for this type of mission but could be used if you want a lot of activity from the enemy that is smart.

Not at night. If they ain't got NV, they just flounder around in the dark. Made a nice BELs Spetsnaz mission at night. Sneaking across farmland, dodging patrols of armed locals, etc. I love it when you see headlights coming and don't know if its civi or not. Of course I hide anyway, but you never know if you've been spotted and they've radioed a motorized patrol set on a "GUARD" waypoint. Man I love Arma... A good way to make locals who will tattle on you but not engage or fight is to use the "armed civilians", put "removeallweapons this" in the init, and set behavior to safe, never fire. Blend them in with normal civis.

I want to make a really big one, whole map, and play it thru several different sessions, using the savegame feature.

Hey 'Trooper, let us know...
