How do YOU play ARMA2 ?

I hate having to command the retarded AI.

I like them. Watching them fail and then outsmarting them makes me feel superior. There are always two sides to every coin

I play the Armory on Utes most of the time. By now reached >10000 points and have enabled ~75% of the accessible equipment. Makes you versatile in different roles and familiarizes you with a lot of the equipment.

Played the training and two Single Player missions, haven't actually started the campaign yet - putting together a new PC to get up to that task.

Play? One of these days I plan to get some actual play time in... until then it's all playtesting my missions (which really gets tedious after a while).

MP, coop, with AI (I like to micro-manage). Currently playing a version of Domination that I tweeked a bit.

We've got A-10's for close air support (gotta LOVE the TrackIR5!) so I spend most of my game time in orbit.

As i got A2 i immediately started the campaign and played it until several issues made it impossible to complete without cheating. Else, i spent the last couple of weeks playing with the editor and testing addons.

For me, OFP/ArmA excells in portraying a combat environment from the perspective of an infantry soldier. Vehicles and AC do have their place ingame, but i prefer to observe them from outside as supporting assets, or for transportation means. Still hoping for an improvement in vehicle physics, damage calculation and an FCS/ballistics port.

As for my buddies and myself. 95% of our game time is played in coop. mainly with a modified version of Domination. We are only a few of us that prefer to fight bots rather than fight against other human opponents. played the campaign a couple of times with the guys but keep getting out of sync problems and not having the mission advancing.

Love the game though. Been playing it ever since we got our copies. =)

I like to play with the armory and also I want to play through and complete the campaign which I really enjoy! I am quite far now.

When I have done all that, I will venture online and hopefully I will be a better player by then.

I'm either messing with the editor finding awesome spots and ideas for missions that I will get 45% done with and then loose interest in or playing the campaign treating every situation as realistically as possible.

What I can deduce from this then - the vast majority of ARMA2 players are not particularly taken with epic battles and tank / aerial warfare and like the 'meat' of the game..infantry combat.

Seems to be that way. Funny really all that you can have, but its always best to go back to basics in the end. I have the same, I found I never realy can be bothered playing tanks, not even in Arma1. Flying is ok but I rarely use them to fly myself. I really like to play arma pretty much as the campaign in arma 2 portrays, a small SF unit with objectives.

I played Ghost Recon and that was the best back in the day and again was small unit control with SF missions and objectives and ive never realy found anything better to play in that way. I never get real satisfaction from being in a massive battle and as some put it "a small cog in a wheel" .. its seems too distant a feel to it.

For me its infantry on the ground, being commander, with high command an no more than 3 fireteams max, using voice activation, nice slow gameplay, using best of tactics and planning as possible = total satisfaction.

Perhaps this is defining a point of human nature. We all gain satisfaction from 'up close and personal' warfare, shooting a tank I feel indifferent. A hellfire from a heli at dots on the ground - just doesnt do it for me. Popping up out of cover and seeing the results of your actions hits the mark - pardon the pun.

Dont get me wrong, I hate war - but the instincts in all of us too kill - at least in males, need to be sated somehow, even if it is in a trivial 'game'.

it's interesting to discuss philosophical questions based on a video game. I remember a game where I occupied a cannon and fired at some far away targets without getting any satisfaction from it. So I guess you're right.

But my personal reason for preferring the infantry role in ArmA is quite trivial:

The anti tank and anti aircraft weapons are better than my ability as a driver/pilot to dodge them - this makes my outings short and unpleasant. As a foot soldier I can survive better.

I used to play with the 3ID in the a Saber group (Tankers). We helped bust down the door for assaults, or breakouts in defensive situations. We of course supported the infantry to the point of becoming moving cover, if the Pumas (Mech infantry) were crossing or cornering in urban areas, we were often at their backs blocking at least one vector of attack. In difficult contacts, we'd sprint to flank and hammer the opposing forces. Often we'd simply be the anchor point in a movement so the infantry could retreat if necessary under covering fire. They screened AT from us, and we squashed the big bugs for them. Worked well. The Talons (Air Wing) were a dedicated bunch that would ferry troops, CAS, & CAP with practiced excellence. Overall, Infantry is the cat's meow, but get some people knowing the position roles in the tank (or any vehicle), and it's a very rewarding experience.

I agree with the guy who said making missions is a lot like being a dungeon master in D&D. I make simple missions in 10 minutes for my brother and me, and we just spend hours messing around. What a fantastic game, worth every penny.

Also - I like flying choppers. One of my favorite parts of the game. The huey is just so much fun, especially when carrying real people around.
