Longinius 1 Posted October 20, 2003 I am currently playing two pay for play games, so I guess I am willing. It all depends on the game and what it has to offer.
ozanzac 0 Posted October 20, 2003 The question is more whether the suggested payment method, by monthly subscription, will work, versus just charging for the game at purchase time from the store shelf. Ahh, OK. But still no. It would have to be a bloody good and diverse game, like every concievable game all rolled up into one awesome/bugfree package. That would be my dream game. Then I'd consider it. But only if there was somewhere I could pay in person with cash to pay for the service. Like recharging a mobile phone on a pay as you go plan, go to a local store, and by credit. Quote[/b] ]Quote[/b] ]Fourthly, I wholeheartedly beleive the internet is free. It could be argued that the Internet is still free but the privately owned software and hardware running the servers isn't. A commercial establishment is providing a service, time and equipment that has nothing to do with your contract with your ISP and this establishment is entitled to be paid for it. That is not far-fetched. That is true. But I'm a consumer, and the consumer is always right! j/k. But I see your point. Mine is who really owns the internet, I think everybody does. I see it as a company floated on the share market, and everybody who pays to access it has a share in it. Those who host public servers just have a bigger share than most. To pay for additional services, such as online gaming, would be external to the shareholders of the internet. I'll give it a name. Extranet!, or even a hybrid of intranet (I know it's internal, but exclusive nonetheless!) and internet, interanet! It's arguable that paying for a net like service isolates it from the free net, thus it's no longer part of the net, but is associated to the net. But thats getting too far off topic. Quote[/b] ]Quote[/b] ]Thirdly, what would be my rights should ever the company running the gaming servers abuse their position. Chances are, at the worst, you're out $10. Again, just for the sake of this poll, the assumption is that the software, server and support quality is to your satisfaction. Whos to say they don't clean out my bank account!? They have my banking details depending on the method of payment! Thats assuming I don't make a special account to handle net based transactions. If the world was pefect, I wouldn't have to think of such scenarios, but it has happened before to others, so whos to say it won't happen to me? I suppose this just underlines my basic mistrust about the internet, thus I leave as many important details about myself away from the net as I possibly can. It's too public. And paying for gaming will ultimatly bring those two togeather, unless the anonyiminity comes back to it with tried and proven payment procedures. Oooh, and Avon, great thread! What price range is your max? Again, this is assuming it's a game you would really be interested in and the code, service and support is of good quality. BTW, if I may ask, what games are you currently subscribing to and what is their rate?
Placebo 29 Posted October 20, 2003 I decline to vote Basically I don't care about MP enough to pay for it
theavonlady 2 Posted October 20, 2003 I decline to vote Basically I don't care about MP enough to pay for it Well that's either a "decline in principle" or "other". So vote, you troll!

Longinius 1 Posted October 20, 2003 "Did you vote yet? What price range is your max? Again, this is assuming it's a game you would really be interested in and the code, service and support is of good quality." Yeah, I voted. I could easily pay 10 bucks if I think the game is worth it. I think my pain limit would be around 10 - 15. "BTW, if I may ask, what games are you currently subscribing to and what is their rate?" Currently Planetside and Star Wars Galaxies, at around 12 bucks or so a piece. And I have subscribed to loads of other games, like Ultima Online, EverQuest, Asherons Call, Neocron, Anarachy Online, Earth and Beyond, Eve etc. To me, its pretty cheap if the game is good. I like the appeal of massive worlds, with thousands of gamers in them. Sure, I'd prefer them for free, but its a business, there is a cost to development, servers and admins. So, I can dish out the bucks as long as I am having fun. When I am not having fun anymore, I quit playing, cancel the account and check out the next game. Longinius 1 Posted October 20, 2003 Quote[/b] ]Secondly, I would't like the method of payment, seeing as it would probably involve me giving bank and credit card details to parties other than me, my bank or a trusted financial manager. Not really. You can buy game cards in stores, that give you a code you enter. Much like cell phone refill cards. Quote[/b] ]Games could also consider doing what movies do today. That is, use brand name props, whether it's a Swatch watch, a Toyota car, a Samsung cell phone or Heinz ketchup. They have, problem is, most companies wont go for it. Games is still not considered serious business by other industries, even if they basically match the revenue from the music and movie inudstry. Quote[/b] ]1. What if a reasonable portion of the revenue went towards paying prize money to the games top players? Perhaps the games best 25% would not even have to pay for the following month. Been suggested to many of the developers and providers. However, the greedy mofo's wont go for it. They get loads of cash any way.

If this was an option of payment, paying for MP gaming is more attractive than through credit cards or paypal.
