mickkk 10 Posted April 22, 2010 Thank you mate for your quick answer. I am picking the game up tomorrow from Jbhifi. Ghey are very nice there but dont know much. I had a list of questions that got blank looks. They didnt believe the game was for me! When you get to my age, all that is left are memories, but Ive forgotten most of em but my doctor says it will be good for me to be involved in someting I know aout. I was a professional soldier all my life. Imn not interested in much nowdays, too old, but I am always trying to keep the ole grey matter working. I played playstation a few times with the grandchildren. A car raceing game. I crashed into the barrier and the controller shook. I thought I was being electrocuted! Thanks for your respect shown, much appreciated. I will let you know how I go. Im almost deaf as a post, so games might be more interesting than watching the telly. War was my job, I was good at it. I lost a lot of mates, to me the enemy was just another type of rabbit. I watched some of war in the pacific the other night. It took me back a long way. It was very realistic. When you shoot someoe in the jungle, you get a fog of blood just like in that TV show. regards Mick
terox 316 Posted April 22, 2010 Hi Mick, check out the Guide to multiplayer in my signature, that should help you a lot. Also might be worth checking out the community manual we have, (also in my signature) although we are in a different time zone to you, some of the tutorials in there apply to a lot of communities
Arma-2-Guru 55 Posted April 22, 2010 Wow, man I got a whole lot of respect for you. Fighting in so many wars, you must of been an amazing soldier. Hope I don't run into you in the multiplayer games haha, peace and prosperity be with you :)
mickkk 10 Posted April 23, 2010 I picked the game up today for 50 dollars new, which was quite good as I thought it was going to cost me about 80. I will look at the links you have given me thanks. If you want to know about a real soldier, look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keith_Payne look at the bottom, more fruit salad than a CWA summer convention. I can run you through some stuff but you will need a mic as typing half of the stuff you need to know about ACE 2 will take for ever ;). We will go through it with ya on a map called ACE Training grounds so would be fun. let me know. Daniel
mrcash2009 0 Posted April 23, 2010 (edited) Hi Mikkk, I just wanted to post becuase it was such a great friendly thread request title and knowing your background etc ... just could help but reply and say hello sir :) You would be good in multiplayer games, you should def check out some clans and get involved you would be a perfect person for the teams I would imagine. Is there a list for idiots like me to make it easy? (not my words of course :) )http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=96591 The above is a definitive list of things for Arma2 that you can "add". I would say simply stick with maybe getting ACE2, but initially just get used to whole way the thing works. in the multiplayer forum section people post clans all the time so check out some that are in your area/time zone. If you then register on one of their sites im pretty sure they would help you no end to get running to play MP with them :) As regards the patch you just need the latest one not any previous so grab 1.05 and install from here: http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=8820 (scroll down the bottom of the page to the 2 alternate links to grab it IE: "Download from FTP #1:" / "Download from FTP #2:") Or that doesn't work, heres a list of places to get 1.05: http://community.bistudio.com/wiki/Arma_2:_Patch_v1.05 I cant say how "easy" all this would be for you but grandchildren on standby should do the trick for sure. The main thing would be ACE but getting use to the game first, then seeking a clan, then getting in with them, and they can guide you through steps to get on their servers. If you go with a clan you will get specific advice from them as they know you going to be on their server as apposed to many bits of advice here (which is still a good thing). BTW clans post here for links to them : http://forums.bistudio.com/forumdisplay.php?f=90 I'm sure from your background etc people will be glad to bend over backwards to help you out :) Edited April 23, 2010 by mrcash2009
mosh 0 Posted April 23, 2010 I hope you enjoy the game as much as I do. There are tons of great addons out there, as others have suggested, but I recommend just trying the game out first without any. Get used to the controls and feel of the game. Appreciate what the developers have given us. Then, once you are comfortable, try some addons. There are so many to choose from (I have 204 downloaded, and love them all). Then you can appreciate what members of this one of a kind community have given us too. There is loads of knowledge stored in these forums. You have already been pointed in some good directions by the posters above me. Enjoy yourself!

