I used to suck really, really bad at CSS but now I'm just mediocre, the trick is to stay cool, control recoil and stay with your team. You have to know when to move and when to crouch and only fire in two- or three round bursts at any range besides point-blank. You need a feel for when to move aggressively, often you can get the drop on your enemies by flashing and running at them while your teammates, the attackers, are cowering behind a wall begging you to take point. The attacking team is usually quite passive on large public servers, in my experience, they get too careful and actually let the defenders attack them, thus losing their advantage of being able to accomplish objectives to win.

I haven't received much smack talkin', except some time when someone with an unpronouncable 1337 name kept saying 'lol luck' and 'why r u alwais killin me from behnid PUSSY!?' when I killed him.

Also, be prepared for verbal abuse if you camp the objective you're supposed to defend. The defending team is always supposed to run as fast and far as possible to engage the attackers, at least according to most CS players. By the way you run much faster if you're holding a knife in your hands than if you're holding your primary weapon...

Here's my tips for general CS gameplay:

If you are defense, always keep moving when defending, never stay completely put but don't move too often.

Listen carefully to the noises, I know it sounds stupid but I swear if you listen well to the background noises and for footsteps, you'll save your life a couple of times.

Never assume corners are clear, ALWAYS treat each hiding area or corner as an enemy would be waiting to get a cheap kill.

Know your environment, get to know the maps well. In fact, I suggest you open a local game server up that will quickly rotate through the maps. If anyone else joins, tell them to bug off. Then explore the maps and analyze the battlefield, gives you time to think and plan.

Unless you have a shitload of enemies in front of you, always try to limit fire to 3 or 4 round bursts. If the enemy is far away, limit that to only 2 round bursts if you have a rifle.

Never assume it will be easy to get through a door or enter a hostage area, flashbang the room and get your teammates to clear it. (I know, many are too stupid or stubborn to coordinate well)

Try to get in the mentality of several different types of CS players (veterans, showoffs, noobs, cowards, campers, etc.). This will help you predict sometimes their behavior and also typical CS behaviour which might work to your advantage to know so you can get easier kills and attack or defend better.

Finally, if you are terrorists and you are keeping the ct's away from hostages in a good area to keep ct's suppressed, make sure you make them scared as much as possible to be aggressive. Lots of cover fire and frequent but timed fairly far apart HE and FB grenade attacks.

Most CS players just don't understand the power of an effective coordinated fire lane of massive rifle and smg fire. Most are too conservative with their ammo until they get in a bad situation, then spray like noobs and die quickly.

Avoid long corridors where snipers continously make well known their prescence. You should always have at LEAST a 3 man team against one sniper, all firing at the same time, making themselves a hard target to hit while attacking the sniper.

Final tip, use the cheaper rifles more often, it will allow you to keep more of your money and they are fairly as good as the more expensive m4's,ak's,and the scoped (non-sniper) rifles.

Last thing, the FAMAS has an excellently accurate burst fire mode that can be used by clicking on the right mouse button. In CQB, you need to switch it back to automatic. I suggest you not try to accurately attack an enemy with auto mode, as its slow fire accuracy is very poor.

This doesn't sound stupid at all? Listening to footsteps to get the enemy's position accounts for about half my kills, headphones are very important for this.

And yes, the FAMAS is terrific at long ranges, very easy to get headshots with those accurate bursts.

I remember when I first played the original CS. The only way I could get kills was by shooting people through walls with the Heavy Machine Gun. Although it was sweet getting a kill, it wasn't really satisfying. I would rather have seen my victim(or victims, if I was lucky ) fall. The only place I even remotely had a chance was a Newbie Server. It had a script that would kick anyone who got about 12 kills, 'to protect newbies'. Newbies generally find it very hard to get that amount of kills in a single round, even against other newbies.

I eventually stopped playing and moved onto TFC (I'm hoping they'll bring TFC:S out, sometime ). Not because of cheaters or 12-year-old geeks, but because I couldn't get anywhere in it. I guess I must have left just before the aforementioned cheaters and geeks arrived.

I haven't been able to get any multiplayer (besides half life MP, yuck) to work with steam. you don't have to pay for it do you? What happened to CS, DOD, and all the other great mods being free?

I tried some online games of Counter Strike to see what it was about, before the steam horrible machine came to power.

Honestly, i never wanted to play this mod after those few games .

Being constantly killed by people that are in majority less than half old as you are, is not really positive for your own moral

And the stupid insults as the major way of communication is not an argument in favour for me to try again this thing (then the steam philosophy is the final lock on this door i don't want to open again )

Game is high quality, atleast from the 2 or so levels I've seen so far (The roof top chase is amazing)

Graphics are sweet, this screenshot does not do full justice.

Edit:- I purchased the game via HMV in Manchester, was kind of disappointed that all it is a plain DVD case with just the DVD inside, no manual, leaflets or anything.
