I have read some pretty interesting stuff on these scramjets. They seem like a interesting propulsion system where it not for their inability to work when the vehicle is at a standstill or low speeds. Have to carry as scram jet AND a normal jet engine kinda takes away the advantage due to weight smile_o.gif

Space flight mate smile_o.gif 2 engines will be a lot less to carry than tons of liquid oxygen, which the scramject can suck in smile_o.gif

I'm very happy that this experiment was a success, esp. considering the results of the first attempt crazy_o.gif

Hmm I wonder: Can I human resist the G-Force that comes at that speed? Isent the bidy collaps at a speed above mach 3>?

Speed does not cause g-forces, acceleration does.

Just imagine a cruise missile with an engine like that - that would be really hard to shoot down...

Lovely!

The scram jet works with compressing the oxygen from the atmosphere and igniting it. It contains no moving parts leaving the disadvantages of jet behind but is still being energy efficient.

The future idea is to have a 3 step space plane, or a two step long distance plane. Take off with jets bringing the craft up to the speeds where scram will work. Scram needs an initial high speed being able to compress oxygen, scram takes over and will bring the craft up to or close to orbit speed while still in the atmosphere. the last stage, if space is the goal, is handled by a rocket engine.

From ground to orbit using a lot less fuel a rocket would require.

In the early 1900's they thought that you would die if you traveled @ 40mph.... go figure wink_o.gif

btw, the old Saturn V rockets, and the Shuttles travel close to this speed in order to escalpe the earths atmosphere, and the astronaughts dont die, do they?

(The important thing about this, is that Mach 7 was achieved WITHOUT using rockets)

We are currently traveling at an enormous speed so it's as kegetys says only about acceleration. The speed is just a measurement of how fast two objects moves away from each other. Who can say for sure which object is moving and which isn't?

Some speed and rocket info..

Rocket engines are still top when it comes to brute force, acceleration and speed. The problem is the fuel needed for one minute of thrust crazy_o.gif

The space shuttle must reach 20 times the speed of sound in order to get into a useful orbit.

The old Saturn V outperforms the shuttle with 31+ times the speed of sound, but the Russian Energia rocket could beat even that.

In the case of space rockets, a lot of the acceleration is done outside the atmosphere so the friction of the atmosphere is not a problem. It's worse coming back down, that's when good heat shields are needed.

Or even using a carrier type plane as the launch vehicle (Eg an Antonov 124 could lift one easily - it was designed to move the russian shuttle about before launches on it's back.)

The 225 was built for the Buran shuttle, not the 124.

the Antonov AN225 Mirya/Cossack is a real monster , I saw it once at Paris Air Show, this thing is simply monstruous
