Billabong81 0 Posted December 15, 2003 I just realized something. According to CNN, the raid to capture Saddam in his "spider-hole" was called Operation Red Dawn. If I am not mistaken, wasn't that the name of the mission in the CWC campaign where you capture Guba . That is really freaky
m21man 0 Posted December 15, 2003 I was wondering about that . Maybe Bush has been playing too many video games in the Oval Office .
Harnu 0 Posted December 15, 2003 Was thinking the same thing earlier. Â Maybe one of the higher up's plays OFP?
Guest Posted December 15, 2003 Considering they do training on VBS-1...it mightn't be that unlikely you know. Of course it could be the other way around...maybe BIS do some "other" work in their spare time
blackdog~ 0 Posted December 15, 2003 well well... what a kawinkidink. but lets not forget that guba wasn't hiding in a hole :P
ozanzac 0 Posted December 15, 2003 I thought red dawns represented that the rest of the day would be clear of cloud? Meaning his capture would symbolize clear weather ahead for Iraq and its people. But I Dunno. It would be nice to think OpFlash influenced the capture of the Ace of Spades. But I doubt it.
Grizzlie 0 Posted December 15, 2003 OFP is US Army secret weapon I do not know if Bush is playing OFP, but it is possible his staff is @ ozanzac - it was avonlady (if i rememeber) mentioned that is is not only name of mission but codenames of units too. Bush or his staff had nothing to do with this operation. He didn't even know about it until hours after they had nabbed Saddam. It was probably the 4th infantry divisions soldiers playing OFP in their spare time.
Scorpio 0 Posted December 15, 2003 The phrase 'Red Dawn' is mostly associated with the Soviet Union and terrorist groups. There is an Operation Red Dawn in C&C aswell. I don't think it's anything to do with OFP. Although it's strange they called it Red Dawn...the general probably has a heck of a sense of humour.
Longinius 1 Posted December 15, 2003 Probably had more to do with the movie Red Dawn, than the OFP mission. After all, the objectives were even named Wolverine 1 and 2 (and in the movie, the freedomfighters call themselves Wolverines). All though, in the movie the Wolverines are Americans. Heck, go figure. EiZei 0 Posted December 15, 2003 Well, I burst out laughing when I heard the general tell the operation name and the name of the units involved. GO WOLVERINES!!

bush, being the CIC, WAS involved in this operation. it's nice how you turn everything, even a topic about the similarity between a game and a real-world operation, into bush bashing... but anyway, that is indeed quite a coincidence that the operations have the same name... maybe OFP is more popular than we thought? now if you start seeing on the news some reports of their latest plan, called Operation Flashpoint, then you know something weird is really going on! Gollum1 0 Posted December 15, 2003 Hahaha, don't think that U.S Army high-ups play OFP much! Coincidence that you nab Guba there, though. As mentioned before, it's based on the classic 80s movie Red Dawn.

Bush was actually informed of the operation, after it was put into action. Although Bush is your CIC, he is not a military man, and as such shouldn't have any input into how operations are carried out. You have an officer corp to do that for you. Politicains should hand out broad guidelines, and let the military to get on with the job, instead of letting it being micromanaged by pillocks that have no idea of sound military tactics. (And its been happening for centuries! ) (Problem is, politicians don't always follow that. Eh Rumsfeld?) So, the role of 'CiC' is quite false in many ways. The 'CiC' is a civilian, and a head of state. So he really has the same powers as any other head of state. I suppose they came up with it just to sound good. I was not Bashing bush, only pointing out that he, unlike many other politicians have done (read: Vietnam, Bosnia, Somalia), doesn't meddle with the "how part", and act as if wars are a big game of risk. He simply dictates to the real heads of the military the specific objectives he want's carried out, and leaves them to carry those objectives out in the way they deem most appropriate. I've allways been a supporter of going into Iraq - WMD's or no WMD's.
