Stewy 1 Posted June 23, 2008 G'day guys, The lag in 1.14 has annoyed me enough (I even got back into Flight Sim 2004! I've decided I'm going back to 1.08! Just curious though fellas, I've never done an ArmA uninstall before - do I need to back up my addons folder - or is it kept as part of the uninstall? I probably need to back up all of my addons to CD anyway, so no biggie... Are there any other things that I need to be mindful off when doing an uninstall? Thanks for your help. HotShot 0 Posted June 23, 2008 Backup Profile/Config settings? I can't remember but I think those went when I had to reinstall AA.
luemmel 20 Posted June 23, 2008 delete your arma.profile file. restart your game and you will gain performance never seen before.
l mandrake 9 Posted June 24, 2008 also try switching postprocess effects to low - makes image sharper and increases framerate drastically.
[asa]oden 0 Posted June 24, 2008 .. and put shadows on max. - made wonders for me. But OT, backup all addons folders and the user folder (as basically prev. stated). Is it general lag that annoys you or is it when people JIP?

dale0404 5 Posted June 24, 2008 So your saying that you had an increase in FPS with shadows on max? WOW! Will try this at lunchtime!
Stewy 1 Posted June 24, 2008 ODEN @ June 24 2008,18:52)]Is it general lag that annoys you or is it when people JIP? Hi mate, Not sure what you mean by jip, but I get serious lag whenever I look left or right (new scenery or characters lag it out) and also when I look closely into the rifle sights (right mouse button) that transition is lag-city! Never happened in 1.08 - was as smooth as a button...
whisper 0 Posted June 24, 2008 tried adding -vm108 in your shortcut ?
Inkompetent 0 Posted June 24, 2008 tried adding -vm108 in your shortcut ? I think this command is disabled in 1.14, so it won't help a bit.
vilas 478 Posted June 24, 2008 hehe, in my case 1.14 has sometimes missing textures, loosing LODs of models too and workes worse than 1.08 but when i installed newest drivers it helped a little, i haven't tested "few hours of gameplay" (cause i am only testing addons ) but i observed behaviours like from 1.05 (brown models without textures) shame that BIS makes patches broking this, what was fixed in patch before
mr burns 133 Posted June 24, 2008 tried adding -vm108 in your shortcut ? I think this command is disabled in 1.14, so it won't help a bit. You can try loading the 112beta modfolder (in case you still have it) and use -vm108 on that .. dunno if it works though

Stewy 1 Posted June 24, 2008 THANKS Whisper and Mr Burns! Â -vm108 has fixed 90% of my problems!! Still the odd lag here and there, but ArmA is at least playable again! Thanks! Still going back to 1.08 - but have used 10 CDs to back up by Addons folder and am only half way there! Â At least I can play ArmA in the interim! Thanks again mates Stew
Stewy 1 Posted June 24, 2008 Buy dvds. LOL, yeah, I need to do that - guess I'm showing my age... I remember when 1.44 MB hard disks were cutting edge technology!
whisper 0 Posted June 24, 2008 Wow! How strange is that? Patch notes explicitely state that -vm108 option is not effective anymore, but using it still resolve FPS issues? I'm sorry to ask that, but are you sure it is not some kind of placebo effect (I'm not talking about the BI CM here ) that makes you think it runs now better? Or did you change anything (option change, no shadow, etc...) else besides adding -vm108? If yes, try without the -vm108 in the shortcut to see if it's not the other change that resolved the problem. Or BI thought they had the -vm108 option removed, but some of the change brought by -vm108 has slipped under the radar and has not been disabled. Change which could be looked into by BI to explain some of the FPS issues seen here and there since 1.14 on some configuration

Maybe the workaround i posted, that you ignore so gracefully, has worked a little bit
Stewy 1 Posted June 24, 2008 Nah, Whisper, no placebo here - I toned down the settings from full to normal, but the improvement is so noticeable it's not funny - ArmA was seriously unplayable because of the lag in 1.14, and now with -vm108, plus the addon that reverts back to 1.08 sights (ie, no big zoom when you want to look through the crosshair) and I'm 95% back to normal... Been blasting away on ACE Everon like the good old days (read 1.08 days) and no lag!
dotted 0 Posted June 24, 2008 So your saying that you had an increase in FPS with shadows on max? WOW! Will try this at lunchtime! Â If you have a weak cpu, and a powerful GPU increasing shadow detail will help, as the lower settings causes shadows to be rendered on the CPU
suma 8 Posted June 24, 2008 Been blasting away on ACE Everon like the good old days (read 1.08 days) and no lag! It is hard to come with anything constructive if you really see this with 1.14. The -vm108 option is really no longer present in this version, and you could write other options like -fixAllBugs or -runFast, and any of them might have the same effect. Or perhaps you could wear a green/blue cap while playing ArmA, and it would fix the issue as well? I do not intend to be sarcastic at all, I am used to see all kinds of unexpected behaviours while working with computers, I am just trying to confirm -vm108 is really doing nothing (if you decide not to believe me, some experienced user could confirm it by searching through the executable strings to see the option really no longer exists). Â If you have a weak cpu, and a powerful GPU increasing shadow detail will help, as the lower settings causes shadows to be rendered on the CPU Don't mean to go off topic here but I have a Nvidia 7600 GS GPU and a dual core processor. Tried the max shadow setting and my framerate went down noticeably.
kklownboy 43 Posted June 24, 2008 Well then he was right, your vidcard is slow and your dualcore is good. But shadows at max, aka: "veryhigh" is for really 1gig of vidcard ram. and the "high" setting is good for 512mb cards. But you will still need a fast GPU to use the ram.
