that goes for any tattoo smile.gif

the legion's motto and stylised legion 'nade and Fennec desert fox are permanent on my skin smile.gif (i regret it now because even if they look "cool" and make people talk , they are marks of my past life and don't always go well with my actual job and missions and i tend to wear a T-shirt in summer on the beaches , the Fennec is a little bit too big smile.gif )

i never seen a USMC bulldog tatoo myself , that has to look nice

actually , i used to feel safer when i had a real combat knife in my pack , because even if leatherman and other tools of that kind are nice , there are still a few things you can't do with those .. or at least , not correctly and tidily .... if you see what i mean ...

Not hard to believe that people look at you in a weird way on the beach biggrin.gif

No doubt about it, i've never seen ears that big compared to the rest of it's body...

Another tip: Don't train too much before going to boot camp. You risk getting periostitis and that's a sure ticket out.

Oh yeah, tatoos: don't get them, you'll regret it. I have a small trident tatoo that I got in the service and I wish that I hadn't. Probably going to remove it one day...

shin splints bro

they're pretty simple to prevent- when you train, always have respect for your legs. Don't stop on a dime, don't try and go from zero to 60 too often if you aren't conditioned for it; that sort of thing. But once you get it, damn does it hurt.

Yea, shin splints suck ass. I'm going into the army in 4 days, and i've been training for about 4 weeks now. The first week was good, felt good to start working out again. Then the next week i went for my morning walk (i walk in the morning and run at night) and i couldn't make it around the block, literally. I had to take a few days rest, which sucked. Take it slow, take nice long walks for a week. Then slowly work your way into running. You say you are in the buddy program? Then make sure you and your friend work off of and support each other, should make it much easier. And get some running shoes too, although they told me not to buy running shoes before i join (because they will give me personally fit ones when i get there) ya need em to run correctly. A simple $20 pair from Payless or something should do, thats all i did.

And remember, don't run directly after eating. Make sure you wait around 2 or so hours, thats about how long i wait. Trust me, you'll be needing that energy. And if you run wihtout your food digesting you'll be feeling those hotdogs bouncing up and down in your stomach, not a pleasant feeling. wink.gif Good luck man. Although i'm in the Army and you the Marines, i'm glad you chose to join a service and help protect your country, stand tall, and be proud. smile.gif

Just thought I'd add my "good luck". I'm just a squid, so I can't give you any tips for "real" bootcamp.

Definately go with what E6Hotel said and get in Navy Federal when you have the chance.

Also, don't get rid of your car if you have one. Chances are you'll be stationed stateside and can get ahold of it later.

For your workout routine, once you're confident with running, start with wind sprints. This will help your stamina if you don't have any hills or beaches nearby, and you'll be doing it alot during squad runs. biggrin.gif

Just listen. Pay attention to what they're telling you. It isn't rocket science and numerous dumbasses have managed to get through before you. They are telling this shit for a reason though so take it onboard.

Do you know what your MOS will be?

Once again, good luck. Look forward to seeing you out in the fleet.

1) Run

2) Push-ups

3) Pull-ups

4) Flutter Kicks & Mountain Climbers

5) Start calling everyone you know now Sir or M'am.

6) Memorize the rank system now

7) Memorize the General Orders now

8) Remember that everything they tell you to do no matter how silly it sounds is to teach you something. On a daily basis they may be telling your to say "Snap!" as you turn your head right or "Pop!" as you turn it left. For someone unfamiliar with Naval tradition it may seem nonsense, for others it will make perfect sense.

9) None of the DI's are after anyone person on a personal basis. Just some people are easier to remember and it's how the game is played. Don't take it personal.

10) If overweight, start losing it now.

11) Practice the ASVAB test now (do they still give this thing or some other?) from a book at a local library, speed is the key, and better score could mean the difference in getting an MOS or your choosing.

I'll think of more later.

</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">Smoking is a privledge that must be earned first, so if you are a smoker i highly recommend stopping now before you are forced to stop in boot. You will already have plenty of stress to deal with, no need in compounding that with the stress you will get from nicotine withdrawals.

<span id='postcolor'>

He he he he......

There were a bunch of smokers in my platoon during basic training, we always got in shit for cigarette butts lying around. As things got strict, they made the smokers write their names on the butts, when that failed, they prevented the smokers from buying cigarettes, it was funny to see them pissed over something so trivial, to me anyways.

</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">5) In the field, beef jerky and sunflower seeds are your friends.<span id='postcolor'>

Scooby snacks rock! Sunflower seeds are good to pass the time at an OP, just don't spit the seeds everywhere. BBQ flavored are my personal favorite, Dill Pickle is up there too.

As for shooting, I was always into target shooting with my pellet rifles when I was younger, I still do it. I was the top shot on both of my courses. Though I never touched a 'real' rifle until I got in, but there was nothing they told me that I didn't already know in a basic sense.

As for 'shin-splints' avoid them at all costs, they hurt....alot. wink.gif

As for going places, yeah, I got a call last week asking me if I wanted to go to Kabul, Afghanistan, under the U.N. My name is in the system, but it's too early to tell if I'm going or not.

Pins, good luck with the Army. smile.gif

xmurderx, good luck with the Marines. smile.gif

Remember:

Army = HUA!

Marines = Hoo-ra! tounge.gif

Smoking while in training is one of the better ways of building up a stamina.  The nicotine binds to the oxygen molecules (actually it binds to the hemoglobine molecules that would bind O2, but never mind) forcing your system to work with less O2. It's the same principle that pro runners and skiiers use when they train at high altitudes.<span id='postcolor'>

It's not the nicotine that binds to hemoglobin and blocks the absorption of oxygen, but the carbon monoxide in the smoke. biggrin.gif Carry on...

The ears are heat sinks. Lots off blood vessels in the ears, which leads to cooling of the blood, which leads to cooling of the animal.

Ok wait. You said that you signed papers, but you didn't take the asvab yet?! I don't think i signed anything before i took the asvab. And, you don't know if you even passed it yet to eve be able to join. Granted the test isn't hard, but still, the fact remains. Hmm, are you getting false "good lucks" ? confused.gif
