IceFire 0 Posted July 9, 2004 Hi, I am trying to learn about different nutritional food sources and their effectiveness as a fuel source and cost versus other less conventional food sources, such as military MRE's(U.S), or hiker/backpacker foods. First I would like to ask you(especially those of you who are in good physical condition) the cost of the amount of food you consume per day/per meal(again, assuming you are well nourished, healthy and don't go hungry). Also try to tell us what these foods are. And if you can, the estimated calories you consume(only if you know or can bother to figure it out), and if it is a good fuel source. My next question is to those who happen to normally eat unusual/alternative foods that may provide a good source of nuitrition. If you are in the military, this would be MREs or whatever you may eat that would be in that nature(campers food). So what is the average cost of each of these meals? Do you find them to be a good source of fuel, energy? My aim is to find several sources of different fuel foods, that are easy to prepare, low cost(less or equal to the cost of normal in home meals, or maybe even slightly higher), something that is still economicallly efficient comopared to normal meals. These questions are particularly directed to anyone who is in excellent shape and has a "high performance" lifestyle, military, athletes, mountain climbers, etc.
IceFire 0 Posted July 9, 2004 Just as a note, I was recently in a camping store and found ready cooked camping food that is stored in plastic bags. You just open the bag, pour in some hot or boiling water, and mix. They come in a variety of foods, beef strogonoff, spagetti and meatballs, etc.. They are kind of like MRE's but they arn't, they are campers food. Each bag has something like 660 calories. I don't remember the price, but I don't remember it being unreasonable. I might just buy them to have for lunch on days I don't feel like cooking. And I am sure it is better than frozen meal crap. After all, it is designed to be nutritious. redliner47 0 Posted July 9, 2004 the thing is with MRE's, less on taste more on purpose, like everything else in the military although some of them can be quite tasty
USSoldier11B 0 Posted July 9, 2004 Not a big fan of MRE's although I do like the Burrito, Enchilada, and Cheese Tortellini.....I like the dyhydrated civilina stuff much more.
IceFire 0 Posted July 9, 2004 I am thinking more and more to the campers food packs I mentioned above and MRE's. I work in a very high activity environment and burn alot of calories fast. I generally eat about 2500 to 3000 calories a day to maintain my weight. I also have a fast metabolism. I need more easy to prepare, simple meals ready to eat. Add on exercise after work, and I need even more efficient sources of fuel.

The day you can't drink 6 pints every night without putting on weight was the saddest of my life Having to exercise to drink beer! Fancy that! (Besides, I think I did severe damage to my liver in those days. Ah, the life of a student)

DarkLight 0 Posted July 9, 2004 I eat all kind of mcdonald food, pizza, hamburgers, hot dogs every day im slim like a piece of paper and not have any health problems  Sure you don't notice it... YET. We learned about this stuff this year (biology) and trust me, we call stuff like that 'sneaky killers' because you don't notice them until it's too late.  I'd love to explain the full story to you but sad enough i have no fucking clue how what all those scientific words are in English... Oh well... if you feel like becoming a healthy old man then you should change your lifestyle fast (or you might be dead or paralized waaaaay too early...) Just trying to help... GoOB 0 Posted July 9, 2004 I eat all kind of mcdonald food, pizza, hamburgers, hot dogs every day im slim like a piece of paper and not have any health problems Cholesterol heaven And not very nutritious even if it doesn't show on your figure. IceFire, that camping food sounds good enough. But the nights when you do have some time to cook make sure to prepare some Ratatouille together with some form of meat (I love chicken with it). It's tastes great and is very nutritious, all veggies. And surprisingly I love it. This coming from a tenth generation "city-boy" whose parents, grandparents etc. despise vegetables. This Ratatouille recepie is quite complicated and you don't have to do the things that are in it. Just pour some water (not alot) into a frying pan, add veggies of choice (lots of veggies). I usually make it when I'm home alone on weekdays and weekends, as I said great with chicken!
denoir 0 Posted July 9, 2004 How old are you? Enjoy while you can, because that lovely metabolism is going to desert you come 19+! Indeed My advice to anybody is to have at least some semi-healthy routines before that. It comes as quite a nasty surprise when you realize that you can't eat and drink what you want without gaining weight. It really sucks when you realize that you can't eat all the good food and that you need to excercise on a regular basis just not to get fat
Baron Hurlothrumbo IIX 0 Posted July 9, 2004 Our military rations are typically boil in the bag efforts, not the dehydrated ones you pour water into (unless its training rations) and are very good. The boxes have the calorific content on the side, if I'm not mistaken. UK meals have far less calories than the US ones, and we aren't expected to eat everything in the box, but the calorific content is plenty for a fit soldier. I typically eat a very low carbohydrate diet, usually only eating meat for most meals. Not the Atkins or whatever its called. Just a low carb diet. I don't eat much (nowadays - used to eat fucking loads when I was a student) - maybe 4 or 5 thick pork sausages for a meal, or a small steak, or a couple of bits of fish. Nothing else. Some fruit every day. Lots of milk and Irn Bru. Also note that most military guys won't be eating rations every day - in fact I think there are limits on how often rations vs cooked meals per month. I'm pretty fit, I think. I run pretty much every day, do plenty of horizontal jogging and get a decent workout with the military every so often. I do drink too much lager, but don't we all?
