How to convince people that ofp is the best?

Recommended Posts

Again, read my post from above.

The main thing that draws people to Medal of Honor(including me and most likely your friend) is that it has real German spoken in it.

Relate to him the fact that OFP also uses real Russian in it.

He will probably be very surprised to know this and will come to OFP for the same reason he loves Medal of Honor.

I know exactally what your talking about Winter, My friends will even watch me preview upon preview my missions but won't sit down and play them unless i offer them a beer.  I think sometimes it's a challenge thing.  In OFP the realism seems to get to people.  They like games that involve crazy weapons and nothing but long hallways of even wierder enemies.  That dosn't take to much thinking or strategy to win. biggrin.gif

Although i did get one person hooked on Ghost Recon...He's not so excited to try OFP but i will get him to like it soon enough!

Raptor, I understand what you mean about good graphics.

As for teamplayers. That doesn't matter for someone to learn and fall in love with the game.

I have always played OFP, and I have only played online like 10 times or less.

The beauty of this game lies in its single player.

The game itself, and mainly as I stated above, the autherntic Russian speaking.

I have the same problem, trying to get my mates to play.

I'd say one of the biggest problems is the way OFP is sold and marketed.

Quite a few of them have gone out and bought OFP 2nd hand, looked at the graphics of the old version, opened up AllSeeingEye, saw that there were only 50 or less servers, with fairly poor online play and decided its not worth it.

What they dont see is that the Resistance upgrade vastly improves graphics and netcode, making OFP a much better game.

They simply arent aware.

Why pay Å35-Å40 for the GOTY edition, when you can pick up OFP 2nd hand for Å10?

If Resistance had been sold as a stand alone game we would have a hell of a lot more players these days IMO.

BIS could have sold it as a Stand Alone package for newcomers to OFP, and a cheaper expansion pack version for people who had the original.

Though theyd have to work out some way to include the orignal campaign to teach the newcomers how to play/use vehicles/command troops etc, maybe remake the campaign or a slimmed down version for the new Island.

I think BIS missed a big Trick here, Resistance was more than just an expansion pack, it was a massive upgrade to the whole game and engine.

I know one guy who bought the GOTY edition, launched the old version of OFP, took one look at the graphics and server numbers and took the game back to the shop the same day.

I asked him if he looked at the Resistance version in the same package, and he hadnt bothered, he wasnt aware of the huge difference. sad.gif

Though it also has to be said that there are a large number of people out there who will never like this game, its just too complicated for them. All they want to do is turn on their PC, launch their Server browser, join a game, and just run around killing stuff. Tactics and realism have no place for these people. My best friend is one of them, I built his machine and installed 20+ games. He plays one : The Desert Combat Mod for Battlefield1942 because it requires very little thought or advanced knowledge to play.

I know one guy who took the game back to the shop because he couldnt bind the movements/actions to the same keys he uses in Quake!!!! mad.gif

i'm completely surrounded by CS players here. i often talked with them about OFP and all the possibilities and the feelings you get when you see a T80 passing by in a distance of only 4m. biggrin.gif

but they only go that way: "nah... the graphics are bad, you're just running around and never see the enemy, and you die immediately after you start to play, blah blah blah..."

but they never have played the game!! and it's hopeless to talk to them about it any longer! all you get is ignorance! but if they ever talk about CS with me they only complain about cheaters. then i say that i never see cheaters in OFP. but they just say that there is no game where you can't cheat and that even a bayonet-script in OFP, i told them about, is a cheat! i was trying to explain that you can't use those scripts in every mission. but the never listen and just say: "that's nonsense! i know more about scripts from CS and you're wrong!" tounge.gif sometimes i think that i'm the only sane human being around. biggrin.gif they think they know everything but nobody who plays only CS all the time knows everything!

One another reason why lots of people dislike OFP is because they don't understand it.

People really find it hard to believe or even understand the idea that the game is really open and free. It is difficult for them to understand that the game is virtually a parallel to real life.

If you can think of it in real life, you can probably execute it in Operation Flashpoint.

You can't really blame them, I mean a game like OFP is unique, and is hard to understand after playing DOOM and Medal of Honor where the player is lead through a "play" through "acts" and "scenes" where everything is scripted.

This is one the the biggest hurdles in trying to explain someone the game.

It wasn't until about a week or so into when I first started playing the game until I realised the scope of the game.

It is more a soldier "simulation" than a game.

And gameplay shows for it.

I will be the first to admit that the game is not "fun", it is actually quite "boring".

That is because it is a simulation of real life soldiering.

The only "fun" to be derived from the game is in the knowledge that one is succesfully completing a challenging mission using all your skill, wit, strategy, and cunning.

That gives me a great deal of pleasure and satisfaction.

That is the only thing that is "fun" or "satisfying" about the game.

This inherent aspect of this "soldier sim" automatically shows the type of mentality required to play the game.

Not a mentality of doing this to have "fun", no.

A mentality that gets satisfaction from succesfully completing missions using your cunning and strategy.

