The Forgotten Battles

The use of rudder can be a major asset in a dogfight. A bit of side slip can throw a bandits aim off, plus snapping the tail over becomes far easier.

I also rely on the rudder for landing. Some of those A/C do not bleed speed well, and I prefer to make my approach as quickly as possible. If your speed is too high, simply apply rudder, and level the wings with the stick. You'll continue along the same heading, but losing airspeed rapidly. (Beats ripping the flaps off when your at the VNE)

The German birds are better for learning the basics for this, as they have a turn/slip indicator.

Flyin under a bridge isnt that difficult. In ofp i can fly under the davle bridge with Keges hawk, upside down.

Nuff said... you're comparing Extreeme stunt cycling to being able to ride a bicycle with training wheels biggrin.gif.

OFP is an awesome infantry simulator, but make no mistake, it's no flight sim.

P.S., awesome screenshot DayGlow smile.gif.

Thats just what i mean ofp is not a flight simulator its an infantry simulator. I think in IL2 its much more easyer because the controls are more stable. Try flyin Keges hawk with joystick and you'll understand what im talkin about =)

The only games I have installed on my comp are OFP (with Resistance), IL-2,and Falcon 4. Il-2 and OFP are the two I play most. I have Kege's Hawk. My Extreeme stunt cycling/bicycle with training wheels comparison still holds smile.gif

I'd agree with you. OFP is very frustrating to fly. The helicopters sideslip like crazy when you turn and the planes (only flown the A-10 and SU-25) are mushy. Still inverted low level flying in Il2 isn't a piece of cake either. You are constatly on the verge of redout and everything just feels weird. For that stunt you do need rudder though, because direction change is impossible with the stick. You need to stomp the rudder and keep the wings level or else you're taking a swim. Amazing thing about this sim is later on during that stunt flying I tried going under 2 bridges in a row inverted, under the second I dipped my vertical stabilzer into the river and it didn't flip me over. It went in and out with foam and everything smile.gif But the second time I touched the water I ended up in it.

I hate that kind of phrase when u make suggestions or mention anything like planes regarding OFP its the same type of thinking that gets u the "jip will bring in lamers" in multiplayer threads.

Is the keg`s hawk the nippy plane with the sidewinder missiles? Its like whee and rolls more like a real plane biggrin.gif

For the IL-2 videos I really liked the one that came in 3rd place, I think it was the best one. I liked how it was almost like a documentary.

Tje one that came in 1st place was really just 'Deutschland Uber Alles' and while it had some good footage, a bit unexciting when the Luftwaffe just destroyed plance after plane.

It exceeded the length requirements. Anyhow, I've been checking through those guys training films, and am going to model my BnZ after their style: a few solid maneuvers, a big-ass engine, and a Mk108 30mm cannon smile.gif

Can someone give a rundown of the different planes characteristics in il2.

I usually stuck to just one of them and used hit and run tactics with the cannons to shoot down stuff then i tried the yak plane and the stupid thing kept crashing during take off tounge.gif

I-153 & I-16: nimble but slow, in addition to having relatively weak armament.

Mig 3 Series: good planes if you know how to use them. Spin easily, and Soviet regulations require that all Mig 3s must be soaked in avgas before each mission.

LaGG Series: don't really know about these planes. I guess they're okay, but don't really know.

La-5: nimble little bugger. Some people think it's well armed, but I consider well armed to mean at least 2 machine guns and two (big) cannons.

Yak Series 1 through 7: Solid aircraft. Good speed and excellent maneuverability, but generally lightly armed, in addition to being outperformed by later models.

Yak 9 Series: imo the best Soviet fighter. Although some models are still too lightly armed, one model (the 'K' I think) has a big-ass 37mm cannon in the nose that absolutely rocks the house.

ME-109 Series: Probably the best combination of speed, maneuverability, armor, and armament in the game for all respective periods. Although it can't take a good Russian pilot in a turning battle, it can outclimb, outdive, and outrun almost all equivalent Russian counterparts. Oh yeah, and it has lots of guns.

FW-190 Series: Only the best boom and zoomers can use this plane well. It's fast, it is armed to the friggin teeth, can roll as well as any plane in the game, and is well armored, BUT: it turns like a drunk cow, and in Il-2 that is a death sentence against the nimble Russian Yaks and La-5s. That being said, there's nothing better for shooting down bombers and flying air to mud missions. I just wish it could turn a little better.

