Syria - What should we do if anything?

Recommended Posts

It´s the same with Russia though. I think the radical Muslims hate Russia just as much as the US, if not even a bit more...

Indeed, considering Russia seems to be striking any Assad enemy. But they can at least work together with Assad ground forces.

(Vice News) Iranian Ground Troops Are Joining Russians in Syrian Offensive : https://news.vice.com/article/iranian-ground-troops-are-joining-russians-in-syrian-offensive-reports

Hundreds of Iranian ground troops have reportedly arrived in Syria over the past 10 days to join an offensive supporting embattled Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, two anonymous Lebanese sources told Reuters Thursday.

"The vanguard of Iranian ground forces began arriving in Syria: soldiers and officers specifically to participate in this battle," one of the unnamed sources told Reuters. "They are not advisors… we mean hundreds with equipment and weapons. They will be followed by more."

The sources added the offensive, in which Russia and other allied groups are also participating, is meant to reclaim territory that was captured from Assad by rebels in the Idlib and Hama provinces.

Now the situation got a lot more interesting, and potentially a lot more dangerous too....

If all involved parties are not very carefull this could escalate into a region wide war....

Russian policy is unbearable  (Deutschlandfunk; October 2nd; google transl.)

Yes, at least rhetorically, the Russian government seem uncooperatively. However, not with its military activities. Russia does not distinguish between the different groups which have acted violently against the regime of President Assad.

Well, there are first reports about which areas were hit, and these reports are very accurate. I know  about who is operating in these places,  in one place in the northern province of Hamar, at a place about ten kilometers north of the city Homs and in the so-called Kurdish Mountains in the north of the province of Latakia.

--->  ...IS got not hit, but the Nusra Front, which is the local branch of al-Qaeda, the Free Men of Syria, which are some kind of Syrian Taliban, and also some FSA units (Free Syrian Army). This shows that the first announcements when it comes to ISIS was a lie.

Those are the three groups mentioned, so some FSA units. They are usually small and therefore difficult to identify.

But the Nusra Front and the Free Men of Syria,  are the strongest militant units there.

Pentagon weighs using force to protect US-backed Syria rebels targeted by Russia

Looks like Obama is really angry on Putin for bombing his Nusra and Al-Qaeda rebels.

I see this as a huge conflict of interests and wonder what is Obama going to do? Repeat the Afghani scenario by arming the islamists with AA systems? This is really fucked up scenario.

It looks like Putin wants to make some room first by eliminating rebel groups that neighbor with Assad controlled territory directly. No action towards the ISIS yet. The only faction that is fighting with ISIS (Turkey backed) are Kurds and they are alone in the fight.

Has comrade "Motorola" moved to Syria? Or he is only wearing this patch as a gesture of solidarity with Syria? I've read some reports about soldiers of fortune that moved or are interested in relocating to Syria from Donbass.

It appears that one separatist got killed in Syria and his death was confirmed by his comrades from batallion Batman.

Not a very good idea as modern aircrafts together with more plain landscape make strikes much easier, and hits by MANPADS much harder.

MC Cain: "..we might do what we did in Afghanistan many years ago. Give those guys the ability to shoot down those planes.

                                             That equipment is available."

Journalist: "Who would be shooting them down ?"

MCCain is not the White House, but its interesting to see that exaclty such thoughts exist what sudayev was talking about.

U.S.-backed Syrian rebels appeal for antiaircraft missiles (Washington Post)

U.S.-backed rebels in Syria appealed to the Obama administration Friday for antiaircraft missiles to defend their positions against relentless Russian airstrikes that have so far mostly targeted the moderate opposition to President Bashar al-Assad’s rule.

U.S. officials indicated that there is no immediate plan to offer additional assistance to the rebel units that have been armed and trained under a covert CIA-led program aimed at supporting moderate groups and weakening Assad’s hold on power.

The attacks by Russian warplanes on the provinces of Hama, Homs and Idlib “did not target Daesh,†said the joint statement by the United States and its allies, using the Arabic acronym for the Islamic State. “These military actions constitute a further escalation and will only fuel more extremism and radicalization.â€

One of the groups that has received weapons and training under the program said its positions in the Hama town of Latamneh were hit by 15 bombs Friday, the third and heaviest consecutive day of strikes against the town. Although Russian officials have insisted their attacks are only targeting the Islamic State, the al-Qaeda affiliate Jabhat al-Nusra or “other†terrorist organizations, no other military group is present in the town, according to Capt. Mustafa Moarati, a spokesman for the Tajamu al-Izza rebel brigade.

The Russians are using SU-34 warplanes that are more sophisticated than any in the existing Syrian air force, enabling a more accurate delivery of higher-ordinance missiles than had been the case when Syrian warplanes were bombing..

Hassan Haj Ali, the commander of Suqour al-Jabal, another U.S.-backed group targeted by Russian strikes Thursday..........

.......“We need one of two things. Either a clear policy from the United States to prevent Russia and the regime from bombing Syrians, or otherwise

they should send us antiaircraft missiles so that we can confront the Russian planes,â€

A U.S military official said the request was under consideration.

Active or not, it's not his call to make at the end of the day. You will recall that he wanted heavy ATGMs to be sent to Ukraine but that plan didn't quite work out in the end. That is exactly why all this "McCain this, McCain that" hyperbole is quite silly.

Not sure where you're trying to go with that article either considering Chinese MANPADS have already been in the hands of both rebels and ISIS for quite some time. A influx of Stingers will not suddenly shift the balance in favour of the rebels.

 ?

The second article fits with further informations to the first one and to the comment of sudayev - so take it as a press report.

Seems like not all got such MANPADS otherwise they would not demand it and US military officials consider such a request.

