Harnu 0 Posted October 8, 2003 Quote[/b] ]The GenetiCorp ConventionA resolution to reduce barriers to free trade and commerce. Category: Free Trade Strength: Strong Proposed by: The Global Market Description: WHEREAS: Cloning, a process that exists in nature in the form of identical twins is suddenly linked with reactionary fears of degrading respect for human individuality and violations of human rights, when humans discover that technology. Yet how would one’s rights to her/his individuality best be served? By allowing the individual to decide whether or not she or he would like to be cloned? Or by passing on the responsibility for that decision to a state? The right to decide whether or not you would be cloned is linked to that of the ownership of the individual over his or her own genetic code. Many Western societies are rushing towards a situation where those rights are massively being given up by the ‘moral majorities’ in those societies, to the state. Note that the right not to be cloned is also among those rights. Since future visions of a society with abominable human rights, are being also (over)used against cloning, let us present an alternative scenario. When a theoretical human right for individuality, becomes a human duty for individuality, you can ask yourself this question: ‘What sort of a state would possibly seek benefit from the absolute need to identify individuals by their genetic codes?’ This is the kind of state that will violate your human rights. This Convention defends the rights of the individual to ownership of, and therefore the (still theoretical) right to alter her or his genome, and more general his or her physical architecture. People who push for laws against genetic modification technology do not realize they are interfering with those rights. BE IT RESOLVED BY THIS HONORABLE UNITED NATIONS THAT: I. The United Nations shall issue a statement defending the ownership of the individual over his or her genome, and therefore the theoretical right to duplicate and/or alter it. If two people both possess the same genome, they will both have the right to duplicate and/or alter theirs. II. All international laws specifically directed against the development of any form of biotechnology of a civilian nature are hereby abolished. III. Individual governments shall reserve the right to restrict the research of biotechnology within their own nation, though scientists shall have the right to leave at any time they wish, except in cases of criminal activity, war, or imminent danger. IV. No nation nor the United Nations shall restrict the free flow of scientific information of a civilian nature, so long as such flow does not violate standing property rights. V. That cloned humans shall be accorded the same rights and as naturally born humans. Votes For: 1971 Votes Against: 1634 I voted for it. Drew, Joltan, agree? Or want to debate it get voting the way we all agree.

Plus every endorsment adds onem ore vote to when I vote for something. To increase your economy power depends on the issue you've got. joltan 0 Posted October 8, 2003 I voted for it, although only after some serious consideration. While I'm not in favour of human cloning, it also protects from corporations geting copyrights or patents on the human genome. Also it doesn't infringe national souvereignity by still allowing the nations to restrict this kind of research if they want to. I just had a similar issue decided to 'allow the research, but only under heavy governemental control'. The debates in the UN forum are always worth a read, too. Major Fubar 0 Posted October 9, 2003 Very unfortunate how you keep getting the same issues over and over again. It would be nice to ignore them, but the system is set up so you can only increase your population by answering issues.

Wilco 944 Posted October 9, 2003 Â The Empire of Modern War UN Category: Democratic Socialists Civil Rights: Some Economy: Reasonable Political Freedoms: Excellent Location: The North Pacific The Empire of Modern War is a tiny, pleasant nation, notable for its compulsory military service. Its hard-nosed, intelligent population of 5 million are fiercely patriotic and enjoy great social equality; they tend to view other, more capitalist countries as somewhat immoral and corrupt. The enormous government concentrates mainly on Law & Order, although Defence and Healthcare are on the agenda. The average income tax rate is 31%, but much higher for the wealthy. A large private sector is led by the Door-to-door Insurance Sales, Woodchip Exports, and Arms Manufacturing industries. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is relatively low, thanks to a well-funded police force. Modern War's national animal is the marine and its currency is the chang. http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin....ern_war EDIT: This just in! joltan 0 Posted October 10, 2003 Hint to all: if you want your economic power estimated (so you have a better guidance when bartering in the forums or estimating your military power) there's a great budget calculator available: www.pipian.com/stuffforchat/gdpcalc.php?nation=Joltania&defenseprovided=1&defense=1.5 The link above shows you the budget of my small nation Joltania, including military budget (I only spend 1.5% of the GDP in territorial defense). To get the stats for your own nation just replace the nations name (nation=...) with your own nation's and adjust the percentage figure for your military budget (last number in the url). Your tax rate and population are all read from your nations website and the results calculated according to the strength of your economy. Note that most of the budget is usually tied up in providing services and maintaining the governement. Check this thread in the NationStates forums for some background info. For my little nation this would return the following: <table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tr><td>Code Sample </td></tr><tr><td id="CODE">Joltania Gross Domestic Product Population: 18,000,000 Civil Rights: Very Good Economy: Strong GDP per Capita: $12,500 GDP: $225,000,000,000 National Budget: $60,693,300,000 Percentage of GDP Spent on Defense: 1.5% Percentage of Budget Spent on Defense: 5.56% Military Budget: $3,375,000,000 Enough for: 108 F-15Es, or... 168 Su-34s, or... 179 F-16s, or... 306 MiG 29s, or... 784 M1A2 Abrams, or... 1,125 T-90s, or... 5,759,385 M-16s, or... 11,250,000 AK47s
