DMHide v0.3

*Extended Init Event Handler required*

This is a simple little idea - a place to hide. Now that more & more AI addons are having some sort of a "search" functionality I thought it would be nice to be actually able to hide. To this end, this addon will spawn a doughnut-shaped viewblock object around you to hide inside. The visible model is an umbrella-shaped cover, but this only serves as a visual representation and is NOT the shape of the viewblock.

The doughnut shape means that although you can be hidden from AI that are searching for you, if they get too close they can see "down" into it, and see you. They have to be quite close, and they have to also be looking in your direction. The doughnut-shape will spawn under the ground, and over the course of 50 seconds or so will rise up, gradually hiding you. No insta-hide I'm afraid smile_o.gif

Also, each time you fire or throw a weapon, the hide will drop by 25cm, equivalent to half it's height. It will then start to slowly rise up again. This is so that snipers can hide out & snipe reasonably safely, but not too often lest they give their position away.

After two closely spaced shots for example, you will be fully exposed for some time. If the hide gets below a certain depth under the ground due to too many shots too close together, it will disappear altogether and you'll need to re-hide, which you won't be able to do for a random amount of time not less than 20 seconds and not more than 40.

Also, moving more than 1m in any direction from the initial hide position will also make it disappear. Dying will make it disappear.

This is probably functional in MP, but both server & clients must have it. It is totally untested in MP. Obviously you won't be invisible to human players, but the visual representation can hide you pretty effectively if you choose your hiding place logically, i.e. around suitable cover. Quite obviously this addon is meant to fool AI only, with severe restrictions. It works best if you remove yourself from the area you suspect will be searched and hide nearby.

Enjoy it for what it is, it's not meant as some sort of cheat, but rather a way to inject some amount of tension into a game that has AI enhanced search functionality, primarily for SP gaming.

This has been tested as having good gameplay with UPS, TrueRangeAI and Suppression. But especially UPS, which will come looking for you smile_o.gif

*edit* there is an inbuilt anti-cheat mechanism that prevents two or more players from sharing one hide. So you might be ingenious for thinking that you can snuggle up to your hide-buddy while shooting all you like, but you'll both get exposed after a few shots wink_o.gif

LOL, yeah, just try it out for what it is, a sort of idea/toy/concept. No doubt some won't like the idea, all I can tell you is I've got some great gameplay out of it hiding out somewhere wink_o.gif

I like it. Just tried it for a 5 min or so and I'm having a blast. Definitely a fun tweak to the game.

the hide option doesnt seem to appear for me

Yeah that would be great smile_o.gif I could get rid of the hide visual representation then. Be a bit tense deciding whether or not you are hidden though wink_o.gif

Yea, combined with a ghillie suit this would be great! Anyone knows if someone is working on a "ghillie" (or plan to)?

Ohh... Awesome! I really like the work being put into getting the game to work better with the AI we have, and this is a huge step in the right direction.

Unfortunately it doesn't help against the AI's ability to triangulate you instantly by hearing, but at least they won't see you and snipe you at 400m now. yay.gif

I think you'll be surprised at their ineffectiveness from just hearing. It's quite obvious they CAN hear you as you move about & shuffle around, but they rarely fire at just sound. Sometimes they do, especially grenades, but most times they just act suspicious.

Ohhh, that's really good news. So as long as one only fires a single shot maybe once per 30 seconds they'll be very bad at pinpointing until they get so close they see over the viewblocks? Marvelousitatious!

Thanks for the pointer Mr Burns. Due to severe lack of moddeling skills etc. I'm not the right man to do it but maybe someone else will pick up the ball and make a nice standalone ghillie sniper unit.

Nice Idea!

But it should look more like they have bushes on 'em self...like an extreme Ghillisuit.

I saw this extreme Ghillisuit-like defilade on TV for German Army(infantry). They looked like they were bushes. But I can't find pics...hope you know what I mean. Maybe simply add two or three Bushes on the back of a aoldier.(Only for the visual part!! )

And what about the desert areas? (also only for the visual thing)

Well it's not really designed to fool human players, you can do that just by using surrounding bushes, it's just a visual representation to show you as hiding. I might lose it. For human use I would suggest a custom Ghillie suit. I could spawn vegetation objects around to help with hiding from human players but exactly the same problem would arise, that of what vegetation models are most appropriate.

That said, the grass umbrella can be quite effective on the right surface.
