theavonlady 2 Posted October 19, 2003 Let's pretend that a great game came out whose MP interface only supported a pay-for-play server system. There's no private server support or LAN support. Assuming that: 1. the game is great, 2. the code is very stable, 3. tech support is supreme, 4. the game will be around for years to come, 5. the game is boxed and sells for around US$35-$40, 6. the game comes with an SP component as well, which of the above poll choices would you select? (No. This has nothing to do with OFP2 to the best of my knowledge, so don't panic). Constructive comments welcomed! Thanks for your participation.
Acecombat 0 Posted October 19, 2003 I WOULD NEVER EVER pay No siree the games price + Internet price then a server price for a laggy session ... no count me out Besides i dont have enough time for MP's especially with games such as OFP around and a few other RTS's i play. And besides WHY should we PAY ... whats the reason?
GoOB 0 Posted October 19, 2003 If ex. OFP2 came with a MMORPG like way of playing I would be willing to pay say 10 bucks a month. But I would not be willing to pay for playing OFP2 with standard maps etc. There would have to be something larger for me.
theavonlady 2 Posted October 19, 2003 I personally voted that I would be willing to pay 1 or 2 dollars per month but not more. This is on the assumption that: 1. the game is very good 2. the code and servers are reliable 3. the amount of time I could devote to it is more than once or twice a week. Otherwise, I wouldn't pay. FallenPaladin 0 Posted October 19, 2003 Right now I have no time for playing MP any more. I`d only pay per month for a very good online-game with excellent continuous software support.
theavonlady 2 Posted October 19, 2003 And besides WHY should we PAY ... whats the reason? Â Why should you pay for games in stores? Obviously this is a case where the developer/marketer feels they're product will entice you enough to pay. Once again, for the sake of this poll we're assuming that you would personally very much like the game.

And besides WHY should we PAY ... whats the reason?  The reason of this cost is to keep the servers running, the programmers wages (to eliminate bugs, and expand the game world) I would pay up to 10 dollars a month for a good online game, but I wouldn't have enough time to play it so it wouldn't be worth it RED

laulau 0 Posted October 19, 2003 i would never pay to play on line. It's not about money. I just want to be abble to play a game many years after i bought it. Once the servers are closed, no game anymore. Â it's sad...

But i would still feel that something's wrong with it. I understand that in such a case paying is necessary and normal, but i would feel like i'm "trapped"...that the future of the game depends too much on the company goodwill... perhaps, i'm too paranoiac anyway, if i would pay to play on line, i would pay one or two euros, not more. bonko the sane 2 Posted October 19, 2003 I wouldnt pay for online gaming. 1-Not much free time to do it. 2-By paying the game on cd I assume im paying for customer support/patches/ MultiPlayerGames /etc. 3-I do not trust my ISP to give me a decent lag free connection to a pay for play superserver thats running a really good game. P.S:As I stated in another thread the only $$$ I would possibly pay is for a FULL Mod with the whole "goodies"

Capitalists turds Anyhow i'd would pay if the amount is low enough but i dont wanna waste a fortune on just MP , i mean i dont wanna have a bill in which i could have easily bought 4-5 games otheerwise... Besides why wouldnt be thre ANY free servers available for it?

That's basically where a 1 or 2 dollar monthly fee comes in. Quote[/b] ]Besides why wouldnt be thre ANY free servers available for it? Obviously the developer/publisher wants to lock in players for more money and continuous revenue growth. The main purpose of this poll is to measure whether such a strategy is self-defeating. Acecombat 0 Posted October 19, 2003 Well its defeating it sure is ... i can tell you that. The majority of the world is on 56k and no one would pay up for a LAGGY session... if its free people would have a go yeah but paying on 56 k isnt suitable.

I was considering adding an academic assumption that everyone has a great ADSL connection but I decided not to, as each participant's real life WEB connection is an important factor in the poll's outcome. benu 1 Posted October 19, 2003 The game had to be very good for me to consider paying for it on a regular basis at all. Even then i wouldn't pay too much for it. And with very good i mean not only the game itself but the service you pay for. This means especially: - Cheater/TK/Flamer have to banned at once and permanently - there has to be a continuing "storyline" (mp campaign) to keep it fun even after months/years of playing - most of the game has to be changeable/votable by the community I can tailor my own server to my likings when i pay to get one. I expect nothing less when i pay to play on another ones server. The majority of the world is on 56k and no one would pay up for a LAGGY session... if its free people would have a go yeah but paying on 56 k isnt suitable. Is that really so? How do you define majority? I'd really like to see numbers on that one. You can only count ppl being online on a regular basis for that numbers. At least here nearly every second person has internet and nearly none of them has modem anymore, isdn/dsl all the way ;) And countries where very few ppl use the internet regularly and those who do use modem don't really add much to the count. So, to repeat myself, i'd really like to see some reliable numbers about that topic...
EiZei 0 Posted October 19, 2003 I wouldnt pay for mp which would be hosted on 3rd party servers, and restricting the mp only for official servers would be quite greedy IMHO.
Acecombat 0 Posted October 19, 2003 @ benu dude , i dont need to no number to acertain that , even if you throw th whole american/european population in the rest of the world isnt using adsl i can asure you and asian market is a bit bigger numerically (i think) considering their populations such as China, India ,Pakistan , and so on ..even middleeast. And the majority here uses 56k , now until unless youre making a game specifically for US / EU you have to be considerate of 56kers.
Winters 1 Posted October 19, 2003 I would pay to play a great game that was gonna be around for a long time, as long as it was a MMORPG i wouldnt want to pay anything for a "drop in and play a map then leave" game. I have Digital Cable so lag is not an issue for me.
hellfish6 7 Posted October 19, 2003 I clicked "I would refuse to pay", but I think that if I only had to pay to play online, and the game itself was free, then I'd pay up to $10 a month. I just don't like being charged twice for the same service. Of course, this wouldn't work very well with games that had single-player components.
Harnu 0 Posted October 19, 2003 I would pay the normal amount for the game, maybe a little bit more if it was really good. But if it is that good, and will be around for years to come, then I would only pay a low monthly rate. Because there would b so many people playing it, it would be a whole heck of a lot of money.
