jpinard 10 Posted March 26, 2010 I just can't get a handle on flying nap of the Earth with the views that come default in the game. Especially in the A1- everything is so far away. I know I can "zoom in", but when I do, I usually crash because I don't have proper situational awareness. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks!

jpinard 10 Posted March 26, 2010 Hello there. The only suggestion i have is for you to practice more...=D _neo_ What I really should do is get TrackIR. But it's too expensive for me after upgrading the rest of my computer for this game. At any, rate, most flight sims (and I know this isn't a flight sim) have a no cockpit mode that overlays your instruments on the sides of the screen. I was hoping with the zoom in/out and other keyboard options there was some trick people came up with to give you better situational awareness (especially when trying to find enemies on the ground). wolfbite 8 Posted March 26, 2010 Fly with keyboard.... look with mouse.... Although in helicopters I wish you coud lean forward or down... because the window panels block you view when flying :(
cm. 10 Posted March 26, 2010 try getting used to free look in air craft, it's a bit hard at first but you can get used to it after a while, makes flying choppers much easier at least.
Steakslim 1 Posted March 26, 2010 There are instruments in those aircraft and a hud that all tell you the same info. Know them, use them, become one, and remember that the tallest trees in Chernarus have a clearance of about 35m to 40m, for trees are the enemy, and they are many. Use free-look in the aircraft? Now that's a good suggestion. Maybe I can map some of that stuiff to my Saitek X52 Pro. Steakslim - Which HUD are you referring too? The giant olive green default stuff (that's not very useful), or individual HUD's in the aircraft? Some of the pseudo-real HUD's are so tiny I can't barely see the info. Get freetrack, cost me £2.50 for a ps2 eyetoy, £4 quid for the IR emmitters, resistor and ptc fuse from farnell and a spare USB lead to power it. Works a treat and cost next to nothing :) Once youre used to it arma2 is so much more immersive, especially when driving/flying. Ive got it setup for freelook, leaning and zooming :)

Yep I use 3rd person all the time, but that kind of pulls the realism out of the game if you're in 3rd person mode while in a jet/chopper.
cri74 10 Posted March 27, 2010 (edited) I use the [Alt] Key + Mouse and/or the arrow keys on my numpad to adjust my view so i can look more down when im flying a chopper for example, but a cam mounted on the nose of the aircraft would be great like you say :) Edited March 27, 2010 by cri74

The virtual horizon is your best friend in a chopper/plane, it works since OFP... it will tell if you are rolling too far lef, right, if you losing altitude too fast and help you keep a height or come to a full stop in a helo without using auto-hover. The other instrumments are useless imo as you also see them in the green HUD (speed, heading). If BIS ever disabled this unrealistic stuff in veteran mode these instruments might be worth to look at. Dead3yez 0 Posted March 27, 2010 http://wiki.x-plane.com/w/images/d/d4/Hud_view_mobile.png Something like this would be very nice. However, since the game isn't primarily an Aircraft sim then this is something that'd probably be much better suited in a mod.

Can you post a screenshot of "default" view vs. the view you like to end up with after moving things around? I'm not sure I understand how looking down more helps unless you're able to sit higher in the aircraft and look down... but I don't think that's possible? Thanks for the help! :)
Imperator[TFD] 444 Posted March 28, 2010 I've bound freelook controls to my X-52 hat switch. Upon entering an aircraft I will toggle freelook on and then just use the hat switch to move my view around. I've then also bound the big button on top of the throttle as "Re-Center" view so that I can quickly snap back to original position when needed.
cri74 10 Posted March 28, 2010 @jpinard - I use that for flying choppers that have windows down to my feet.. like littlebird or blackhawk helicopters. Just go to your numpad whilst pilot and press arrow down on your mupad (key 2) to move your default view once seated in your chopper. As for the camera mounted on the front of the aircraft was just a idea from what you wrote and how i imagined it practically... no cockpit - instrumets on left corner. dr_zakharotta 10 Posted May 27, 2010 Fly upside down.. that way you can see whats under the hood, only you are shielded by the canopy glass..

BigWolf 0 Posted May 30, 2010 Personally, I use my Saitek to fly and do things with Fast Movers, while using the mouse to look around With helos, I do use mouse and keyboard for them (also found it easier for some reason), then pressing ALT if I need to look round with my mouse I also have my Saitek's D-Pad for looking around as well, but the snap looks rather than free looking
Pain0815 10 Posted May 30, 2010 2x alt toggles freelook on mouse, so you can fly with you keyboard and look around with your mouse all the time. You dont need your mouse to control anything, just look around

The only downside I see to it is a possible lack of situational awareness and peripheral vision due to the view mode.
