That hole was cut a long time ago, before people started listening to John Muir. Doing that to a redwood today would probably warrant a prison sentence. That entire area of Northernm California where the Red Woods are is completely protected now. The tree is still alive and kicking anyway. As long as you don't cut a complete ring around the bark (which would starve it), healthy tree's can survive such things. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
