Postprocessing

Recommended Posts

I always put postprocessing to low because everything is blurred on higher settings as if I needed glasses. Also this movie-simulation (focus) is odd. In movies there's a purpose for this, as the movie-makers intend to make the viewers look at the important parts of an image. But in games I see no purpose for this. It makes things you look at blurred while other parts of the screen are sharp. Not a very nice conflict.

Close 1 eye, hold 1 finger in front of your other eye. Focus at your finger, now try to look at the background withous moving your eye. Indeed, the background is blurry. wink_o.gif

(Although in ArmA its a bit overdone, and it doesnt focus at the thing you are aiming at, although that may be done on puprose because constant ingame refocussing would probably make you quite sick after playing for 10 minutes tounge2.gif )

Decided to turn it off anyway. Too blurry. What do I miss apart from blur and focus?

The subtle soft glow effect is gone and the sun flare looks worse.

Honestly I wish that the blur effect was a little less. It is kind of nice how it gives you the feeling that its a hot day outside, but its too overdone... really does feel like I'm not wearing glasses.

Until it actually focuses on what you are aiming at it is nothing but pointless attempted eye candy. It'd make much more sense if the blur was not present until you actually shouldered your gun and then it was centered on your point of aim.

I wish I could have the other post processing effects without the blur...

You either have anti-aliasing set to 'normal' or your resolution is too low. Or maybe you are too fussy tounge2.gif I hardly notice any blur, except for the depth-of-field effect.

I think the visuals effects and blur etc make the game WAY more immersive. Freaking genius on BIS part.

Just like every single new-fangled visual effect it gets put in at 500% of real-looking effect just to show it off. Game developers don't really understand the concept of subtle when it comes to new features like these.

Rag doll? Can you think of a game with rag doll physics that didn't place every 3rd enemy at the top of a flight of stairs or plant TNT under his chair just to show off the flailing?

HDR Lighting? Any recent games where the HDR lighting wasn't hugely noticable? Walking into dead black alcove suddenly turning visable, the ground outside turning near white.

I love ArmA's sound occulsion. Step behind a tree and suddenly the Mi-17 50m away sounds 5km away.

I actually hated PP the first time I used it and have had it low since then. Yesterday (in the constant battle to figure out the best looking video settings Vs performance) I noticed I could drop resolution to 1152x864 and turn on PP to High and It acts like a kind of AA ( I cant use AA, as it brings my frames down too much)

I also like how objects which you are focusing on are not blurred, I didnt notice that before. Although some times, with scopes, it seems to take a bit to figure out what your focusing on.

P.S. specs are : AMD 3500, POV 7800GS 256 AGP, 2 GB Ram.

..that would be because its not blur, its a Depth-of-Field effect. Therefore that is usually what is supposed to happen.

Well no .... There is no blur whatsoever... Putting post process on high (among other things) creates a Depth of Field effect - no blur. DoF ...

What happend to the sunglasses anyway, we had back in ofp. In the ArmA Manual it's written down how to activate them, but it doesn't work

It doesnt look 'realistic' because u cant simulate an eye on a screen...

What i mean is, when you're focusing on something with your eyes and the area around your focus blurs its often unnoticable and is often in your peripheral vision.

On a game this has to be simulated, but your eye will just see a fake blur around the outside, its hard to explain what i mean. But a natural 'blur' is much more unnoticable, as when you're playing a game you focus on the graphics and you only view it from a 'camera' as such.

Bah that probably made no sense :P But i know what i mean biggrin_o.gif

The game fails in DOF because it assumes your eye is focusing at the distance of the closest object that your gun is pointed.
