Adobe is offering many of their CS2 software for FREE for PC and Mac.

I can easily see how it would progress. Use a stable (not hacked, no virus risk) Photoshop for a year or so ..... get used to it ..... then seriously consider buying the real thing.

no, cause price of Photoshop is too expensive comparing to salaries in other parts of the world than you live, i will use east europe as example, Photoshop here costs 2600 PLN (850 USD, 1300 AUD, 550 Euros) , while usual men earn 1700 PLN per month (+consider 30% unemployment among young people in some parts of the world), so noone will buy software for which you must work for 2 months without eating and paying for flat, in Belarus, Ukraine for legal Photoshop you have to work for 4 months - it is mad (not even saying about African states)

if software was 20-30% of monthly salary , not 170% many people would buy it , in east europe people thought that Adobe made gift, now only problem is how to treat it, cause in case of control of sotware many will claim that it was given for free (many made screenshots of page as a proof)

That's just one group of people though, and probably not the ones Adobe is aiming for. A whole bunch of others may do exactly as Gnat said.

Not everyone lives in eastern Europe you know.

most of the above sales are made by companies and not individuals. the ones working in this digital graphics industry as freelancers, be it 2d or 3d, in eastern Europe or otherwise, do have the means to purchase a commercial license without a problem, covering their investment in 3-4 month of work (not calculating here all the profit or money needed for day by day living - food, rent, other expenses).

for offices and businesses in the same area, 50$/seat/month for the entire creative bundle is peti cash without a doubt.

understand what is the target for this product (which is NOT hobbists) before generalising it, or writing another or rant about the state of your country's economy (or eastern europe as a whole), average wage and alike. For hobbists there are free alternatives.

Hobbyist and User's progress in companies, become managers, get to make recommendations about what software the business should buy and use.

.... I definitely did and still do.

- NitroPDF because Acrobat was always twice the price with all the same features

- Paintshop Pro because I could never afford to test Photoshop personally

- KompoZer because it was free WYSIWYG

Nothing against free/cheap software but professional print/publishing companies do have/need some standards across all software products/tools they use and work with....

Adobe sells "Educational" copies priced much lower so you can buy those if you qualify.

There's nothing really stopping you from having someone who does purchasing it for you.

In Canada all you need is a student ID card, probably the same elsewhere.

I think that is also accurate in the US too. Also, I think that there are some sites that sell it at an even greater discount. I think JourneyEd is one of them but I haven't compared prices in a while.

Thats a tad biased Pufu if you want my opinion, its not really fair to rule out and exclude film buffs.

Would PS CS2 be worth getting if I have GIMP?

No. Gimp > ps cs2. You would atleast want cs3 to replace Gimp (assuming you have the latest version). Seeing as how there are many new gen PS plugins for gimp.Layer styles, filters etc etc. You can take a look @ the portfolio in my sig. I did alot of that with gimp + ps plugins