That's a big change from "flying coffin" wink.gif.

Anyways here's my view of the most popular Russian fighters (My experience flying the German types is very limited):

I-16: Very maneuverable, but beware - tends to roll into a dive when you stall during a tight turn. Slow. Also very durable. Do not turn off engine in flight! It has no engine starter biggrin.gif.

Lagg-3: Maneuverable, well armed, durable, but looses energy too quickly. few people fly it, and then it's usually the 37mm cannon armed tank-busting variant

MiG-3: Maneuverable, lightly armed, will combust at the first opportunity (no kidding, I like a variant of this plane, but everytime I feel a hit, I check to see if I'm on fire).

La-5FN: Widely viewed alongside the Yak-9T as the best newbie plane. Does everything well except roll, you can have the engine on War Emergency Power for 10 mins before it causes damage (this seems to be an error, in the game) but is accurate for the La-7. And 2 20mm cannon in the nose is all the armament you should need

Yak-9T: Along with the Yak-9K and Me-109G6 with MK108, This is the game's "Noob Cannon". The 37mm gun is incredibly accurate, low recoil, and 1 shot will kill 90% of the time. Also very maneuverable and fairly durable. Engine overheats before long if you don't watch it in all Yaks, and they all  also have pretty poor climb performance.

Yak-9K: Same as above, but with a 45mm cannon. However recoil is a bit more noticeable.

Yak-3: The last of the Yak series, and my baby in late war servers smile.gif (yes the numbering system is confusing) Basically a modernized Yak-1 stripped down of as much weight as possible. It's the best-turning plane in the game, and although acceleration and climb are anything but spectacular, it is very energy efficient once it builds it up. Lightly armed with 2 12.7mm MG's (the same one's on my favourite MiG-3 variant) and one 20mm cannon, but this makes for very little recoil, and for very good accuracy) smile.gif

P-39: The early types are very well armed with a 37mm cannon (not NEARY as accurate as the one on the Yak 9T or as the German Mk108) and lots of MG's. Spins extreemely easily though if you're not careful. Later versions cut down on the number of machine guns, but are less susseptible to spin. It's tricky to land if you're used to the other planes, because it's the only one with a modern type with a modern trycicle landing gear.

Actually, you guys chose the Yak-3's over the Yak-9's, and in real life, the tankbusting Yak-9T and anti-ship Yak-9K were usually used on ground attack/anti-shipping missions smile.gif.

Bf109G6 and late are the most undermodelled planes in the sim. Can't climb, can't turn, can't do anything. The AS is a different story, but stay away from the G6. Only redeeming feature is the 108 you can put in the nose, but that even kills the performance more.

Fw190A5 is an execellent stall fighter if you use it correctly. Just drop to landing flaps and keep the speed around 200 and just ttttuuuurrrrrnnnn. Then go clean and accerate like crazy and have a great climb. One of the best fighters to fly if you can do it correctly (not me, I can kill the ai, but online I suck tounge.gif ) But at the same time the 190 has the worst cockpit visablity of any plane, unless you really like looking at your insterments.

My personal favourite plane in the game would have to be the Yak-9U. I'm not really 'get the biggest cannon possible' person. I prefer concentrated fire-power over just one big slow firing cannon. The exception is bombers and large transport planes. You basically have to have a cannon of at least 37mm calibre to take down a Me-323 without having to fire every single bullet you have at it.

Just another thing, I was looking at the IL-2 Forums and there was a thread 'do you shoot bailed out pilots?'

I'm just interested to see if anyone here regularly shoots parachutes or the pilots beneath them.

I think I did it once or twice, but I never do it now on purpose.

1). It is not very moralistic

2). Waste of Ammo

3). If there are other enemy planes, there are better things to do.

In real life, if I shot down an ace, lets say the best around and he/she bailed out, I would not shoot them as they parachuted to the ground. I would rather take the chance of being shot down and possible killed by them another day, then to shoot them in cold blood.

Does anyone know what the deal is with the FW190's low speed and flaps extended flight characteristics? Dont get me wrong, I love this plane, its my favorite one thats currently modelled, but would a FW190 really turn so well with its flaps extended like that? Or can we expect this ability to be taken away once FB comes out?

In other news, I've heard a rumor that the FW190's E-bleeding will be reduced to a more realistic level in the future. And I certainly hope it is true smile.gif
