Sounds fine. If posted on a forum, it'd be called a "flamebait", but that's sometimes just another word for "controversial". The text flashes by far too fast, not enough time to read them, which is unfortunate. But he seemed to be making his point in a perfectly valid, if somewhat confrontational manner. From a semiotic point of view his use of military dress was a nice ironic statement, and he's apparently served so he knows what he's talking about. Nothing to call home about though.

I actually wrote the beginnings of a huge rant here, but I guess I learned at some point over in either the US politics or the International politics one that there's little point in arguing about things like these with complete strangers on the Internet.

Wolfrug

On the subject of war, how can you say one side is right and the other is wrong? It's war, and by it's very definition, it is deemed to be wrong. Killing is deemed to be wrong. It's different, however, when you look at whether or not it is necessary.

It's a bit odd how this video's making an anti-war statement, but really only concentrates on the issues relating to the US armed forces. I think we all know that, despite the amount it's declared by the media, the US armed forces aren't the only ones who commit heinous acts in a time of war.

Even tho i felt the urge to close the tab after 10 seconds. I resisted to see what it's going to become.

I stopped at:

Let me tell you story about a boy. He grew up living in freedom and choice. Yet when he joined the military, they took his freedom and silenced his voice.

So, tell me rapper, why do you think he could grow up living in freedom and choice?

Welcome to the world we live in, where some people don't realize that freedom comes at a price.

This makes me sick.

Lyrics

The Marine Corps

Does not want robots

The Marine Corps

Wants killers

The Marine Corps

Wants do build indestructible men

Men without fear

The Marine Corps

Wants killers

Men without fear

One! Two! Three! Four!

And then you will be in a world of shit!

My Corps! Your Corps! Our Corps! Marine Corps!

Sythe's cold edge thrust

Spreading blood on their face

Bells toll the coming of their final days

Red flowers growing

To mark all our tears

The pain and the anguish

We're planting the seeds

Reaching forward, through the dark

Dead, marching forward, much colder than the cud

Reaching forward, through the dark

Spreading the soilbleed, no return when you're marked

Contorted spirit

Distorted creed

You know that your time has come

When the soil bleeds

Contorted spirit

Distorted creed

You know that your time has come

When the soil bleeds

Rot and corrosion

The throth in your lungs

There is no release

Gasp despair through the mud

Red flowers growing

To mark all our tears

The pain and the anguish

We're planting the seeds

Reaching forward, through the dark

Dead, marching forward, much colder than the cud

Reaching forward, through the dark

Spreading the soilbleed, no return when you're marked

Contorted spirit

Distorted creed

You know that your time has come

When the soil bleeds

Contorted spirit

Distorted creed

You know that your time has come

When the soil bleeds

And in that vein: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohXsdbF-7jc

Universal Soldier, by Donovan

He's five foot-two, and he's six feet-four,

He fights with missiles and with spears.

He's all of thirty-one, and he's only seventeen,

Been a soldier for a thousand years.

He'a a Catholic, a Hindu, an Atheist, a Jain,

A Buddhist and a Baptist and a Jew.

And he knows he shouldn't kill,

And he knows he always will,

Kill you for me my friend and me for you.

And he's fighting for Canada,

He's fighting for France,

He's fighting for the USA,

And he's fighting for the Russians,

And he's fighting for Japan,

And he thinks we'll put an end to war this way.

And he's fighting for Democracy,

He's fighting for the Reds,

He says it's for the peace of all.

He's the one who must decide,

Who's to live and who's to die,

And he never sees the writing on the wall.

But without him,

How would Hitler have condemned him at Dachau?

Without him Caesar would have stood alone,

He's the one who gives his body

As a weapon of the war,

And without him all this killing can't go on.

He's the Universal Soldier and he really is to blame,

His orders come from far away no more,

They come from here and there and you and me,

And brothers can't you see,

This is not the way we put the end to war.

Oh, and:

Welcome to the world we live in, where some people don't realize that freedom comes at a price.

Well done for reaching the YouTube level of "stop bashing the soldiers that give you the right to free speech"-style comment. The only ones whose freedom of speech is being protected in Iraq might be the Iraqis. Any other freedoms you seem more than capable of taking away from yourselves without help from anyone else.

(Woo peace and love!)

So a soldier is actually an evil murderer if he gets sent to Iraq instead of Afghanistan?

YES. it is a poorly done video. YES. It is rap. But Im just talking about the content of the "song".

Sorry for anybody that I may have "offended" with this video.

Yea sorry. Been studying all day so I'm too worked up for creative arguments.

All I wanted to say in my first post is, that soldiers are not triggerhappy killer machines saying "OMFG I'm so bored. Let's fuck some shit up in Iraq." It's the people that the majority has elected that send them there.

Now whether or not we support the cause, the soldiers deserve our respect for what they decided to do (serve their country that is). I'm kind of allergic to accross the board soldier bashing.

Just mute the video and pause it to read text. Anyway, shouldn't this be in the politics thread?

Pacifism is a silly ideal that fails at a very basic level. If you think about its appliance in real crises even for a moment, it's easy to see that it will only make it easier for ambitious and greedy people to use the weak.

We would still have all our rights and freedoms if we had sat out of every war since the the 1860s. We would just be poorer.

It's a mental tongue-twister to say our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan are defending our freedom, or that owe our right to criticize the government to them. Err, what?

The armed forces serve our interests (dubiously defined), not our ideals.

Well, 1918 was the first time germany had a full blown democracy. So i beg to differ.

Well, 1918 was the first time germany had a full blown democracy. So i beg to differ.

And how did that work out?

Anyways, we're not Germans. Our armies fight for other peoples' rights sometimes, but our rights are not at stake because the commercial interests of our corporations and strategic positions of our allies are threatened.

The greatest attack on our freedoms I can think of came from the anti-sedition laws during World War One, when civil liberties were casually and deeply violated in order to 'support the war effort.' Which side was the military on then?

The most the armed forces has down to protect American freedoms recently has been to escort black children to a public school in Alabama, because it's pretty hard to uphold the Bill of Rights and the Constitution in other countries, where those documents don't mean anything.

And come to think of it, there has been conscription for most of the time that our soldiers have been 'defending our freedoms.' So millions of men have had the privilege to experience the coerced confiscation of their freedom so that they may be sent to safeguard the freedom of others. But that doesn't make the canned platitudes sound so good anymore.

Your standard of living doesn't have much to do with the First Amendment. But the profits of the United Fruit Company don't have much to do with your standard of living.
