Arma-2 Demo Looks Like A Cartoon

Recommended Posts

I just loaded the demo, and started the game. I set the video options at the highest settings (have an ATI 4870 with 1MB). The game screens appear as if they were cartoons (I am referring to resolution). Trees look like a 1st grader drew them with a crayon - the same for bushes and grass on the ground. People look like they are from games from the early 1990's. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times. My computer works just fine when playing Bad Company 2 (Battlefield 2), which was just released a few months ago. The resolution is excellent with that game. So I am assuming that some particular parameter is not set properly, or that there is some driver or other item that I am missing? Any suggestions? Or should I just keep playing Bad Company 2? Thanks for any suggestions.

Arma 2 is much more powerful than BF2 or just about any other game out there. You can try going to Options>Video Options>Advanced and checking if all of them are on low, but most likely your video card isn't story enough memory to load high-detail textures. So short answer is keep playing BF2. :o:

try medium settings and u should have at least a dual core cpu , better a quad core and at least 2 gb of ram.

arma 2 ist way more demanding than bf 2 bad company because of the huge island and trees and cities.

your videocard is ok but the cpu must have alot of power.

Set 3d resolution (maybe called fillrate in demo, can't remember for sure) to 100% (basically set it to the same as your normal resolution)

Well something like that happened to me but instead of blocky graphics I got some serious acid colors all over the screen. I was playing that jungle island too and it really really fit the "vietnam on acid" feeling. Trees where red and flowing around, bushes where white, sky was a weird purple, explosions looked like colorful squares or flags or some shit like that. it was amazing.

It was also probably my video card heating up or my drivers needed updating. I don't know since it never happened since.

On topic. What are your specs op?

Graphics on acid sounds like a DX9 bug. Never had it in the demo, and only a few times fairly recently. In Arma1 I had it nearly every session in the end. I think ACE got too big or something. If your machine apparently hang for quite a few seconds (complete freeze), with high disk activity, where it returns with the bug, that's the symptoms I got for the DX9 crash. Reboot and try again.

Well, I have a PC that probably JUST ABOUT makes it into the gaming category (That's a 2.5ghz Quad Core, a GT250, 4gb ram)

I can either play -

With a 3D resolution of 1280x, and EVERYTHING on as high as possible (AA, AF, everything) and get 40-50

Or with a 3D Resolution of 1650x, and mediocore graphics (20-40 fps)

Now, the 3D resolution, IMO, makes the game look brilliant, everything is so much more clear, it's easier to spot enemies, and will enhance your gameplay. Lower than that it becomes very blurry.

it's because of 4+GB memory

also i suggest you try -winXP commandline option ...

one of main reasons is that demo is not up2date and thus is missing the fix for 4+GB memory / 64bit OSes and so on...

Hi Everyone,

I bought this game (CD/DVD version) today, and got the blocky image posted on Page 1 of this thread by AnimalMother92.

I tried Medium, High and Very High settings, but nothing has changed. I'm not sure of the version number of the game (where can I find that out?) but am downloading Patch 1.05 as we speak. Will that help?

Below are my system specs:

Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit OS

Intel Core i7 860 2.80Ghz CPU

8GB Corsair Dual Channel DDR3 666Mhz RAM

Gigabyte Intel P55A-UD3R Socket 1156 motherboard

GeForce GTS250 1024MB (Nvidia driver 197.45_desktop_win7_winvista_64)

SyncMaster 2494HM 1920x1080 monitor

DXDIAG reports DirectX 11 used, everything in order and no problems.

What graphical settings do you recommend given my system?

Thanks,

Golden

***EDIT*** I just checked the version of arma.exe as reported in Windows Explorer and it says its version 1.01. I'll update with 1.05 and see what happens then. Other comments are welcome.

***UPDATE*** OK, just installed 1.05 (reported installation succesful) but when trying to load ARMA, I get the Windows error message "Has stopped responding" or similar and this:

Problem signature:

Problem Event Name: APPCRASH

Application Name: arma2.exe

Application Version: 1.5.0.62017

Application Timestamp: 4b2f54d8

Fault Module Name: arma2.exe

All I get is the option to close the game. When it starts, I get as far as a menu, and then bang, straight to desktop with the error message described above. Any ideas? Is this going to be a traumatic experience getting the game running?

Hi - the arma2.rpt is quite large - lots of error messages about "...unsupported sample frequency" such as this:

Error: sample ca\sounds\air\mv22\int-wind1.wss with unsupported sample frequency: 44100

Should I attach the file here?

Thanks.

Seems like something wrong with your sound. Update your sound drivers and see if that works

Mmm...I'm not convinced it is, and besides the sound drivers are up-to-date. The sound worked perfectly prior to installing patch 1.05, and still continues to work with my other games and applications.

I think I'll uninstall and reinstall the game again. If that fails to do the trick, its back to the shop.

I've been reading a little bit here on some of the vast problems people have experienced with the game, even on high quality gaming rigs, and I am a bit suprised to be honest. Lets see what a reinstall does...

Thanks.

First goto this thread http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=77880 and click on the link for the latest direct x 9 distrib and download and install that (yes, DX9, even if you are using windows 7)

After that if you're still having problems then goto;

Start Menu -> Control Panel -> Sound -> double click on speakers (or whatever your default audio device is) -> click on the advanced tab -> under "default format" click the selection box and chose "24 bit, 44100 HZ (studio quality)" -> click ok then test ArmA 2.

If it still doesn't work, go back and change it into "16 bit, 44100 (CD quality)"

Thanks Bulldogs.

I'm downloading DX9 now, and will try your suggestions.

also try with the "-winxp" parameter in the startup shortcut if you still have graphical problems.

well lets hope for a cool OA demo. then we can get rid of the lame A2 demo, which should be pulled. It turns more new players off from the real game. I really have no idea why they would allow that to be Downloaded. It must be a Bis thang. you know shoot them selves in the foot, over and over again....
