Demo today....WOOT

All the demo servers lag like hell it's ruining the demo.

Lastnight i tried for an hour to join a server.i only join ones with 3 ticks in the ping but it's impossible to play the demo with lag like that.

Dedicated server needed badly,but bis are on holiday now right ?

this is fooked.

great game though.

Well I played the demo many hours by now and I didn't find any problem finding fast servers..... huh.gif

Instead I have a question: although I've no probs with CTF and Coop I've experienced very long loading times for CTI and after a couple of minutes max of waiting I usually turn to something else. Is it me or somebody else are having the same issue?

I've got the impression that the bullet dispersion is now increased a bit (less times being sniped by AI at 200 mt distance)? Am I dreaming?

Demo run first time, but cant join or create game, game crash with windows error of armedassault.exe or kernel

After error cant relaunch game, need restart for relaunch, but go join or create and crash again and again... HELP!

1. The view distance slider doesn't seem to work?or just me?

2. The auto-level vehicle control is ...well not good, I think alot of OFP player would prefer the vehicle control of OFP.

3. The high HDR setting cause quite a hit on fps.

Thank you BIS for releasing the demo in time for the Xmas break! I have had a chance to spend some quality time on it and I am overall very impressed with the work that you have put into it! The graphics are awesome for this kind of large-scale environment. And all this even with my AGP rig:

Pentium 4 CPU 3.20GHz (2 CPUs). 2 GB ddr400 RAM. GeForce 6800 GS 256.0 MB (slightly tweaked). Forceware Version: 9371. AGP 8X M.board. Realtek AC97 Audio. Windows XP Home Edition Svc. Pack 2. DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904). Page File: 3072MB.

… It is still playable at between 17-30 fps average (slows down in trees and when lots happen on CTI mission). I've spent much time tweaking and found that I get the best performance from these settings here!

Also, I hope it is just the Demo Version but when I host a LAN game I don’t expect to be joined by players on the Internet! I have to have it password protected on LAN to prevent this from happening in the Demo! Please sort out the HDR too I’ve improved it by tweaking the Gamma and brightness sliders but it is still odd the way it keeps going light and dark in strange situations! Sun glare is good though!

The AI are also a little too elite IMO with their X Ray vision and supper shooting! Otherwise I am looking forward to the full game in February!

Well I only play single player but I still downloaded the demo and have been messing about in it.

My specs are 4000 amd, 1 gb ram and 6800gs. Res 1074x768 (although I'm quite impressed by how it looks on 800x600 - the only downside is the action menu font at this res). Shadows, post proc, AA anit trop all off, everythng else on normal.

According to Fraps, averaging 25 - 30 fps (dipping to low 20's  round lots of vegetation) on the demo co-op mission. Although to my eye everything seems to be running pretty smooth and importantly, I haven't been killed due to stuttering.

I'll probably write more detailed thoughts once I've played the single player demo and bought the 505 release.

In the meantime:

The Good +

+ Graphics. Very nice, the whole world feels vibrant, solid and alive. No more of the OFP paperish feel.

+ Collision detection. Another major gripe of OFP has gone (well, as far as I can see).

+ AI. Although still prone to some daftness, I've experienced the enemy flanking me, circling and killing me from behind.One time I managed to get in the city and bumped into an friendly soldier making his way through a corridor. Seen some bounding overwatch.

/ Tanks seem 'light' when driving about. Skidding.

Bad -

- Voices. Bloody hell...! It sounds like the cast of Looney Tunes.

- Vehicle rusting. Shooting the tyres gets this horrific texture. Yuck.

- Vehicle sounds. Same whine from OFP. Not so much the sound of a tank approaching as a rogue vacuum cleaner.

- Map loading. Enough said.

In short it looks like ArmA, like OFP, is another rough diamond.

I'm looking forward to it's 505 release in Feb. smile_o.gif

if anyone's struggling to find a good demo server i recommend the 'santa claus on arma dedicated 1.03'

apparently it's only 512kb/s !? upload but it was lag free with 16 players (ctf)

I just tried the blackhawk, when i enabled autohover the thing started swinging left and right (like a swing) and if i try to adjust/compensate to keep it stable it just turns direction, i cant imagine how it was in 1.0...

I cant get the a.i. to man the other minigun on the UH60 (no comand for it) and a.i. doesnt move when they select handguns.

AK sights are tiny, handgun sights are huge (holding a handgun next to your face?).

I can put 50 rounds on a target with the m249 but i cant put two AK/M16 rounds on a target without adjusting alot, recoil is just weird on the AR's.

Its very promissing but needs much work, way too rough imo smile_o.gif .

Finally, I can put the demo down.

Ending cinematic Debriefing screen

I'm not sure what it says for realism when I, playing alone (aside from the AI) manage to take out 45 guys, a truck and a BRDM while dying twice.  It does give a nice Rambo feel smile_o.gif

Done by retreating to the next town and setting up my guys and humvees behind walls and such, and goading the enemy into attacking.  Took out 10 or so while losing a guy, until the first BRDM moved in.  I lost 4 when it attacked, but someone took out its tire, the crew bailed and got shot down.

