whisperFFW06 0 Posted February 4, 2003 I bump this thread because I've observed something very strange with it. First of all, incredible job, thanks to DKM team. I read the entire post to see if someone mentionned what I've seen, but no go. So here it is : I run a Linux dedicated server, and for using in a multiplayer/multiplatform campaign we are currently running, I installed DKM Comanche. Some days later, while checking the log files of the server, I've seen something that I've not seen done by any 3rd party material in OFP : at server startup, this is written in the logs : DKM_MOD nothing else, just DKM_MOD, after which the logging continue as usual, but I stress on the fact that this is the only addon doing that, and AFAIK the only 3rd party material (addon, island, mission) doing so. And being able to write something in the log is something I sought for a long time, it is a holy grail for running a MP campaign. So, a little question to DKM team : do you have any idea of how this is done? (I think so, reading this in my logs ) Whis' PS : After having read through the entire post, I can't wait for your Mi28. And about weapon damage, I think the problem is more on the armor side, which is not accurately enough reproduced. It is not a weapon issue.
Dark Knight 0 Posted February 4, 2003 ok F.Y.I when u creat a waypoint for this chopper when its on the ground and it has new fuel in it it will do the downwash with the engine off and the dust just get thicker and thicker and my computer just gets slower and slower.. this happens in a matter of minutes and i have got a fast Computer *GLITCH!*

PS: Can some of the guys who had trouble to see any dust effect at all pm me.
~Too Tall~ 0 Posted February 4, 2003 umm question. .can we manualy take out that dust script via ccp file?. . .cuz i got a much better dust script id like to use with it. . less lag too
Rastavovich 0 Posted February 4, 2003 The dust script will get some extra work (I now use Vektorbosons method to find height asl, which should decrease the cpu requirements). But maybe I will also add the option to deactivate them completly by an global variable.
whisperFFW06 0 Posted February 5, 2003 One last question : Does the dust script checks for local player? So that it does not run on dedicated server, only on clients? Drop command on dedi may cause CPU stress (as stated by Kegetys for his snowfall effect on winter Nogojev). Whis'
KaRRiLLioN 0 Posted February 5, 2003 Would it be possible to make the dust script be deactivated by default? I'd prefer to turn it on instead of having to remember to stick in a var for every mission. I like the dust, but for some reason it doesn't seem to work on several other missions. That also includes Vektorbosen's script because I tested it as well. Something is wrong in the drop command, and I don't know if it's an addon conflict or what that causes it, but on some missions I get an error in the drop command, however if I make a mission with only the Commanche in it, then it works just fine.
Gen.Carnage 0 Posted February 5, 2003 in my opinion, more people are benefitting from having it on by default as opposed to having it off. The missionbuilder will have to go thru some extra work, but the 'real' mission makers wont have any problem with that. The majority of people dont know much of scripting and init commands, they just drop some units into a map and start playing. they want to see the dust. The moment they are getting into problem because of too much lag they will come back and start complaining, but if we release it with default dust off, an even bigger horde of people will chase us with pitchforks and strings of rope. No matter what we choose we'll allways make the wrong choice according to some people. It just comes down to this basically: get a powerfull enough pc to play this heavy 3d game... people with P2 300 systems have no business trying to run this game, and expect to see rotorwash dust and all other great effects during a MP game with 20, 30 or more of these vehicles. the facts are that nowadays computergames are requiring more and more cpu/gpu power, we are attempting to upgrade an existing game to the current levels of detail/realism by making addons that move the game in that direction. At least we attempt to do so. The consequences are that slower systems will not be able to keep up with that, so should we stop developing new features for that reason? i think not
KaRRiLLioN 0 Posted February 5, 2003 I'm not worried about it from a performance standpoint. I just get annoyed at that script error that pops up at the top of the screen every time it tries to create the dust on some missions. Like I said I've tried vektorbosen's script as well and get the same error. I don't know if it's a confict with another addon, or what. If I put the Commanche in a mission by itself, then the dust normally works fine. I have put it in some missions that have other addons, however and then an error in the drop command starts spamming at the top of the screen. It's too long to see what the error entails, however. When I have time, I'll try to figure it out, but it happens on all islands. The addons that are used in my missions are: DKM - OV-10 Bronco, 26m Tunguska, M109 ADATS, Commanche BAS - Littlebirds (res) F18 Hornet by Hudson F-15 Strike Eagle by deadsoldier and US Marine KLR-250 motorcycle by SelectThis Dragonfly
Rastavovich 0 Posted February 5, 2003 What version of OFP are you running?
Gen.Carnage 0 Posted February 5, 2003 @ KaRRiLLioN: those 3rd party addons are allmost all west (except the tunguska)... what on earth are they fighting? q: how do you recognise people that write ofp scripts too much? A: in their typing, a tendency to double certain letters that shouldn't be there is clearly noticeable.. coMManche instead of comanche, paLLadin instead of Paladin, daMMage instead of damage... and some more i cant remember right now.. annyway, wait for the 1.1 release of comanche to see if your problem is fixed. KaRRiLLioN 0 Posted February 5, 2003 I'm running version 1.91. Heh, I have to remind myself how to spell damage at times after using GetDammage, etc. The reason there are almost all west addons is because those are the only addons that I've deemed worthy enough thus far. I'm aching to get some good quality Soviet helos, jets and other addons, but the ones I've seen so far are not that great. The only Mig's I've seen just needed too much improvement to be any good, and the Mi26 I saw is obviously no match for a Comanche, lol. In other words, aside from a large monster Mi26 addon, I haven't seen much done for the east. I'm hoping that DKM can rectify that. =) I know that deadsoldier and US Marine are working on a soviet jet as well. Right now I use the addons in RTS-3 and a several bombing missions, etc. I LOVE bombing missions. The OV-10's are awesome. The Comanche is one of the best addons ever, but it's an overmatch for most other vehicles. Thus, East and West both use em. =) Also, I get annoyed from that constant error at the top of the screen. Anyway, I'm looking forward to the new version and hoping it fixes my issues. Let me post a link to one of my missions and you can try the Comanche and see the error I'm talking about. Here's the link to a CTF on the desert isle. The only addon in it is the Comanche. Otherwise there are tanks, helos and such in it all official ones though. http://www.aggression.org/karr/test.zip I hope this helps. BTW all other players on my dedicated server also report seeing this error on this mission. However, on another mission that I have which is a coop and has a similar variety of vehicles on it, including BAS's Littlebirds, the dust works fine. That mission is on Malden. I have seen this error occur on all the island though.
KaRRiLLioN 0 Posted February 6, 2003 I decompiled the .pbo and looked over the duster.sqs script in there just to make sure that I wasn't using a global var that your script was using, but I didn't see any global vars. Â I just sort of scanned over it, so I could be mistaken; otherwise, that doesn't appear to be the case. The mission I posted in my previous post has no other addons besides the Comanche. Â I'll switch the mission over to some of the other regular islands to confirm the issue. Â This is very odd.
Rastavovich 0 Posted February 6, 2003 It would be really strange you had by accident a global variable called like one out of our scripts, since all those globals are "dkmm" tagged. Could you pm me your ICQ number, so we could do some tests with an updated script?
