Doolittle 0 Posted November 12, 2008 In latest ArmA2 video I see the civilians are walking down the middle of the road and standing around in the middle. Please make them do their pathing down the edge of the road or something, or expect them to get run over a lot. How about this: if (me == class(man) && me path on road) then { adjust right to my pos 10 m } Sorry if this is a repost !! I have not been reading this board and am an ignoramus. Maddmatt 1 Posted November 12, 2008 Agreed. It should go for all people. The road is for vehicles. If I did that in real life I would get arrested or killed. I made a much longer post about this but it's buried in a thread somewhere. Edit: Here is that post I mentioned... The AI soldiers' strange attraction to the middle of the road is IMO a huge flaw. Civilians do it too. It makes no sense to me, the road is for vehicles, not people. I would get arrested or killed if I did that in real life! I was hoping for it to be addressed in a patch I remember a mission with a huge group of enemy infantry attacking a town, they all ran in one long line down the middle of the road. It looked ridiculous It doesn't usually seem to happen so badly, but when it does it just looks terrible. Sometimes in urban combat they seem to forget about everything else, go to the centre of a road, and just run along it like a retard I think AI men should be programmed to avoid the road unless crossing it. They should use pavements though, or walk along the side of the road when not in combat. In combat they should stick to buildings and cover, the road is a dangerous place in combat. wipman 1 Posted November 12, 2008 Hi, may be it would be possible to make booth military and civilian AI's to use the sidewalks when they're in Safe and Aware behaviours; and then make 'em get/look for cover if they're in Combat and Stealth behaviour. The problem will be (i guess) to make 'em use the propper side of the road ever that they be driving a vehicle but make 'em avoid the center of the roads, yes. Let's C ya
Doolittle 0 Posted November 12, 2008 Thanks Maddmatt... I knew someone would have mentioned it before. I was just surprised to see it in latest ArmA2 video and it spooked me. Even this picture here: 4-gamestar.hu_pressday_5.jpg you see two old guys standing in the road. I understand it's a pathing issue.. that on the map they draw all these lines around the island and the AI won't be able to distinguish between a "road" path and some other path.. it's unfortunate. Still buying it when it comes out!

Still buying it when it comes out! She looks like she is crossing the road to me. Not to mention did you notice the one behind her? The one not standing on the road? The only thing that bothers me area the 3 other people just standing on the road and looking down it not even walking.

Maddmatt 1 Posted November 13, 2008 I thought there new system doesn't utilize those paths anymore? It should be as simple as taking the texture and saying no no ai, get off the F****** road! I think the problem is that vehicles need to use the road. So for that it needs to marked as AI pathway. The AI paths don't distinguish between AI in vehicles and on foot. AI only use pathways when on an 'object' such as a road, building, or bridge as far as I know (in ArmA/OFP, don't know about ArmA 2). If the road pathway could somehow be marked 'vehicles only' we would have some improvement. Even better would be seperate pathways for AI on foot and in vehicles. Then AI on foot could use pavements or follow the roadside when safe while vehicles would use the road.
.kju 3245 Posted November 13, 2008 OMG civilians dare to step on roads A pictures doesn't really show the motion.
Taurus 20 Posted November 13, 2008 Whilst we're at it, why not make drivers drive on one side of the road if two lanes are available? Now they drive in the middle, which makes them collide or one of them swirl off the road.
zinc 0 Posted November 13, 2008 I'd like to see civs with purpose, instead of the zombiefied 'road wanderers' like the current ones. I'd also like to see some terror/fear/shock in those faces and a little posturing, like folded arms, heads down, crying etc. Dusty/dirty/ragged clothes? These are farming people living and working out in the countryside, within a war zone. With those completely expressionless faces, they look like they're out shopping at the local mall. Please remove them from the road, otherwise they'll completely cock up the AI's pathfinding abilities, cause major traffic jams, delays, vehicle crashes and probably just get squashed in the process. Pavements are for pedestrians, roads are for vehicles. If you want them to cross the road, create a proper black and white crossing where the traffic will stop. Ah well.. let's see what BIS decides. I thought that was already in the pipeline? It is, from the OFP era (was in Resistance for sure) - once the AI vehicle sees another one coming from the other side it sticks to the right. CameronMcDonald 146 Posted November 13, 2008 I think they specifically mentioned that AI would be driving correctly this time, rather than hogging the centre lane and only changing sides when they see another vehicle.
mr.g-c 6 Posted November 13, 2008 I think they specifically mentioned that AI would be driving correctly this time, rather than hogging the centre lane and only changing sides when they see another vehicle. Doolittle 0 Posted November 13, 2008 Jakerod, heh you're right! Of the 7 figures (1 behind lady) shown in the foreground of that picture 4 (2 behind blue sign) are standing in the road and 1 is walking into the road. Â And the lady's eyes are closed. I'd say a lot of the civys are suicidal or something! Why are they so depressed? Unless everyone's blind? Maybe that's what's happening?? Make a script where if (in road) then {laydown}
NoRailgunner 0 Posted November 13, 2008 Imho they were talking about this at GC08 and if my memories right they found a solution that civs move more on the left+right side of roads+streets. Please, dont hang me for this if its not working all time.

twisted 128 Posted November 14, 2008 i hope BIS makes this kind of aspect moddable much more than in Arma1. after all if the micro-ai lets them know where they are within less than a meter - that opens big possibilities. and walking on the edge of the road would be a first smart step. Doolittle 0 Posted November 14, 2008 I just thought of an easy solution too.... make a "hidden" formation that is a line to the right and have walking civs use it. This way you don't need to add extra pathing.