At that point, I got in the BRDM.  Couldn't convince my two remaining dudes to get in with me, so I left them as backup and drove into town (tough with a busted tire), switching frequently from driver to gunner.  Moved down guys and the other BRDM.  Never got shot at.

Couldn't find anyone else, so I drive the BRDM back and left it with my backups, and went building to building on foot, taking out the last two guys.  Yay.  It feels more like I figured out how to beat a game than how to survive a battle, but it was fun.  

I was kinda disappointed it didn't let me proceed to the rendesvous to board the UH60, but dumped me into the cinematic as soon as the town was cleared.  WTH?

I had only one enemy-guy left. Decided to frag it with grenade (i knew where enemy was), but of course grenade blew-up immediatly after it left my hand... So i died! I was kinda pissed after that. banghead.gif

Choppers availible in CTI Mode. MI 17 + UH 60 are availible depending on which side you pick. You can also try out the T72 + M1 tanks.

And yeah 'rendevouz with the chopper' doesnt actually happen, and u gotta hunt the WHOLE town to find the last guy.

There is also the HIP if you select the SLA but the CTI thingy runs real bad here sad_o.gif .

After 10 minutes of playing CTI i had only 2-3 fps on screen... My processor (2.6 ghz) just screamed for mecry and rest crazy_o.gif

Hmmm CTI works fine for me. Having a lot of fun, even on my own. Hope to have some more players in the coming weeks.

Errm, the minimum specs released on the biki earlier (before ArmA was released), are they still considered the minimum specs, or have it been turned up? Because I suppose the ArmA demo doesn't need a better computer than the whole game (?), and in that case the minimum specs are total bullshit. I've got a better computer than the minimum specs except for my GFX card, which is (AFAIK) the worst GFX card supposed to be able to run ArmA...but I wasn't even close to being able to run the demo. Turned everything down to lowest possible, but the game lagged like a bitch, even in the menu...only time it didn't lag was in briefing...

Though I have to add that I didn't really expect being able to run the demo/game...but I just mean, either BIS must adjust the minimum specs or they will have to do some serious work on the game to make it run on the minimum specs confused_o.gif

Guess I'll just have to drop buying ArmA until I'm done with my mandatory military service in a year, when I'll hopefully get my own computer confused_o.gif

Its means that you have to higher your AI skill settings (0.85?)

Hmm.. this might have something to do with RAM or graphics card... I have a much slower processor but my average fps is much higher... well, not THAT much.. like 9 or 10.

After triyng to fly an UH-60 I have to agree with those are complaining with the flying model: without proper peripherals is quite unplayable. The auto-hoover is pretty useless as the chopper do what it wants anyway: I've crashed to ground countless times while trying to figure how I should pilot it. Better to ignore flying vehicles 'till BIS (hopefully) will fix 'em. crazy_o.gif

As for AR and light weapons I'm quite happy with 'em: in OFP I liked playing missions that featured JAM HD weapons so the new recoil/ballistic model is not a big challenge/surprise for me.

I was playing CTI on my medium-high PC where I get a constant 25-27 FPS, and after about 45 minutes or more I noticed the CTI mission was running bad. Anyway, about the same time it started to run bad I also noticed that there were piles(dozens) of enemy corpses which I killed during the mission in each town I had been to, that did not disappear. Perhaps the corpses disappear after a long time, I don't know, I was not watching to see how long it takes. If the corpses stay around for a long time or worse, do not disappear ever, this can definetly cause a drop in performance, as I have experienced this situation before in a OFP CTI mission with no corpse removal system. Can anyone confirm that when playing CTI, that the corpses(dead bodies) do not ever disappear or it simply waits a certain amount of time?

I've played CTI for about 3 hours and the corpses never disappear. They pile up at every position I've taken. Handy for getting gear and weapons off of, but not so great for performance.

I decided to test my theory: I began a CTI mission, drove a T-72 to the nearest town, killed all the enemy infantry there, which was a total of 9 soldiers, and captured the town. After 30 minutes all 9 original corpses were still there, which leads me to believe 1 of 2 things. Either:

1. Corpses do not EVER disappear in the CTI mission Demo

OR

2. Corpses disappear sometime after 30 minutes, or when a certain number of corpses accumulate on the map, they will start to disappear as a new corpse is created. Thus maintaining a corpse limit within the mission.

I personally believe the corpses are not scripted to disappear, atleast not in the CTI mission Demo (they likely will in the full game). If anyone wants to test this further, be my guest. Also, it seems obvious to me that a large number of accumulated corpses will have an effect on game performance(Frames Per Sec.). However, the effects may vary on each players PC, if you have a super-fast PC the effects of corpse accumulation may not be noticable until a large number of corpses has accumulated.

Remember this is all my speculation and theory, the drop in performance in the CTI mission may not be related to the corpse accumulation. Test it yourself, and draw your own conclusions.
