Digital Download can be burned to DVD?

Recommended Posts

I am wondering if it can be done, download and burn it to a DVD for later reinstallment. Of course most likely not. I am just worried that if I purchased ArmA2 in digital download form, what if I run into problems later, or if I have to reinstall. Will i be provided a purchase code that I can hold onto for dear life in the future in case a terrorist drops an E bomb near me? Can anyone shed some light on this? ArmA2 is available tomorrow in the US, so far that is what I have heard. Maybe I should just purchase the DVD and wait for it to arrive. hmmm

if you mean download from a shop that you pay for, i cant see why backing up those files would be a problem.

if you mean downloading a torrent of the game, then no.

I know that Steam has a game backup function, even though I never used it.

LOL, not from a Torrent but from an online shop yes. I notice with Steam there is a file called common where the games are at, i assume I can back up those files but I didnt see an installment executable in there unless I am not looking right.

thanks

When I got ArmA1 from online (Sprocket I think) it was an exe. So I just saved it to an external HD. You are given a code. I saved to a txt file with the exe for future reference.

If it's on your HD, it can be on a CD/DVD. Just need a code to install it (for Securom).

My 505 download version from nexway looks like -

ArmedAssault2_edsr_efis.exe

ArmedAssault2_edsr_efis-1.bin

through to

ArmedAssault2_edsr_efis-11.bin

So theres 12 files at roughly 7.5gigs. just split over 2 dvds. no problemo at all.

My D2D copy was a directory and looked exactly like the contents of what the hard DVD copy would be. I'm sure I could put it on DVD and install from there all I wanted.

If you purchase from steam, I'm not sure about their backup feature as I never used it, but the following generally works:

- Copy game files from the game folder in the steamapps folder to a safe place.

- When reinstalling, reinstall steam, start redownloading the game, and once the download starts close steam.

- Copy backed up game folder back into where it should be.

- Run steam again.

- Let it download updates if necessary and play.

Yes you can burn it to a Dual Layer DVD from the Direct2Drive download file. Infact it should run just like popping the DVD game in as long as auto run is enabled.

Just install steam (have that on your back-up CD as well), run it so it updates, then copy over the game files into whatever folder you've made. Done it several times between hard drives (70+gb). No need to trick Steam - they'll just turn up as ready when you open it next.

The GamersGate version is downloaded to your disk, so if you want it over to DVD, its just to burn all the files from the "GamersGate temporary files" folder.

The Direct2Drive version can be burned to a DVD and then reinstalled later on with your activation code. All you need to do is zip/rar it to 4.5 GB volumes and then you can use normal DVDs.

I purchased ArmA2 from Germany petergames.de, once I had all the files downloaded I burned them to two separate DVD's, so when ever I want to reinstall the game just pop the DVD in, extract the files to a folder, run the EXE.

Just remember, digital downloads can only be installed 5 times. So you're better of just buying the DVD.
