Col. Kurtz 0 Posted March 7, 2003 Right, tommorow I shall march out and (maybe) buy a joystick. What do you think is better, a Micro$oft Sidewinder Presicion Pro 2 or a Logitech thing (I like Logitech, I have a MX500) with that twisty handel (non force-feedback model, I'm not made of money)? Opinions welcome. Of course at the end of the day I DECIDE I'm looking for the stick that will let me tame IL-2 and FB on realistic settings (by that I mean be able to shoot down a plane that it isn't a lumbering bomber  ) I'm fine when all realistic physics are off, I can really fly a plane them, and rake up the kills. But I want to go into a broader universe...

This may be fun to try but not really interesting. Weight of the bombs is not all, the type cares more ( and for submunitions cans, roquets ) ... This is why I said for this point of view is shamefull. Devceloppers followed the loudder or most whinning players and worked for dogfight point of view. The air to ground sim now really sucks comparatively to the rest of the game. See the HUGE difference from the Il-2 first release and what it became with patches, and now FB. Quite nothing ( except 190A5 loads ) for the ground attack. I will be trully disgusted if the next patches do not pay attention to ground warfare and loadouts. I would really advise you to get force feedback...I can't fly effectively without it anymore! but I know it's not cheap. WhoCares 0 Posted March 7, 2003 I don't know, whether my machine (AMD TB900, SD512MB, GF2GTS) will be able to handle FB properly. It already struggles now with IL2, eg. while fighting over Sevastopol... I am considering to get me a new Graphic Card, a Ti4200. It just seems to be imposible to find 4xAGP cards with this chip anymore. I don't benefit from 8xAGP (not supported by the MoBo) an I wonder whether there is any difference in the price between those... About my stick, it's among the cheapest of the cheapest (Tevion/Aldi; the germans know what I mean). While I am not sure, whether I would have it easier with a more sophisticated stick, I like its layout, with throttle, coolie hat and three fire buttons (cannon, rockets, bombs) easy accessable with the thumb. I don't like the idea with thottle and buttons on the foot like with the sidewinder, as it forces my left hand always to switch between joystick and keyboard... But I guess all this won't make me a better pilot anyway. I got the game ~3weeks ago. After 40 missions as a russian fighter pilot, I scored 52 victories with 35 crashes Okay, about 10 of those crashes were bad landings and 75% of the victories were Junkers or Heinkels... And screw those campaign designers, that sat me in a P39 after I got familiar with the La5FN Â
Tex -USMC- 0 Posted March 7, 2003 One thing I have noticed is that AA and AAA fire has improved its accuracy. Dramatically. You can't ignore ground fire any more- well, you can, but I wouldn't reccomend it. I'd be playing this game non-stop, but the Raven Shield demo has me doing my damnedest to create a tactical plan so foolproof that even the AI (which is improved, but still kind of dopey) can execute it with something approaching 80% efficiency. Frustrating, but fun- I've learned alot about how the AI functions and that the most effective way to kill large numbers of terrorists is a 3-point breach entry . dayglow 2 Posted March 7, 2003 lol, I saw a thread on the IL2 board where a guy gets vulchers with a Pe8 w/5000kg bomb. The vulchers can't resist the big, juicy target a lumbering bomber gives them and when they dive down to attack he drops the bomb from really low alt. No one escapes the blast Tex, how much ram does your system have? I've seen reports that 512 seems to be the acceptable min with the game and 1024 is a lot better. Interested to know if I should start saving for another stick of ram. COLINMAN
Tex -USMC- 0 Posted March 7, 2003 640 mbs of RDRAM. You can credit OFP for that little upgrade lol. Currently, the weakest link in my PC is the CPU, which is just a 1.3 Ghz P4. My GeForce 3 is getting a little crotchety, but it must not be that bad if I can still run most games with high detail AND anti-aliasing. Not bad for a card that's over two years old. Having all that RAM kicks ass though; I think I've heard my hard drive kick in maybe 3 times in the past month  Incidentally, if I do suddenly decide to buy a new 3D card (in the $200-300 price range), what should I go for? If so, damn pretty much anything Seriously I'd wait a month or so so that the GFfx is released and Ati releases it's 9800 (r350 core) That should cause a really nice price drop in the 9700pro. You should be able to pick it up then. Damn a 1.3 P4? Didn't know they made them that low I'd think for a ofp/il2 that a stronger cpu would make a huge difference, much more than a gc would. Myself I've seen a big leap when I went from a 1.4 to 1.8 amd chip. COLINMAN
Warin 0 Posted March 7, 2003 The only problem for poor Tex is that if he's got a 1.3, it's likely in the original P4 packaging, not the current Northwood package. Aaron Kane 0 Posted March 7, 2003 Well I just witnessed a Lagg3 do a 90 degree pass on a Ju52, guns blazing. All his rounds appeared to hit, and he flew away. It also seems that the AI does some ridiculously hard head on shots with ungodly high accuracy. I'll go check the Il2 forums and see if this has been mentioned... if not, I'll sit around and mope/pout.
