In the beginning I avoided unofficial addons it seemed that they slowed down my comp and often they where just not very nice. After someone of the BIS guys (think it was Suma)made a positive statement about Kegetys addons I started downloading them again and I was impressed! Thanks to all the mod teams! It was nice to read Kegetys story!

Heads up at this point for the excellent support Bis gives to the mod community. I remember the times when all kind of people complaint about how bad the Bis support is, especially when it comes to mods. I did not hear any complaints about Bis support for a long time!

I've played OFP since the demo came out, actually that was the first time I heard of the game. PCGamer had an interesting looking FPS on their demo CD and it was something I hadn't seen before. It was friggin' revolutionary! Frankly I've had some bad luck with OFP. Before I had even completed CWC the CD got a huge crack on it. So I was without OFP for a looong time. Then GOTY came out and I bought it, but it lags on my outdated computer so I've never been able to fully enjoy OFP.

I registered to these forums fairly late on April 02 2003 just so I could use the search function to learn some mission making, but then I found the Offtopic section and started posting. I was 14 and ignorant, posted some stupid comments and such, but I've learned a lot in here.

A billion times I've decided to start making addons, but I haven't. Why, I don't know.

Reading all your older member's posts makes me kinda sad 'cos I've missed so much, but since the community shows no sign of dying I bet there's alot to see in the future too. smile_o.gif

Same here, I came here in january 2002 (got OFP in august 2001), about the time when many of the forum legends started to disappear. sad_o.gif

BTW, if somebody is planning on writing a history, make me a deal. I've got the dirty goodies on everybody. I can be like a royal British butler, if you give me the cash  wow_o.gif  biggrin_o.gif

He left the forums after arguing with Avon Lady, he didn't want to say sorry because he wasn't. He deleted his account, but came back later re-registering his old name.

Ahhh, the old busted CD. I've had to buy CWC twice and Res Twice. It just never leaves my drive... I swear, my computer could still play OFP even after I uninstall it... on memory alone. tounge_o.gif

My best memory was clearly the point in the demo when your squad boards the helicopter... I was looking at each unit sitting in a specific location and thinking "no way, no way..."

Here's a nice piece of community history:

If you have Res, then don't you know the "big secret" wink_o.gif ? Contact me over PMs if you don't (Moderators will have a fit otherwise tounge_o.gif ).

shaddap M21. i'll get you with my SVD. wink_o.giftounge_o.gif

one of the most interesting history is O2 related. i forgot what time it was, but in year 2002(first quarter i believe) BIS announced that O2 release will be delayed.

as you can imagine, many forum members were upset. BIS explained that it was due to some licensing and preparation problem(IIRC). there were 3 threads that sprang up in OT section and one of them got to 72 pages or so within an hour or so.(2 others were closed).

Ironically, it was on Kegety's birthday, and he wasn't happy about the delay himself. Some members were lashing out at BIS, while some others(including myself) were not so. Axleonline called for boycott of BIS(which went no where).

Eventually, there was testing phase, which involved some license agreement signing of some sort, and the modmaker group was made to accomodate a small section of forum where the people with limited O2 could discuss about it. it later became the backbone of O2 related section below.

another interesting and exciting time was when OFPR was released. Someone(andOne?) managed to meet Suma at E3, and post some pictures of OFPR from west side of bridge. that immediately started a torrent of exclamations from forum members, and when it was announced that OFPR was going to be released in EU before US, you can bet i was unhappy at CM for this. many people were having orgasm playing with OFPR, and there was a thread about how fast you finished the campaign and what your score was.

some others include release of wrptool from ofpinternals, which enabled a lot of people to make own islands.

and found the config.cpp file which apparently defined everything the addon was, and in a simple-to-edit manner.

Thats funny?I remember back on the Miss Match forums a little different.

This old codger remembers playing the demo for the first time (and first 1st person shooter) and feeling quite nauseated by the movement. I vowed that it wasn't the game for me, being a flight sim fan of old. But when the game appeared on the shelf I bought it.

Then I discovered there was a community, OFPEC, based upon the demo, which had moved onto CWC.

Like all new things I was determined that OFP, the editor, and editing wasn't going to beat me and thus fiddled in the editor trying out such things as triggers and waypoints. Understanding the scripting language made my old grey cells cough and sputter a bit, but I persevered.

Then the announced release of the modelling tools made me dig up an old Truespace and try my hand at 3D. When it was finally released to the modmaker group I thought echh! How could I ever learn this? The first addon was a milestone. Fortunately for Kegety's pioneer into the air with his Hawk helped quite a bit.

I remember the first addon I released.. a submarine.. that didn't do anything but move around like a boat and bounced crazily on the land smile_o.gif. Still, the ability to look back on those early addon days and see the high level of modelling now says something about this community.

I can honestly say that I have never completed CWC nor have I completed Resistance... I still fiddle in the editor, try out new scripts, and use OFP as a test bed for the Falklands Mod addons.

Of all this I can honestly say that the past 2 point something years for me has been the opportunity to meet a great set of friends from all parts of the world, to be able to contribute where I can, and to help others. The 3d modelling, scripting, and texturing has been a bonus. Thanks to everyone who has aided and abetted in my learning experience.

BTW aint nostalgia grand? biggrin_o.gif Now where did I put my teeth..

Sorry Keg, don't got it on me.

It was the pinnacle of fame for BAS.

BAS stopped posting in the official message boards due to some users that kept bugging them and they just kissed up in general.

Well, they had made a post about it (or somebody) did and everyone was kissing up really bad "oh, oh, BAS isn't here anymore! please come back! please! we're sorry for bugging you!"

and Hellfish came in, yelled at Avon for some reason (I forget why, something about being responcible for all the posters in the thread) and said "No, shut up, only I can kiss up. Anybody else who kisses up gets 24h PR."

...And thats why BAS doesn't post here anymore.

Granted, they still make spectacular addons until this day, we just need to even the addons out for East.

Does that freshen your memory?

If I remember correctly, Avon made the post askin' why BAS didn't come around no more...or maybe not. Can't remember.

I wouldn't qualify that as a part of OFP community history. Maybe our forum history, but it hardly effected or effects the greater community.

What I would like to see are the dates of addons that were released that broke the limitations of the OFP engine. Stuff that was revolutionary. CoC Artillery for example, Cargo scripts for transporting vehicle, DKM's group radar system e.t.c.

You know, addons/scripts and their authors whose hard work really made the community stand a awe of the new features that they brought to the game.
