ATI Drivers

Recommended Posts

I have tried rolling back the drivers to v6.7 and am still getting the same problems. I agree, one or both sides should be looking at the problem. I cant believe that these wern't tested though.

I used to run a Radeon 9600 (256MB), and it ran fine on low quality settings (FPSs in the low 20s).

Now I got a 1950XTX, and it too, runs just fine (ArmA did crash a few times though, when I was tinkering around with the quality settings. I think it was the Catalyst AI option that caused trouble.).

So the problem you're experiencing must be particular to specific system configurations, but nothing general about ATI cards or drivers.

Here's a screenshot of my Catalyst info:

problem might be old version of Catalyst or some tweak (even i ran ArmA on 6.10/6.11/6.12 WHQL and beta versions of these drivers and 9700, X800,X1300,x1600,x1650,1950 w/o such error)

Did you extensively test every card? Or just check the main menu and leave because I personally can sometimes play a round or two and not have any glitches. It took me 3 or 4 rounds after installing the game to get any artifacts whatsoever. I downloaded the latest drivers (6.12) with the Catalyst Control Center, so it can't be an old Catalyst version. I installed the latest OpenAL too, so that can’t be it either. I fiddled around with the Geometry Instancing, Catalyst AI, and Vertical Refresh, all with no positive results. It’s safe to say that if it’s a specific system configuration, it’s a popular one considering how many people with a wide variety of ATI cards are having this trouble.

All I’d like to know is if Bohemia Interactive has been informed of this issue and that they are looking into it.

it happens rarely and randomly ...

i tried heavy underclock card just to be sure it's not some heat issue but it still appear

Same problem here.

Ati Radeon 9800 Pro..

When i enable 24z buffering etc, and add maxmem 400 AND put all my settings to low and the lowest res, it holds out a little longer than normal

But after a few min the spikes and artifacts show up mad_o.gif

Anyone got a solution..?

I would just like to add that I don't believe this to be the case and if it is, ATI needs to address it yesterday, as does BI.

This issue has been a problem for my rig since the beginning and tinkering will reduce the problem but never fix it, or at least, not for long. I've tried the last 4 driver releases of ATI Drivers only and nothing made a difference.

I've also experienced issues with Black and White2 and more recently, rFactor as I mentioned previously. I actually took the time to report everything to ATI and all they did was point me to the knowledgebase (gee, I wonder if maybe I may have already looked there, duh!wink_o.gif.

Anyway, out of sheer frustration with the entire soap opera that seems to plague many of us ATI users, I decided to pick up an 8800GTS. I came home, unistalled everything ATI, replaced the card, updated the drivers and voila, no problem.

For me this was not simply an ArmA issue, it was an ATI issue.

Also, I have made no system config changes between either card which means they both had the same opportunity to play apples to apples on my rig. My issues with Black and White2 and rFactor have also completely disappeared as have any issues with ArmA.

In closing, I want to apologize for the anger in my post. I've done everything I can think of to keep my ATI card and they were paramount in driving me to camp NVIDIA. My thoughts in this and other ATI posts represent well over 3 weeks of pent up frustration which has spilled out in my correspondence now and then.

Prior to patch 1.02 I also had this failure, I must say that setting the Texture Detail to very low and activating tripple buffer and z-Buffer 24Bit solved this problem for me completely. After the patch 1.02 I don't have this error even with Textures Very High and without tripple buffer and forcing 24Bit Z-Buffer but what still remains for me is big FPS drops near Foliage or Grass even with all settings on very low. There must be still something wrong in the games engine that causes this FPS drops perhaps this cases by some systems also this spike error too.

I also think this is problem of ATI and BIS, ATI should check their drivers but BIS should also further optimize the engine.

I have an ATI Radeon 9800XT.

Tried several drivers aswell..but no effect at all.

Does BI know of this problem, and have they given any reaction?

Would be great to see this problem fixed by ATI & BI thumbs-up.gif

You don't need this software to change this setting you can do it trough system prefrences for this look at this post from Micrsoft Knowledgebase : Systemchache

For me this settings doesn't change anything.

This same issue was raised in another thread, he claims to have fixed it:

Quote[/b] ]foun the problem... I got the wrong screen selected... i got

Normal 4:3 but u have to select TFT and everything is fixed

So in your settings try fiddling with the 4:3 + TFT etc depending on what your monitor is. He claims its fixed but this is untested, just thought i would let you guys know to see if it helps smile_o.gif

i have 800pro pe no problems at all.

Which drivers do you have?

I also have a 9800pro and the game is unplayable with drivers newer than 5.8.

Old drivers can be found here:

ATI Drivers

So I guess the problems is something that has changed in the drivers since version 5.8.

Yeah I have an x850ce and I have not encountered a single problem that's anything like the ones in this thread. I'm using the latest drivers.

edit:

@Skullburner

That's really weird that forcing a 24 bit zbuffer helped your problem, considering that that's an Opengl API specific setting and ArmA is a D3d program! Same with tripple buffering! That should not have hand any effect at all!

thats true I also was wandering but I am not sure if it could 100% solve my problems. Only what I am sure is that problem was completely solved as I turned Texture Details on very low, which was stated from Suma in my troubleshooting thread, after that i could play without these spikes occurring any more with Arma Patch 1.01! After I installed 1.02 I could set my Texture settings on very high and this problem with spikes never occurred again so there must be something BIS changed in Arma Patch 1.02 which solved my problems with spikes. What remained are big FPS drops which are known to happen in certain places making the game unplayable for me.

Still I must test installing of catalyst 5.8 drivers.

I have German Arma patched to 1.02, Radeon 9800XT 256MB.

I have tried catalyst 5.8 drivers and it seems that they improve overall performance.

Now I have overall better performance on my card. What is remaining is massive FPS drop in forests and near bushes but in the cities I have FPS around 25.

So if BIS solves remaining performance problems it should run good on my rig at least in very low settings.

My specs P4 3.2GHz HT, 2048MB RAM, R9800XT 256MB, Windows XP Pro.

This happens for me too but you could try enabling geometry instancing in your catalyst control centre for a slight boost.

about that "similar" bug:

small suggestion for owners of X1950 pro cards (AGP, PCIe both 256 and 512MB variants) ...

get 3DMark2003 and run RagTroll test (best in resolution 1280x1024 and higher with enabled AA/AF) ...

check this picture

if You get error (repeat test more than once) similar like above (i tested it on multiple X1950pro cards from Sapphire and HIS) then it may happen (rarely) also in Armed Assault ...

i was told this bug can be one of "glitch left overs" in ATI drivers ... (it happens with older cards too depends on drivers etc)

fastest way how get this fixed is report it via ATI official bug report system and spread word ...

p.s. about these claiming it's heat issue , all tested cards were underclocked to possible minimum and i guess 5+ cards of different models can't be "all of sudden" faulty
