opteryx 1562 Posted October 9, 2007 http://www.raize.ch/Reisen/velo-eurasien/satellite-images/satellite-westtibet-large.jpg could this be useful? -edit- I mean something around 4 time the size of Rahmadi, it could be useful. Sahrani is 20480 pixels in width/height.

opteryx 1562 Posted October 9, 2007 even if that picture covers hundred of miles? Well the resolution is crap.
rstratton 0 Posted October 9, 2007 it was the best and highest res picture i could find. so a 7000x3000 pixel picture isnt big enough
opteryx 1562 Posted October 9, 2007 it was the best and highest res picture i could find. so a 7000x3000 pixel picture isnt big enough It's very simple, if you want a huge map bigger that Sahrani based on real world satellite imagery you're probably looking at an image of many Gigabytes, the time and resources needed to edit, export, convert format and possibly redo due to unseen errors is unrealistic. I sincerely doubt anyone would go for it.

opteryx 1562 Posted October 9, 2007 @ Oct. 09 2007,09:16)]Something's wrong. The shadows on the ground clearly show ridges on top of the hills but the hilltops are smooth and round... Nothing's wrong, it's actually very well made, but as I said: A good source of satellite images for one, now not just high res, but also one without objects casting long shadows. Also pasting together screen shots from Google Earth is really an excruciating nightmare, especially due to nature of the earth curvature. Then there's making a acceptable mask for it (which is very hard due to being limited to only 4 detail textures per segment) and THEN it's matching up the sat layer's Hue with the detail texture which can only be precisely done via observing it in-game which requires a long and generally annoying import and format conversion process. Allie 0 Posted October 9, 2007 Hi there everybody, I'm really pleased to hear so many good things of our project. Again like Average Joe said, this is my first project on making a terrain, its gonne take a while before i really have a final release, i'm learning while making the terrain. Some things: 1-The coloring will be done so everything will be much better tuned , i know the colors are a bit to 'hard'. 2-roughness of terrain, so vehicles could drive normal on it. 3-Level terrain at airport, still some bumps there. 4-I have somebody else working on placing object and try to create a couple of nice settlements. 5-more and better vegetation is implemented as we speak. 6-A couple of small roads are in the make too. Please let the comments come in. The base sat pic was created out of 150 google earth pictures, i made an overlay in google earth of a rasterimage( so you can return some other time and go on with taking pictures), so you know where to take a picture, the height your looking from needs to be exactly the same for all pictures, and be sure you allways keep north up. The terrain is created out of the sat pic which i changed to a greyscale PNG, then before import to Wilbur i colored the terrain so the place that need to be flat are all of the same color grey, this will result in Wilbur in a flat terrain on the places with the same color grey. In Wilbur i blured the picture a bit and the via the PBL import methode i import the greyscale PNG into visitor. After import you have to blur the terrain 2 more times with the errosion option in visitor. The sat_lco.png and the satmask_lco.png are also created from the base sat pic. Alot of fotoshopping involved here to get rid of buildings people or other stuff you dont want to be shown ingame. So my whole project is created out of that 1 sat pic i created true glueing together 150 google earth pics. I'm not really sure so i wont give a date when ready but it wont be long dont worry. Thank you Armaholic for hosting the .PBO file. Thank you Opteryx, your samples and comments helped me alot. Thanks to all others posting stuff on the forum. weedomatic 0 Posted October 9, 2007 Very, very nice W(IP), indeed. Don't forget to add some player-animations for crunching/spitting out sand. J/K, keep up the good work.
Dwarden 1125 Posted October 9, 2007 very nice work on this HDTP btw. as You may know there was search for missing Steve Fossett using sat imaginery, i think the best data was with 0.6m precision as there are multiple layers (varied quality) over not so long time period available maybe someone find it useful for trying as map especially as area around Sierra Nevada mountains is very nice if anyone want these layers just tell me
luki 53 Posted October 9, 2007 Nice work, good training map for air vehicles!
LoFFeN 0 Posted October 9, 2007 Awesome map, guys. Â Request for later version: Add a "main-highway/road" somewhere on the map maybe?

killerwhale 1 Posted October 9, 2007 How do you install this
bravo 6 0 Posted October 9, 2007 How do you install this this is like a normal addon. the download link => "border.rar" contains a file "border.pbo" all you need to do is to create a folder in order to have something like this: <table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tr><td>Code Sample </td></tr><tr><td id="CODE">C:\Program files\Bohemia Interactive\ArmA\@Islands\addons and in the addons folder you must have that file "border.pbo". The respective ARMA shortcut will be something like this: <table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tr><td>Code Sample </td></tr><tr><td id="CODE">"C:\Program files\Bohemia Interactive\ArmA\arma.exe" -mod=@Islands -nosplash -world=empty Note: the -nosplash -world=empty are extras, so arma starts faster
jamesg 0 Posted October 9, 2007 Really, really nice work. We now have a map with some decent believable terrain on it worth fighting for.

opteryx 1562 Posted October 9, 2007 great!Don't forget: Make them Lag Free Actually, creating a map of sufficient quality with a high enough object count is rather hard, the biggest perpetrator causing reduced frame rate in ArmA is vegetation, which wont be in any great quantity on this map anyway. bravo 6 0 Posted October 10, 2007 You guys intend to make the island bigger? I ask this because if you set the with View distance to <s>30km</s> 10km and if you fly over 2700m height you can see the hole island as a square. I'm really impressed so far because i can fly with a harrier in this map setting view distance to <s>30km</s>10km (max) withou lag. Only have alittle fog but thats another story. I really like how you guys ended the limitations of the map. I'm really excited about this project, I believe it has potential for one of the greatest map in ARMA history. Wish the team good luck and good inspirations. Important: A good map is always a fluid map without LAG Cant wait to ear more news about this project. Keep us tuned! edit: 30km my ass ( i wish )