The only mission that I would consider "fun" to play is "Operation Clean Sweep".

All this is secondary to the fact that they speak REAL Russian in this game. That is very authentic to me. smile.gif

Wouldn't worry about the beer up here, In canada the beer flows like water running out of the Rocky mountains tounge.gif

And Avon, i think i'm going to have to buy Res. I'm giving in...I just hope it'll work on my computer. I doubt it tho, but whatever...I'll give it a shot. It has the all the same requirements right?...I'll just have to delete everything else on my computer.

HEY! and that way i can give OPF Cold War to my friends to try out! BONUS!

One of my friends couldn't figure out how to beat the Steal The Car mission because they thought that the objective should always be where the WP was. Even though he saw the UAZ it just never crossed his mind that maybe the UAZ was what he was looking for. He thought it was a bug in the game confused.gif Its just hard to believe that people can think so narrowly. Also shows that some people don't recongise the value of reading the briefings either.

OFP just isn't for everyone...

Yeah, I had that same problem when I first started.

I saw the UAV, but I was looking for the car at the waypoint.

After a while I learned to use common sense.

Thats what I have heard too is that its boring, not that it really is boring ,its just that alot of missions it takes time to get there or setup and wait.

And in some mp games that dont spawn, when you die you have to wait for the next game, or thats how it was the last time i played mp.

I do like the single player experience and OFP has that, but the mission editor is what sold me at first,I like making things!

I've been gaming for years and some of the most rememberable intense gameplay has been in OFP.Nothing like trying to hide from a tank with nothing to destroy it, maybe try to seek out your dead law soldier if you couldnt keep him alive

Sneak in  a base to destroy a rack of tanks, but option of using their own tank against them, too cool, peeps don't know what they are missing!

When I show people the game it usually is that Steal The Car mission, I've done it so much now.

I can purposly stir the enemy up and still take them all out,lol

[TU]$33ker, where I am its quite the opposite.

At the LAN center I go to, people play CS every day all day, and they were really amazed when I installed OFP onto one of the PC's. Graphics werent even mentioned, they were just bewildered by the fact that you could fight realistic battles with squads in realistic terrain.

Im currently waiting for the LAN center to buy 20 copies of it to install on the PC's there for some wicked games.

See, not all CS peeps hate OFP smile.gif (I play CS now too, have done for 2 weeks, its good as a break from OFP)

I don`t see reasons why I should convince CS kiddies to play OFP. Normally those guys really get on my nerves when playing MP. They bother the admin with their "GOGOGOGOGOGO!!!", always want to fly the choppers with guided missiles, are to dumb to follow mission objectives and shoot everything that moves no matter on which side.

E.g. yesterday me and some squadmates played BF1985 public for some fun. I was approaching Heitlingen from the north, holding the enemy down. Some friendly guy was on the church hill north of me. Suddenly I`m under fire from both sides: the russians in Heitlingen are shooting at me, so is that moron north of me. I manage to kill the russians but that idiot manages to wound my legs with 15-20 shots (accurate, huh? wink.gif ) . Next thing is Fallen crouching in Heitlingen, defending it cursing like a russian sailor over Gamevoice.

Another funny incident, also BF1985:

I captured as US soldier an enemy T80 and was attacking Modrava. To prevent friendly fire I wrote over side channel: "im in t80 heading modr", "t80 is me, dont shoot me" and so on. I gave that information four times before I took the flag in Modrava! Was pretty fighting in there with lots of explosions. A friendy M2A2 was shooting with his machinecannon. I had the flag and was pulling back, when I realized that I still was under fire. It was the M2A2 shooting at me. Slightly angry and nervous I send over side channel: "t80 in modrava is me, stop shooting m2". He kept shooting. It became hot inside my tank... "m2 stop firing at me, im on your side!!!" The armor of my tank is becoming read, I begin to curse over Gamevoice and write again over sidechat. "m2 stop firing or ill killya. last warning!!!" That idiot continues shooting, so I drive heavily damaged towards him, because my barrel is broken. He panics driving downhill across my route so I get a shot at him and kill him. Afterwards I send a short message over side chat "i warned you, you idiot. check the map next time and listen!" Exactly in this moment he starts cursing and calling me bastard, idiot, n00b, loser, ... ... crazy.gif

No, I really don`t want more CS kiddies in OFP!!

How old was this guy? 12? Another idiot with a 12-year-old punk mind! It's blatantly obvious that you don't want to be shot at. If it was me in the M2A2, then I would apologise and stop shooting.

With no assholes on it, OFP really comes into it's own when on MP. Just grab some friends and play a co-op/deathmatch with them. But if you haven't got any friends wink.gif , then the computer gives a real mean challenge!

I`m a clan-player so it`s no problem for me to play a good MP game with either my clanmates or another clan as enemies. But sometimes you simply want to have some fun playing public. That`s when those nuts show up  wink.gif  tounge.gif

And with a lot of MP training the SP isn`t a challenge any more. The AI is kinda too static. biggrin.gif
