ladlon 10 Posted January 29, 2011 Hi. I've asked this before, but now that time has passed, and I've upgraded to Combined Operations (plus installing all the latest patches), I figured it might be justified to ask again... Based on what has already been added/improved in Combined Operations, what mods (at this point in time) are still highy recommended/necessary? I ask because some previously favorite mods may be obsolete, as they either have been added to the core program, or the core program improved/fixed what the mod was originally addressing. I'm currently running some of the basics like Zeus AI, LandTexture, Little Birds, Fast Rope, Saku Light FX, GL4, SLX, CSM2, and @wict (whatever the heck that is... I can't remember!). Haven't lept into ACE2 year, but will sometime. Any of these no longer relevant (with an up to date patched Combined Operations)? Anything better that would replace any of these? BTW, I'm not after unrealistic (or CPU killing) fx stuff, or silly things... Just mods that make things 'better' in a realistic way (ex. improve sound or visual fx quality, improve voices, add appropriate features, etc). Currently, frame rates are very nice. Graphics are super. Audio seems fine (although jets sound like they could have a bit more 'umph'...) I HAVE noticed an odd LOD(?) issue since patching up recently... Even though I seem to remember reading that LOD issues have been fixed in the last patches, I'm finding I have some trees that are virtually cubes until I approach... Maybe that's a data loading thing, and my drive needs defragging... Don't know... As usual, any feedback or opinions on any of these things is always welcome! nikiforos 450 Posted January 29, 2011 JSRS sound mod and WAR FX Blastcore for me the perfect combination :) These two make the game more realistic then ever :)
Kenwort 0 Posted January 29, 2011 These are the mods I use: ACE, ACEX, ACEX_SM, Sounds Of Anders, True Mods, WarFX Blastcore, GDT MOD (vegetation, grass, binoculars, hdr), LandText, Reducded Voices and Vapor Trails.
ladlon 10 Posted February 1, 2011 (edited) Thanks, guys... I've installed JSRS and WarFX, and am very happy with both! I'm going to dive into ACE at some point... Just trying to get to a certain level of skill in Arma2, as I suspect the additional realism of ACE2 will hand my butt over to me! If I can get some sort of launcher app happening that will allow me to quickly/non-destructively add/remove ACE2 from my Arma2 install, then I'd be more inclined to jump in. Just seems the ACE2 install is a bit complex, at first glance. Edited February 1, 2011 by ladlon
twisted 128 Posted February 1, 2011 dont forget jtd smoke and fire effects, acr, mandobiles amazing mod,
ladlon 10 Posted February 1, 2011 I'll look into those (...I've heard of JTD smoke quite a while ago), but I don't want to bog my frame rate down. I'm still really evaluating what hit the WarFX is giving me... It seems fine so far, although I did have a moment where it became a slide show (...granted, I had a helicopter and a tank both blasting away at the small hut I was in, eventually turning it to rubble!) twisted 128 Posted February 1, 2011 gl4 and slx are a bit more likely to bog your machine done. they're great but can impact performance a bit.
ladlon 10 Posted February 1, 2011 Ya, I got rid of SLX recently (as I really disliked the constant screaming of injured guys, plus the frequent "F**K...", plus, after watching vids on what it does, I wasn't really keen on the gore effects (..sure, they are fun/cool, but it's not really my main focus in Arma2). GL4 I also installed quite a while back (along with SLX), but wasn't really sure if I was seeing any of its effects... The initialization text would appear (when I would start, say, a Cipher mission), but I was really not sure if it was truly working or not. I recently removed it, but reactivated it a few days ago (after installing JSRS and WarFX, as I was reading that people said it was worth having in, even with WarFX activated too). Right now, I'm definitely seeing/hearing a difference with JSRS and WarFX installed (explosions being quite big and dramatic, and sounds being more 'elaborate')... and loving it. No fps hits that I can visibly see. Still going like silk so far. I'm not even sure if I'm currently running GL4... but I know I have yet to see any of the effects that I'm expecting to see (buildings on fire, artillery shake)... and as for the AI enhancements, they are hard to spot. I'm still not entirely sure how GL4 works, as far as playing something like Cipher (random mission generator mod)... I see the initialization, but really don't know if I need to do anything more to have them running during a session (or if they even WOULD work within one!) I'm looking into each mod that people here are suggesting, and evaluating whether it's something I want or need. It appears that Acre is a cool teamspeak radio thing, but I play offline single player, so (for now) that's not required. As mentioned in my original post, I'm also curious if any of the mods I currently have are now obsolete (due to updates to the core A2/OA app, or mods I put in later). I certainly don't want redundant (or even conflicting) mods. Keep the suggestions coming, including anything you feel I should get rid of (due to redundancy, or because you know of something better)! PELHAM 10 Posted February 1, 2011 The RKSL Studios UK Eurofighter Typhoon is awesome but: -Bit too fast across the map for multiplayer. In single player it's really good. -Remember, the weapons are modelled on real world so 1000lb bomb will take out most of a small town. -2 flap settings for landing / takeoff. Remember to press ctrl K twice for landing. I would also recommend one of the No-blur mods - that blurring when you move, particularly in buildings, makes me feel sick. NoRailgunner 0 Posted February 1, 2011 landlon why you aren't able to look, search and read about addons/mods + their updates here: http://forums.bistudio.com/forumdisplay.php?f=91 or on Arma2+OA news sites etc ?
