hypno toad 0 Posted December 15, 2007 I don't know about you guys, but ascension island (which happens to be in the "bumfuck middle of the Atlantic") looks strikingly similar to south sahrani. http://img115.imageshack.us/my.php?image=sahrani2lz7.jpg http://img212.imageshack.us/my.php?image=sahranidrypa5.jpg What do you guys think? volkov956 0 Posted December 15, 2007 uhm u sure u aint seeing things? kinda same shape but not the same Geography on the island tho
hypno toad 0 Posted December 15, 2007 Similarities: -Mountains are in the exact same place on both islands. -Location of the geographical areas are almost the same, except that they are mirrored (reversed) -This island is located where it is supposed to be located (in the middle of the Atlantic) -The peninsula where Corozal is located, is also located on the real island. It is almost in the same place, too. -South sahrani is 8 kilometers from one end to the other, ascension island is 11 kilometers from one end to the other. Also, back in the days of OFP, the islands were based off of real places. Quote "Operation Flashpoint's three main islands, Everon, Malden, and Kolgujev, are based on actual existing islands. Everon is the Croatian island of Krk. Malden is the Greek Ionian island Levkas. Kolgujev is based on Tenerife Island, one of the Canary Islands. Another island in the game, Meganissi, the largest island just to the east of Levkas. Nogova is an island introduced in the Resistance expansion pack. While it has no real world analogue, it shares landmark names with Bohemia Interactive's native Czech Republic and several areas appear to be very similar to areas in the game." I don't see why suddenly in ArmA they would just make them up completely. If you can find an island that looks more like south sahrani, then by all means show it to us. croc4 0 Posted December 16, 2007 ok, I'll be the one who posts this. who cares if the island is based on a real location?, how does this change anything?, if its a real island then you can believe your missions are real?, like santa? you guys really need to get a grip, and another hobby other than the KB and monitor, and a good breath of fresh air wouldn't be a bad thing either! opteryx 1562 Posted December 16, 2007 ok, I'll be the one who posts this. who cares if the island is based on a real location?, Cause some people actually find topography interesting, especially when observing how real world topographical data has been modified and implemented into a game engine. how does this change anything? if its a real island then you can believe your missions are real?, like santa? you guys really need to get a grip, and another hobby other than the KB and monitor, and a good breath of fresh air wouldn't be a bad thing either! Here's a more suitable place for you to exercise moronic statements.

I personally find it very interesting what hypno toad found out. As Opteryx stated some people are interested in topography, geography and other similar subjects. If this is not your interest then it ok. But why critisice somebody who shares some interesting data about island similarity? If you're not interested in this subject the simply ignore this topic. I suppose there are other subjects you're interested in, while other do not. Would you like to be criticised because of this?

Spare me, oh mighty keyboard commando! You are so mighty because you go on the Bohemia Interactive forums and insult the users in your spare time! Some of us are interested in this, if you are coming here for attention, then please go on a dating hot line or something. We talk about armed assault here. And since when are we only allowed to talk about a subject if it changes something? Can somebody find that line in the forum rules for me? I must have missed it. trini scourge 1 Posted December 16, 2007 Nice find hypno toad. The topography looks almost identical to my untrained eyes.
wamingo 1 Posted December 16, 2007 I believe Ascension Island was mentioned before in similar thread long ago. It does have a lot of similarities size wise and location and such. But I'm pretty sure the island has been heavily edited so it's hard to tell... We could use the topology data and see if it matches even remotely. Chances are that arma's island is a very exaggerated version of Ascension Island. Where to find topology data?

High res data of such remote places is very hard or impossible to come by for free I'm afraid.
