IE saving pictures as *.bmp

I've had this problem for a while. It's happening a lot more often lately. I save pictures from internet explorer and then they save as bmp (no matter what format they are) and I cannot tell sizes of photos either (says not available) when I click properties.

I have heard a solution is deleting the temp internet cache, clearing cookies etc, but that only works for so long and it freezes up the computer as they grow quite large.

I noticed the same problem a few weeks ago when Firefox wasn't working and I had to use IE...when I used to use IE the the problem occurred randomly.

I have to agree, you should switch to alternatives. IE is one of the worst programs a man has made! Mozilla, Firefox, Opera ... Any of these is better, safer and actually user-friendly.

To be fair, the SP2 version of IE is far better. Integrated popup blocker, a host of security options, and patched to buggery.

SP2 is going to be what XP should have been. (Secure!)

I trialed SP2 on some machines in work, but had to remove it as it was having conflicts with UltraVNC and WinFax. (Security settings mess up DCOM services. It's being fixed by MS)

I only know of deleteing temp int.files and cookies.

When you deleted the temp-int.files and cookies, did you do that through properties in IE or did you do it manually. Sometimes windows does'nt delete them all when you do it through IE properties. I always do it manually.

I have two.....

1. IE will no longer download zip/exe/rar, I don't get the save-as box anymore for those types, but do for other types

2. If I have a couple of browser windows open IE keeps popping up the last one loaded, annoying when I'm trying to write a post in another window while one loads

For the first one try this:

Go into Explorer(not IE, just Windows Explorer).

Go to Tools->Folder Options->File Types

Go to the file types that you are having issues with.

Click the Advanced button, and check Confirm Open After Download.

I'm surprised that most people still use IE, especially with the god-knows-how many vulnerabilities. Just try Mozilla Suite or Firefox. You won't be going back to IE.

PS: placebo, with tabbed browsing you could be simutaneously banning loads people without clogging up your task bar!

Just put a new name into the Save as field and add .jpg to it and it will save it as a jpg instead of as a bmp.

This works so-so though. The file size info seems to get screwed, and Photoshop won't open them, saying it encountered an unknown jpg-marker or something.

Firefox is a fast standards compliant browser(unlike IE, and browsers based off it such as MyIE and AvantBrowser). It supports tabbed browsing, as well as themes. There are also many plugins available for Firefox(some of the ones I use are Chatzilla, an IRC client, GoogleBar, an unnofficial clone of the Google toolbar, Web Developer, which makes it easier to test web pages, and QuickNote, which you can jot down notes in). Firefox is free(in all senses), open source, and works on many platforms, such as Linux, Windows and Macs. Since its open source you know there is no spyware or anything, since you can download the source code to Firefox. You should also check out Thunderbird, which is an email(POP3/IMAP/SMTP) client designed to go with Firefox.

I can drag links to open in new tabs with Firefox too. With Firefox you won't have to worry about updating it every 2 hours because of a new security vulnerability found. There has been only one major vulnerability found in Firefox as far as I can remember, and that was fixed very quickly, and it was more of a Windows thing if I recall correctly(IE is succeptible to it as well).

Someone said that IE from Windows XP SP2 is a lot better. Well, no offense to M$ but they've had long enough. The first release version of IE(1.0) was realeased over 9 years ago. The first release version of Mozilla(1.0, and that's Mozilla Suite, not Firefox) was released only two years ago and is still in almost all ways much better than IE. You shouldn't just settle with a browser that "works ok..." or that "isn't totally broken". You should use a browser that makes you say "holy shit, this is awesome". That browser, is Mozilla Firefox.