Of course opinions from a senator is not the last word, but such thoughts exist what sudayev was talking about before.

Assad applauds Russian, Iranian support for Syrian government (DW/Reuters/AFP; 04/10)

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has said Russia's airstrikes against targets in Syria are vital for stability in the Middle East. The embattled leader decried international meddling in Syria's political leadership.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said Sunday that the success of Russia's military intervention in his country's civil war was vital for the entire region.

"The alliance among Russia, Syria, Iraq and Iran must succeed or else the whole region will be destroyed," Assad said

in an interview broadcast by Iranian state television, his first public remarks since Russia began its Syrian air campaign.

Assad also criticized Western countries, accusing them of fueling terrorism by supporting rebel groups, and fueling the refugee crisis.

"In reality, they are the biggest contributor for reaching this stage by supporting terrorism and imposing a siege on Syria," Assad said. "They attack terrorism but they are terrorists in their policies either by imposing the siege or by supporting the terrorists."

Assad's opponents say any political solution to Syria's four-year war must involve Assad stepping aside, although some Western states - including Germany - have softened their stance, saying he could remain during a transitional period.

But the Syrian president struck a defiant tone in remarks rebroadcast on the presidency's official Twitter account, saying it would be up to Syrians to decide who leads the country.

"Discussion about the political system or officials in Syria is an internal Syrian affair," Assad said.

A new dimension to conflict

Russia began launching airstrikes against Assad's rebel opponents on Wednesday. The Iran-backed Lebanese militia Hezbollah has also actively fought on the side of the Syrian military in a war that's claimed a quarter of a million lives and displaced millions.

British Prime Minister David Cameron lashed out at Russia, saying it is propping up a brutal dictator in Damascus.

"They are backing the butcher Assad, which is a terrible mistake for them and for the world," Cameron told the BBC. "It's going to make the region more unstable; it will lead to further radicalisation and increased terrorism. I would say to them 'change direction, join us in attacking (ISIS)."

The disastrous conflict has also strained relations in the neighborhood, with Turkey and Iran at odds as they back rival factions in the conflict. On Sunday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan singled out Tehran for defending Assad and "waging state terrorism" in Syria.

"The countries that cooperate with the [syrian] regime will be accountable to history," Erdogan said.

US continues its own anti-IS campaign

Meanwhile, the United States said its military and allies had carried out 16 airstrikes in Syria and Iraq on Saturday against suspected "Islamic State" fighters.

Three of the six strikes in Syria hit targets near the town of Hasaka, the US military said in a statement issued Sunday. IS fighters, weapons and buildings were hit in 10 strikes near several Iraqi cities, including Kirkuk, Falluja and Ramadi, the Pentagon said.

Nato tells Russia to stop air strikes on Syrian rebels (UK ITV)

Nato has told Russia to immediately stop its attacks on Syrian rebels and civilians and instead focus its efforts on fighting Islamic State.

The alliance also called on the Russians to "cease and desist" what it described as an "irresponsible" and dangerous violation of Turkish airspace during strikes.

Nato: Russia should concentrate on fighting Islamic State

Nato tells Russia to stop air strikes on Syrian rebels.

Nato has told Russia to stop its attacks on civilians and Syrian rebels and concentrate on fighting Islamic State.

Nato said in a statement:

"Allies call on the Russian Federation to immediately cease its attacks on the Syrian opposition and civilians, to focus its efforts on fighting ISIL, and to promote a solution to the conflict through a political transition."

Allies strongly protest these violations of Turkish sovereign airspace, and condemn these incursions into and violations of NATO airspace. Allies also note the extreme danger of such irresponsible behaviour. They call on the Russian Federation to cease and desist, and immediately explain these violations.

Allies call on the Russian side to take all necessary measures to ensure that such violations do not take place in the future.

Today in the interview James Cameron have said that Russia is supporting a butcher and Assad is a threat to the world.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/11909525/David-Cameron-Russias-intervention-in-Syria-helping-butcher-Assad.html(not this interview but fragments of it)

Seriously, but why? Has anyone in Europe been threated by president of Syria? This used to be a safe, tourist friendly country. Now it's in ruin, plagued with warring islamists of medieval mentality. The big EU leaders are totally delusional - they are imposing us that Assad is some sort of "poster-monster" almost like Bin Laden or something...

They still can't agree that because their faulty decisions and support of wrong powers led to decay of security in the Arab world and arise of dangerous terror groups. But it's still evil butcher Assad... Wonder who is more evil Assad or those who created fake stories with chemical weapons to give Assads a bad name. Anyways... Grabbing me a popcorn and gonna watch how Putin is dealing with they rebels responsible for keeping the fire alive. Putin shows he still can and it's another time he is one step ahead of "Camerons, Merkels, Hollandes" and others.

Russian insider: Have a better plan for Syria? 'Give us some names' http://edition.cnn.com/2015/10/05/world/russia-syria-nikonov-amanpour/

"If they are going to choose someone else, OK. If you have some better plan, please provide us with a plan, or give us some names with whom we can talk," Nikonov said.

"If you have a name of a person who can substitute (for al-Assad) immediately without causing real trouble in Syria, I would like to hear that name."

Yep, great question...

"Russia is ready for contact with the Free Syrian Army, We will be ready to establish contact with it if it’s really a capable military group of patriotic opposition consisting of Syrians. We do not hide this fact. But this structure is already a phantom. I have asked [state Secretary] John Kerry to provide us with information about the whereabouts of this Free Syrian Army and who commands it," said Lavrov.

Those who failed to build gas pipe from Qatar to Europe because of Assad's refuse to permit pipe going through his territory.
