Which Version for a Noob?

Recommended Posts

I get one ArmA2 game for Christmas but I need to let Santa know which one to get for me.

I've not played any of the actual games though I've made my way through demos and find the game enjoyable...and my computer seems to handle it fine.

Which version would you reccomend for someone who is just starting out with the ArmA 2 series?

Thanks.

I suggest you to buy ArmA 2: Combined Operations. It's got original ArmA 2 and stand-alone addon Operation Arrowhead. That way you won't need to buy OA later. Since most of servers work in CO mode, you'll definitely want it.

Get ArmA 2: Combined Operations, if you can't get that then the original ArmA 2 then ArmA 2: Operation Arrowhead, if you get A2:OA first it's hard to get them to combine together so you can use both at the same time

^^What he said. With just ArmA2 alone most servers will stay locked for you. With ArmA2: CO you have all possibilities wide open. :)

Welcome to the ArmA2 community btw.

Thanks. I appreciate your input.

It seems to be unanimous so far. It's tough to beat that.

From reading the responses, it sounds like the original ArmA2 plus Operation Arrowhead can be combined into one sort of massive play field. Somehow, I missed that when I was trying to figure out which to obtain.

Again, thanks.

Yes definitely go with Combined Operations. Sprocket would be the place to buy online if you don't have it in a local game store.

You can buy it vis three different methods.

Retail

Sprocket

Steam

Get it retail or from Sprocket.

It's a large download though (15GB from memory).

Steam has caused issues in the past and confused 'noobs' who can't get beta patches working, or have to wait longer than others to get the latest patch, sometimes meaning they go a night without being able to join their favorite server, etc. Also bit more confusing when you want to run mods, and most people write instructions as if you are not using Seam copy. My advice is avoid the Steam version.

Good luck finding it in a Retail store in the USA WTF. I live in a very large city near miami and I went to multiple PC game stores mom&pop and Crop stores, walmart does not have it in the system and bestbuy has none in stock for a very long time. The best game and most people don't have a clue, what it is how sad!

grab the sprocket version

WOW I just had to go to best buy to pick up somethings for the wife and and I saw 2 ARMA2 and 2 combined operations. the saleperson told me they just came in and only get a few every few months.

The ARMA2 was for 39.99 and the combined operations was only 29.99 lol so I take back what I said above. I just need to complete my new system to play. Best buy in the states has ARMA2 but you need to look hard!!!!!!!!

If anyone needs help with making a PC go ask pufu he has been a real help along with some of the developers and Moderators thanks all!!!!

I don't know about the US but in Canada, Bestbuy and Futureshop have a bad habit of failing to list the lesser known games on their website despite having them in stock.

I would also say definitely go for the Combined Operations, and obviously do Bootcamp. Playing with the editor is also recommended. I'd play Vanilla for a while to find your feet with ArmA before contemplating installing MODs to keep things simple, thus you'll appreciate them more ;)

I bought Combined Ops as a download last month from Gamersgate, but it didn't come as a single download (as i'd expected) but came in two separate downloads (ArmaII and Arrowhead), so now I've got 2 separate games sitting on my drive and have got the hassle of trying to combine them when i've psyched myself up to try. (I'm just a grunt wargamer and PC-illiterate)

@PoorOldSpike

Please install the 2 games in the same folder and make sure your ARMA 2 is above version 1.05. Also after those 2 games are installed in the same folder double click arma2oa.exe to run it combined.

@KGrob

Grab it on Sprocket, if you get the "ARMA 2 is not installed or installation corrupted" Error during the update of ARMA 2, search the forum for the fix. (Many people like me got the game from sprocket and encounters the error where a missing registry found)