Gunter Severloh 4064 Posted February 1, 2011 that blurring when you move, particularly in buildings, makes me feel sick. Turn off Post processing effects in the video options. I dont know why that is even in the game, i mean if you turn your head real quick or turn around quick your vision dont blur, its not realistic.
SeaVee 10 Posted February 1, 2011 ACE, ACEX, JSRS, JTD, Landtex, sthud, stmovement, TrueGameplay, TrueUser The last two I just started using and they are truly awesome, but they all are really.

'SUGGESTED mods for Combined Operations these days' ....because I'm asking what other people like, not asking info about each mod. I HAVE been doing the searches, and checking new mods as well... I'm just seeing what poeple like these days... and what they feel of my list might be redundant or improved upon with other mods. If there would be, say, some sort of poll thread asking 'What's the best sound mod these days?', or 'What's the best fx mod?', etc... that would be part of what I'm after as well... but I couldn't find one, so I'm just asking here instead. Thanks for the link. I've been checking out that section. ---------- Post added at 07:29 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:07 PM ---------- Hi, SeaVee... Ya, those last four are new to me. They look pretty interesting! I'm going to give the Truemods a go, actually... Those look like something that might be of use to me too. JSRS and WarFX were really great recent additions to my mod list... plus, I'm also flushing out some of the older mods... like SLX... which only recently seemed to kick in (update thing?), reveal themselves, and make me want to uninstall them. dmarkwick 261 Posted February 2, 2011 I guess each poster's mod collection is as individual as the PCs that host them, and the tastes of your average gamer :) For my part, I'm not too interested in new units or vehicles etc, although I do have quite a few. I'm mostly interested in the gameplay enhancing addons, I like SLX for it's enhancements (although I have some of it disabled) and ZeusAI, and I especially like DAC, and I also use ACE2 for about half my gaming. I also find that I can copy & paste missions from one map to another and get different experiences from the same setups, so I have quite a few maps also, although I tend to stick with a few favourites in practise, Falluja, Podagorsk, Isla Duala. I have quite a few individual enhancers too, like the VFAI rearming addon, CopyMyStance, Whatever I think can enhance my game and that works well.
ladlon 10 Posted February 2, 2011 Hello again, DMarkwick! Seeing a lot of you lately! For sure! Opinions will vary... But, I'm just getting an idea of what is popular, as well as opinions of mods. Getting some great info. Ya, at this point (after the most recent mod installs), I'm now more or less focusing on imporovments to the interface, I think... Looks like there's some mods for that out there, and some have already been suggested here. One issue that pops into mind that always drove me a bit nuts was that the squadmember icons on the map do not identify WHO it is... even just with the team member NUMBER, at least (referenced to the team portraits at the bottom HUD). So many times on the map, I'd be looking at a generic soldier icon, and be wondering who it was... If the guy is a specialist, and you only have one of that type, you can tell by the unique icon...otherwise, you (for example) choose a random team member number (while doing (say) a move order, and HOPE it's the guy you are looking at on the map! ...unless I'm missing something here! Just seems odd that there SEEMS to be no connection between the team pics on the main view vs the unit icons on the map view. I was always thinking that even a tool tip type thing (showing you the team member info) when you hover over a map unit icon would be great.
NoRailgunner 0 Posted February 2, 2011 Seems like you are a bit lazy - again follow the link (not the white rabbit!) http://community.bistudio.com/wiki/ArmA_II_AI_Squad_Command and for an Hint & Tips overview: http://community.bistudio.com/wiki/Category:Hints_%26_Tips The term "popular" is overrated. No need to create another useless thread about addons/mods + peoples opinion in "A2 & OA General - Discuss our Next Generation Game ArmA 2 & the standalone expansion Operation Arrowhead.". Such things are already covered + done in those release threads of mods/addons. Better do this very little "work" with searching and reading on your own instead of waiting to be fed with the silver spoon... If you have questions or suggestions about a addon/mod post them in the relevant thread. ;)
ladlon 10 Posted February 2, 2011 (edited) Okay everybody... We are no longer allowed to participate in this thread we've all been enjoying... It displeases NoRailgunner, and throws his universe out of balance.... hehehe... (Thanks to all those who 'spoonfed' me!) See ya in the next thread, NoRailgunner! ;) (You know I'm messing with ya...) Don't forget the RKSL Soundmod... *hides out of shame*. Don't see how it's too fast for multiplayer myself... It's a realistic speed. tpw 2315 Posted February 3, 2011 Another mod well worth a look at is summervegetation. While specifically for Chernarus, similar to landtex, it basically turns most autumn themed islands into summer islands, replacing trees, grass and clutter with greener versions. A great way to increase the number of distinct looking islands.