andromedagalaxe 10 Posted April 23, 2010 Welcome to the community. I suggest you learn how the game works first before trying multiplay or add-ons. Arma 2 has a lot of content and takes even seasoned video game players awhile to figure out the ins and outs. ... also you can start by shooting rabbits in this game if you want. Alex72 1 Posted April 25, 2010 Wow Mick welcome! :) You will LOVE this simulator im sure. You dont need anything more than this on your computer and it lasts for years. Make your own missions, mess around in the editor just having fun testing things out, downloading and testing new addons (vehicles, gear, units islands, missions, campaigns) or go multiplayer with some nice people and do some nice missions together. Well many already told you a lot so i just had to say welcome and hope you enjoy this title! :) Dont forget to pick up Operation Arrowhead as well late june this summer. ;)
SWAT_BigBear 0 Posted April 26, 2010 I have recently got into computers Hello from the US. Food for thought: Seeing your are new to computers, I feel for you at this point. You will encounter many problems in which you may not understand. Most of them will be your pc itself, along with drivers/updates.. ect that makes it all "click" together. If a pc is having hardware or drivers issues, it may drive you away from gaming...or maybe just certain games. Patience will definitely help you in this "gaming/pc" world we adore ourselves here. Hope the best for your venture, and as you can see, many of us here are willing to help you.
mickkk 10 Posted April 27, 2010 Hello Boys, Well the previous post was most prudent. Installed updates, latest drivers for kb, mouse and video card. Cannot get rid of the mouse lag. I can get it down to 2 or 3 seconds but no lower. We tried a few other games demos and the mouse works fine for them. I have a Hd2600 pro card, the pc is 2 x dual core e 6750@2.66 ghz. G7 cordless mouse and tried a corded one. It would be a shame to miss out on the fun, but I think the game is headed for ebay. We also changed mouse sensivity in game user profiles, in mouse management software also. Tried every screen resolution possible, played with video card anti aliasing settings etc etc. I have read this was a common problem and no one post seems to have the answer. Any ideas? stk2008 14 Posted April 27, 2010 (edited) Hi there. Well I dont want to upset you but your graphic card tbh is a little low realy. All so have you turned down smoothing in the control section?. one other thing to see if its the graphic card turn every thing down eg resolution and all graphic detail. Good luck edit ok looked up your card and im am correct im sorry to say it you will get mouse lag with this card its poo sorry :(. these cards are good not great but good http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-004-OE&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=927 i know its from a uk site just giving you an idea. If you look on Ebay you could pick up a 8800gt I use one and there not the best but im happy with mine running this game. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/XFX-8800GT-Alpha-Dog-256mb-PCI-Express-Graphics-Card-/320521077916?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Computing_Computer_Components_Graphics_Video_TV_Cards_TW&hash=item4aa08b849c as an idea its the one i have probably wont go for any more than £40 ish. So im very sure your problem is your graphic card but try what I said and put every thing to low even resolution. Edited April 27, 2010 by stk2008
mickkk 10 Posted April 27, 2010 AHA, well it is a few years old and when I got it it was a bit behind, but there was reason at the time, HMDI and HDTV I think from memory. Im not against spending a few hundred dollars to catch up in the video stakes. One day I will get this thing hooked up to the 50 inch TV. It looks like aboout 4 upgrades to a video card occur each year, then the model number changes, so Im about 12 or so generations behind I think. One good thing, the price of these things seems to have come down a lot. Perhaps some Aussies can recommend a good easily available video card, when they sober up. It was a very big weekend here. I can say us old diggers are all for you having a day off. We never got a bloody day off, so take all you can! Seems many took today off as well, go for it boys! Zipper5 74 Posted April 27, 2010 If you're looking for ATI cards then I wouldn't recommend dropping below the 4800 series. If you're looking for a nVidia card instead, I don't think it's worthwhile going below a 9800. Those can be a little pricey, though. You might be able to get away with a nVidia 8800 GTX, but I don't think you'll get the performance in Arma 2 that you're looking for. I hope that helps. stk2008 14 Posted April 27, 2010 I use an 8800gt and it ok its not great but I run it at 1440x900 all set to normal apart from shadows high post process of. runs ok for me and the cards can be had cheap. But as you say not the best of card I agree and seeing as mickkk is willing to spend a few more Penneys then I would go for something a bit better now. But I agree with you ziper 4800 is probably min tbh I heard the 4870 1gb are very good in arma.
Super Darly 10 Posted April 27, 2010 Hey Mickkk, you can pick up an ATI 5770 card for pretty cheap compared to the higher end stuff. Should do the job for you nicely compared to that older 2600.
